For direct combat, build a repaired, layered mix of padding, mail, and plate that covers vulnerable slots; for stealth, favor dark, quiet clothing; and for dialogue or trading, wear clean, high-Charisma clothes. Late in the game, strong individual Kuttenberg pieces are a better target than a matching set.
How to choose armor in KCD2
Start with the job you need the outfit to do, then compare the relevant pieces in your inventory. Armor affects more than protection: the inventory shows stab, slash, and blunt defense, while weight, Charisma, noise, visibility, and condition also matter. A piece with impressive protection can still be a poor choice if it leaves other body areas exposed or makes your character too noisy for the task.

- Combat: Cover multiple slots and compare all three defense types rather than judging a loadout by its torso armor alone.
- Stealth: Reduce noise and visibility with dark, soft clothing; avoid mail when quiet movement matters.
- Dialogue and trading: Wear clean clothing with high Charisma rather than muddy combat armor.
- Any role: Keep gear in good condition and consider its weight before a difficult fight or long journey.
Layering makes a mixed loadout possible: padding can sit beneath mail, plate can go over those layers, and an outer coat or waffenrock can cover them. Think about coverage across the body—head, hands, arms, torso, legs, and feet—instead of searching for one named set to solve every problem. The KCD2.org armor guide recommends choosing gear by progression and purpose; the INARA item database lists armor values, but notes that its displayed values represent best-quality versions. Quality and condition can therefore make a displayed number a poor guide to the piece you actually own.
Best armor for direct combat
For a straightforward combat build, layer sound padding, mail, and plate where available, then add suitable head, hand, arm, leg, and footwear protection. This spreads protection across more than one slot and makes the loadout less dependent on a single high-stat piece. Check stab, slash, and blunt values separately, since the inventory presents them as distinct defenses.

Early on, prioritize affordable coverage over an expensive, complete-looking outfit. The July 17, 2026 KCD2.org guide recommends a repaired gambeson or pourpoint, mail when available, a solid helmet, and affordable plate. If you have access to The Lion’s Crest, it describes Brunswick’s armor as a strong Trosky-region treasure-hunt reward. These are guide recommendations, not an official best-in-slot ranking.
Late-game mixed armor
In the late game, combine strong pieces that suit your slots and needs instead of insisting on a matching set. Dot Esports’ February 12, 2025 armor guide gives these as examples of high-tier pieces: Milanese Cuirass, Noble’s Bascinet and plate legs, Hauberk Long, and Nuremberg Gauntlets. It also says Nuremberg Gauntlets and Noble plate legs can be obtained through the Mouth of Hell side quest, and that winning the Ars Dimactoria dueling tournament rewards the full Nobleman armor set. Treat these as secondary-guide acquisition notes; your access depends on quest state and the guide does not establish an official ranking of pieces.

A matching set is not mechanically required for a bonus: The Escapist’s guide to armor sets says equipping a certain number of pieces from one set grants no set bonus. Choose each item for its protection, condition, load, and suitability to the situation.
Best armor for stealth
For stealth, wear dark, soft clothing and keep noisy layers such as mail to a minimum. The point is not to maximize armor values but to lower noise and visibility; a heavily armored combat outfit is the wrong tool when staying unnoticed matters. The current KCD2.org guide recommends quiet dark clothing for this role, while Dot Esports’ 2025 guide identifies thief attire as an early stealth option.

Best clothes for dialogue and trading
Change into clean clothing with high Charisma for conversations and trading. Combat gear may protect you, but muddy plate is not the same as a socially effective outfit. Keep a separate set for social situations so the trade-off between protection and appearance is easy to manage.

At the start, focus on serviceable, repaired pieces that cover important slots without consuming all your Groschen. The early-game combination suggested by KCD2.org is a gambeson or pourpoint, mail if available, a solid helmet, and affordable plate. Brunswick’s armor is another option if you can access The Lion’s Crest.
Dot Esports’ February 12, 2025 guide also points to bandit fights along routes near Troskowitz as a source of pieces, guard armor as regional equipment that can be stolen, and Templar armor through the Hermit quest after Radovan’s questline. These are dated secondary-guide notes, so check that the relevant quest and equipment are available in your current game version and quest state before relying on a specific route.
A Warhorse armor Twitch-drop sequence described in a February 6, 2025 official Steam community post was time-limited and required account linking. That announcement is historical information, not evidence that the drop is still available. The post attributes this line to PLAION_CM: “Fine armour is earned, not given.”
