What counts as an Assetto Corsa server plugin?
A server plugin adds or automates a function around a dedicated Assetto Corsa server: timing, drift scoring, moderation, Discord logging, weather control, race events or custom administration. The three options covered here do not use the same installation model.

- Managed packages: a control panel installs and updates the plugin files for you.
- Self-hosted server extensions: you edit configuration and maintain files on the machine running the server.
- Script and executable hooks: a server manager loads Lua scripts or external programs to implement your own behavior.
That distinction matters when a server restarts, when a plugin needs a particular client version, and when something fails after an update. There is no published independent performance or adoption benchmark for these choices, so “best” here means the best fit for a stated job.

1. Assetto Servers Plugin Manager: the managed choice
The Assetto Servers guide dated August 18, 2026 says its Plugin Manager displays “both first-party managed packages and plugins included with AssettoServer.” This is the most convenient route when you prefer a panel to manual file deployment and configuration.

Packages available in the manager
- ServerHub Connection: links the server to the provider’s management environment.
- Leaderboard Timing: supports Assetto Corsa leaderboard timing workflows.
- Leaderboard Drift: provides a drift-leaderboard workflow.
- Auto Moderation: automates moderation actions defined by the package.
- Discord Audit: records server activity for Discord-oriented auditing.
- Live Weather: supplies a live-weather feature through the managed package.
- Race Challenge: adds race-challenge functionality.
The list identifies the packages available in the manager; it does not establish a performance ranking between them or guarantee that every package exposes identical settings. Read the package’s current panel description before enabling it.
What managed installation changes operationally
Managed installation requires an activated Discord Bot Plan, according to the August 18, 2026 guide. That requirement is separate from the gameplay function of timing, weather or moderation: a server can need the plan for installation even when the desired feature is not itself a Discord feature.

Managed installation workflow
- Confirm that your ServerHub account has the required activated Discord Bot Plan.
- Open the server’s Plugin Manager and review whether the entry is a first-party managed package or a package included with AssettoServer.
- Install one package only. Record its name, version shown by the panel and any settings you changed.
- Apply the configuration and wait for the panel-initiated restart to complete.
- Read the server log for plugin-load errors, then join with a test account and exercise the feature.
- Only after the test succeeds should you enable another package or change another setting.
This one-change approach makes a failed restart attributable. Installing several packages together makes it harder to identify whether a missing dependency, a conflicting configuration or a client mismatch caused the problem.
When this option is the practical winner
Choose the managed manager when your priorities are quick deployment, web-based administration and ready-made timing, drift or Discord workflows. It is especially suitable for a community without a developer on call. Choose a self-hosted option instead when you need source-level control, custom logic or an installation that cannot depend on a provider panel.
2. AssettoServer: control, authentication and weather
AssettoServer is a dedicated-server implementation rather than merely a single-purpose plugin. Its documentation describes Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic weather and an experimental plugin interface for adding server functionality. Built-in features are controlled through extra_cfg.yml.

Steam authentication and client gates
AssettoServer’s Steam-authentication flow uses the Steam Auth API to prevent SteamID spoofing. The session-ticket flow requires Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer on connecting clients.
These are minimum versions, not recommendations to update blindly. Verify the installed versions on a test client, then verify that a normal join still succeeds after enabling authentication. Drivers on older versions may fail to connect even when the server itself starts normally.
Dynamic weather requirements
Dynamic-weather features use CSP WeatherFX v1 and require CSP 0.1.76 or newer. A server can therefore pass the Steam-authentication minimum while still failing the weather requirement: 0.1.75+ is sufficient for the documented Steam-auth flow, but weather needs 0.1.76+.

The documentation names these three plugins; it does not provide a comparative accuracy, latency or resource benchmark. Live data also introduces an external-service dependency, while random and voting modes avoid that particular dependency but produce different race experiences.

- Security control: Steam authentication is designed to prevent SteamID spoofing.
- Traffic and simulation features: AI traffic is documented as a built-in capability.
- Weather choice: live, random and voting plugins cover three distinct operating models.
- Development path: the experimental plugin interface allows functionality beyond the built-in settings.
“Experimental” is an important qualification. Treat the interface as something that may require operator testing and maintenance rather than as a guaranteed stable compatibility layer.
Self-hosted AssettoServer deployment pattern
- Install the documented AssettoServer build on the machine that will run the dedicated server.
- Back up the existing configuration before editing
extra_cfg.yml. - Decide whether you need Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic weather or a custom plugin; do not enable all new features at once.
- For Steam authentication, verify every target client meets CSP 0.1.75+ and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573+.
- For dynamic weather, verify CSP 0.1.76+ and WeatherFX v1 compatibility.
- Install the selected weather or other plugin according to its package instructions, then restart the server.
- Inspect logs, connect with a current test client and check the intended behavior in a short private session.
- Record the working configuration so you can restore it after an update.
3. Assetto Server Manager: executable plugins and Lua automation
Assetto Server Manager is the strongest fit when your league already uses that manager and the required behavior is custom rather than one of the packaged features above. Its documented extension points are external executable plugins and Lua scripts.

