To set up OpenMod permissions on an Unturned server, install the OpenMod.Unturned module in the server’s Modules directory, start the server once so OpenMod can download its core components, install the plugins you intend to manage, and then configure roles in openmod.roles.yaml. You can also create roles and assign permissions with OpenMod’s om command families. Edits to the roles file take effect immediately; you do not need to reload it.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Unturned servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The important detail is that OpenMod checks complete permission nodes, not just the first part of a command name. A grant for TeleportPlugin:teleport, for example, does not automatically grant TeleportPlugin:teleport.bring. Use help <command> to discover the exact node generated by a command, then grant that node or a deliberate wildcard.

What OpenMod permissions control
OpenMod describes its permission feature as “a simple role-based permission system.” Roles collect permission nodes, can inherit from parent roles, and can carry a display name, priority, data, and an isAutoAssigned setting. This lets you maintain a small number of reusable access profiles instead of adding every command separately to every player.
A permission node follows the form PluginId:Permission. For instance, a plugin might expose Kr4ken.NewEssentials:commands.home. RocketMod permissions managed through OpenMod use the RocketMod: prefix. The plugin portion and the permission portion must match the node exposed by the plugin; similar-looking text is not enough.

OpenMod evaluates permissions from roles and from direct user grants. A direct player permission overrides a conflicting role permission, which is useful for a one-player exception but can make later troubleshooting harder if you forget that the direct grant exists.
Install OpenMod.Unturned
1. Download the module
Download the current OpenMod.Unturned module archive from OpenMod’s official installation page. Use the Unturned module rather than a module intended for another game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Place the module in Modules
- Stop the server if it is running.
- Extract the archive.
- Copy the extracted
OpenMod.Unturnedfolder directly into theModulesfolder inside the Unturned installation directory.
The resulting layout must have the module folder immediately under Modules. Do not leave an extra archive folder in between, such as ModulesOpenMod.UnturnedOpenMod.Unturned.... If the folder is not directly under Modules, the server will not load the module.
3. Start the server and allow first-run downloads
Start Unturned. The first startup can take longer than later starts because OpenMod downloads its core components. Wait for startup to finish before deciding that the installation failed. Once the server is running, install the OpenMod plugins whose commands or features you want to control.
4. Confirm the OpenMod files were created
After the first successful startup, locate the OpenMod directory and look for openmod.roles.yaml. This file is the main place to define or edit roles. If it is missing, first recheck that the OpenMod.Unturned folder is directly under the server’s Modules directory and review the startup output for loading errors.

Build roles in openmod.roles.yaml
Minimal role structure
A role entry has an identifier, parent list, permission list, display name, and optional metadata. The following example creates a default role and a moderator role that inherits it:
roles:
- id: default
parents: []
permissions:
- OpenMod.Core:help
displayName: Default
data: {}
isAutoAssigned: true
- id: moderator
parents:
- default
permissions:
- OpenMod.Core:commands.help
displayName: Moderator
priority: 1
data: {}
The identifiers are the values you use in role commands. displayName is the human-readable label. parents lists roles whose permissions the role inherits. permissions contains the nodes granted directly by that role. data is available for role metadata, and priority can be set when you need to represent an ordering between roles.
Automatic assignment is only for new users
Set isAutoAssigned: true on a role when it should be assigned automatically to new users. This setting does not retroactively add the role to players who already exist. If an existing player needs the role, add it explicitly with om r add player.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchKeep inheritance narrow
Use a parent for permissions that genuinely belong to every child role. For example, put basic help access in default and let moderator inherit it. Avoid creating long chains of parents for one-off grants: every inherited node becomes part of the effective permission set and can make a denial difficult to locate.
When access is not what you expect, inspect the complete chain of parent roles, each role’s permissions, role priorities, explicit negations, and any direct permissions on the player. A direct player permission takes precedence over a conflicting role permission.

Assign and remove roles with commands
Add a role to a player
Use:
om r add player <player> <role>
Replace <player> with the player identifier accepted by your server and <role> with the role ID from the YAML file. For example, if the role ID is moderator, the command ends with moderator, not the display name unless they happen to be identical.
Remove a role
Use:
om r remove player <player> <role>
Removing a role removes the permissions supplied by that membership, but the player may still receive the same node from another role or from a direct permission. If the command still works after removal, inspect those other sources.
Add a direct permission
Use:
om p add player <player> <permission>
A direct grant is appropriate for a temporary exception or a single capability that does not justify a new role. Because direct permissions override conflicting role permissions, record why you added one and remove it when the exception ends.
Remove a direct permission
Use:
om p remove <player> <permission>
After removing the direct grant, the player’s effective access may change to the value supplied by their roles. If the permission remains available, check inherited roles and wildcard grants.
Discover the exact permission for a command
OpenMod can generate command permission nodes from the command registration. To identify the node for a command, run:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
help <command>
Use the permission shown for that command in the role or direct-player grant. This is safer than guessing from the command name because a plugin may use a different permission suffix or a nested command path.