External executable plugins
The example configuration documents external executable plugins and plugin chaining. An executable plugin can therefore live as a separate process or program rather than being compiled into the manager itself, while chaining allows one plugin’s output or event flow to lead into another. The exact executable interface and arguments belong to the manager’s current configuration documentation; do not assume that a plugin written for another server framework can be copied over unchanged.
Lua is a premium feature
The Lua guide explicitly states: “Lua plugins are a premium Server Manager feature!” Lua scripts run through hooks, are enabled with lua: enabled: true in config.yml, and are loaded from the server-manager/plugins folder.

- Make a backup of
config.ymland the existingserver-manager/pluginsdirectory. - Confirm that your Server Manager license or plan includes the premium Lua feature.
- Set
lua: enabled: trueinconfig.yml, preserving the file’s indentation and surrounding settings. - Place the Lua script in
server-manager/plugins. - Restart the manager and inspect the startup log for script-load errors.
- Trigger the hook in a private session, verify the result, and then add any executable plugin or chain one additional component.
Lua is the better route when the rule can be expressed as event-driven script logic. External executables are more appropriate when you already have a separate service, need another programming language or want to isolate a larger process. The documentation does not state a universal performance advantage for either method.
When Server Manager is the better choice
Use this route for league-specific automation: custom event handling, administration rules or integrations that are not represented by the managed package list. It carries more operator responsibility than a panel-managed package because you own the files, configuration, restarts and compatibility testing.
Client-side CSP apps are not server plugins
CSP documentation describes Python-app and Lua-app APIs, including track-condition controls and mirror functions. Those are client-side app APIs. They can be relevant when a server feature expects drivers to have a matching CSP installation, but they do not replace a server plugin and do not run the authoritative server logic.
Use this distinction when troubleshooting:
- If the server log cannot load a package, investigate the server installation and configuration.
- If the server starts but a driver sees no client-side display or weather effect, check CSP, Content Manager and the client app installation.
- If a feature requires WeatherFX or another CSP capability, publish the minimum client version before opening the server to the public.
Choose by the job you need done
Timing leaderboards
Start with the managed Leaderboard Timing package if you want a ready-made, panel-installed workflow. Select AssettoServer or Server Manager only when you need to build a custom timing pipeline around your own server logic; the supplied documentation does not establish a packaged equivalent in those systems.

Drift leaderboards
The managed Leaderboard Drift package is the directly documented choice for drift rankings. Confirm how scores are stored, displayed and reset in the current panel before migrating an established leaderboard.
Moderation and Discord auditing
Auto Moderation and Discord Audit are listed in the managed Plugin Manager, making that route appropriate when moderation and audit records are central requirements. If you need a rule unique to your league, Server Manager’s Lua or executable hooks provide the documented customization path.
Live or changing weather
Use LiveWeatherPlugin for real-time OpenWeatherMap data, RandomWeatherPlugin for automated variation without player choice, or VotingWeatherPlugin when drivers should select conditions. Check CSP 0.1.76+ and WeatherFX v1 before advertising dynamic weather.

Race challenges
The managed Race Challenge package is the documented ready-made option. Custom challenge logic belongs in Server Manager scripts or an AssettoServer plugin, but those approaches require you to implement and maintain the behavior.
AI traffic
AssettoServer is the option in this comparison whose documentation explicitly lists AI traffic as a server capability. The managed package list and Server Manager extension notes do not establish equivalent built-in AI traffic support.

Troubleshooting common failures
The server starts, but nobody can join after Steam authentication is enabled
Check the client gates first: CSP must be 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager must be 0.8.2297.38573 or newer. Test with a known-current client before changing server settings. If only older clients fail, the version requirement is the likely cause.

Weather loads but does not change
Verify CSP 0.1.76+, WeatherFX v1 and the selected weather plugin. Then check whether you chose live, random or voting behavior: a voting plugin may wait for a vote, while a live plugin depends on current external weather data.

A managed plugin appears installed but its feature is absent
Confirm that the panel completed its restart, read the startup log and test the feature in a fresh join. Recheck whether the package is enabled and whether the required Discord Bot Plan is active.
A Lua script does nothing
Confirm the premium feature is available, that lua: enabled: true is in config.yml, and that the script is in server-manager/plugins. Restart and inspect the log for syntax or load errors before testing the hook.
Two extensions conflict
Disable the newest change, restore the last known-good configuration and restart. Re-enable extensions one at a time. With Server Manager, inspect plugin chaining order; with AssettoServer, treat the experimental interface as a compatibility variable and test after each update.
Maintenance practices that prevent avoidable downtime
- Keep a dated backup of
extra_cfg.yml,config.ymland plugin directories. - Maintain a small test server or private session for client-version and plugin checks.
- Write down the minimum CSP and Content Manager versions in the server’s join instructions.
- Apply updates during a planned restart window.
- Read logs after every plugin or configuration change.
- Keep a rollback copy so a failed extension can be removed without reconstructing settings.
- Review external dependencies, such as live-weather data, when diagnosing intermittent behavior.
Verdict
For most communities seeking ready-made timing, drift, moderation, Discord auditing, weather or race challenges, Assetto Servers’ Plugin Manager is the simplest starting point, provided the Discord Bot Plan requirement and restart behavior fit your operation. AssettoServer is the stronger choice when you want self-hosting, Steam-authentication controls, AI traffic and several weather models, and you can maintain client-version compatibility. Assetto Server Manager is the specialist choice for leagues that already use it and need Lua or executable automation beyond packaged features. Whichever route you choose, treat compatibility checks, backups, logs and one-change-at-a-time testing as part of the plugin installation—not as optional cleanup.