Why a parent command grant may fail
OpenMod treats child commands as separate permission nodes. Granting TeleportPlugin:teleport does not automatically grant TeleportPlugin:teleport.bring or another child node. If a player can run the parent command but receives a permission error for a child, run help for the child and grant its exact node.
Use wildcards deliberately
A wildcard ending in .* covers matching child permissions. For example:
TeleportPlugin:teleport.*
This grants the matching child permissions under teleport. A plugin-wide wildcard such as:
TeleportPlugin:*
grants all permissions from that plugin. The broader wildcard is convenient for a trusted administrative role but may expose commands you did not intend to delegate. Prefer the narrowest node that satisfies the role’s job.
Explicitly deny an inherited permission
Prefix a permission with ! to forcefully remove an inherited capability:
!Kr4ken.NewEssentials:kits.vip
This is useful when a child role should inherit most of a parent role but must not receive one specific permission. Place the negation in the child role’s permission list and then test the command as a player who has only that role chain. If a direct player grant supplies the same permission, remember that direct user permissions override conflicting role permissions.

OpenMod and RocketMod together
OpenMod can run alongside RocketMod, but the two systems do not have to share permission decisions. RocketMod must be installed as a separate module for the integration setting to apply. Configure the mode in openmod.unturned.yaml under rocketmodIntegration.permissionSystem.

Separate |
The systems remain unsynchronized. | You deliberately want independent permission sets and understand that a grant in one system will not appear in the other. |
Choose the mode based on which system should own the decision. A synchronization mismatch can look like a missing permission: a plugin may be checking RocketMod while you are editing OpenMod roles, or the reverse. After changing the mode, test a command supplied by each relevant plugin rather than assuming all checks use the same backend.
RocketMod permission nodes in OpenMod
When RocketMod permissions are managed through OpenMod, use the RocketMod: prefix in the node. Do not omit that prefix when copying a RocketMod permission into an OpenMod role.
Troubleshoot “I lack permission” errors
The module does not load
- Confirm the extracted
OpenMod.Unturnedfolder is directly inside the UnturnedModulesdirectory. - Start the server again and allow extra time on the first startup for OpenMod’s core-component downloads.
- Verify that you installed the Unturned module and that the server is loading the same Unturned installation directory you edited.
The role exists but the player has no access
- Check the role ID in
openmod.roles.yamland compare it with the value used inom r add player <player> <role>. - Remember that
isAutoAssignedapplies to new users only; add the role manually for an existing player. - Inspect parent roles and confirm that the permission is actually listed in the effective inheritance chain.
- Look for an explicit
!negation that removes the node from a child role. - Check whether a direct player permission is overriding the role result.
The parent command works but a child command does not
Run help <command> for the failing child command and grant the exact generated node. A parent node does not automatically include child nodes. If several children are intentionally part of the role, use a scoped wildcard such as TeleportPlugin:teleport.* rather than granting the entire plugin with TeleportPlugin:*.
A RocketMod plugin still rejects the player
- Open
openmod.unturned.yamland inspectrocketmodIntegration.permissionSystem. - Confirm whether you selected
RocketMod,OpenMod, orSeparateintentionally. - Ensure RocketMod is installed as a separate module; otherwise these integration settings do not apply.
- If the mode is
Separate, grant the permission in the system that the plugin actually checks.
The node looks correct but is never accepted
A plugin must register its custom permissions before they are checked. OpenMod’s developer documentation describes permission-check results as Default, Grant, or Deny. If the spelling and prefix are correct but the plugin never registered the node, changing the role may not resolve the error; inspect the plugin’s registration and startup behavior.
A safe setup sequence for a live server
- Install
OpenMod.Unturneddirectly underModulesand complete one startup. - Install the plugins whose commands you need to govern.
- Back up
openmod.roles.yaml. - Create a minimal
defaultrole and mark itisAutoAssigned: trueonly if new users should receive it. - Create specialized roles with only the permissions each job requires.
- Use
help <command>to collect exact nodes, including child-command nodes. - Assign a role with
om r add player <player> <role>and test with a real player account. - Add direct permissions only for documented exceptions.
- If a capability must be excluded from an inherited role, add an explicit
!negation and test again. - If RocketMod is installed, set and verify the integration mode before diagnosing individual plugin permissions.
This sequence keeps the permission source visible: common access comes from roles, exceptions are identifiable as direct grants, and command failures can be traced to the exact node rather than to a guessed parent permission.
