There is no universal music-volume percentage that works across every game. To hear a score clearly, match the game’s output mode to your speakers or headphones, set a comfortable overall volume, and adjust music, dialogue and effects independently while playing a representative scene. The right balance depends on whether you want the score forward, dialogue easy to follow, or gameplay cues prominent.
How do I make game music easier to hear?
- Match the output mode to your setup. Choose a headphone or stereo-speaker mode for those devices; use 5.1 or 7.1 only if your connected system supports it. Some games offer distinct choices: EA’s PC guide for Jedi: Fallen Order lists Headphones, Stereo Speakers, 5.1 Surround and 7.1 Surround, with Stereo Speakers as that game’s default. EA’s PC settings guide describes those title-specific options.
- Set the global volume to a comfortable level. Do this before balancing individual channels. Keep loud passages comfortable rather than turning every sound up to overcome a mix that feels unbalanced.
- Adjust music against the other channels. In a scene with music, dialogue and action, raise music if effects bury the score; lower it if speech or important gameplay cues disappear beneath it. Then adjust dialogue or voice and effects separately. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 explains that competing music and speech can cause players to miss information and recommends independent volume controls for audio categories. God of War Ragnarök and Halo Infinite also document separate music, dialogue or voice, and effects settings.
- Listen for more than one kind of scene. Check a quiet musical passage, an action-heavy moment and dialogue if the game has it. Change one control at a time so you can tell what improved the mix, and keep the balance that serves your listening goal across scenes.
What audio settings make game dialogue clearer?
First lower music if it is masking speech, then raise dialogue or voice independently if the game offers that control. Keep effects at a level that preserves useful gameplay cues without overwhelming conversation. Microsoft’s accessibility guideline recommends that audio categories—including music, voice-over, effects, narration and voice chat—be adjustable separately.

Some games also provide speech-focused processing. The PlayStation accessibility page for God of War Ragnarök documents voice boost and center-panned dialogue, alongside music, dialogue, effects and global sliders with a 0-to-10 range in that game. Center-panning changes spatial placement by removing panning or surround information. PlayStation cautions that voice boost may affect music and effects clarity while characters speak, so compare it in a scene where those sounds matter.

Activision’s 2020 PlayStation guide for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War lists separate music, sound effects, dialogue and cinematics controls, and describes Vocal Clarity as a game-specific preset for players still having trouble hearing dialogue after adjusting sliders. Menu names and behavior vary by game and platform.

Should I use night mode or compressed dynamic range?
Use a narrower dynamic range when you want quiet sounds to be easier to hear without raising the overall volume enough to make loud passages uncomfortable. These options change the difference between quiet and loud sounds; they do not simply make music louder. The exact labels and processing are game-specific.
| Option | What it does in the documented game | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed | Halo Infinite describes Compressed as mixing sounds more evenly so they can be heard at low volumes; Dynamic preserves the contrast, with loud sounds loud and quiet sounds quiet. Halo Infinite’s audio guide. | Try it for low-volume listening if quieter music or speech is difficult to hear. |
| Low/Night | Rocket League says this makes loud sounds quieter and quiet sounds louder. Epic Games Support’s audio settings article. | Try it for quieter play when a game’s loud and soft sounds feel too far apart. |
| Medium | Rocket League names Medium as its default and describes it as a good choice for most players and for headphones. The article notes that the game’s current mix dates back to its 2019 HDR audio patch. | A reasonable starting point in Rocket League if you do not yet have a preference. |
| High/Theater | Rocket League intends this option for players who prefer high volume or use higher-quality systems. | Consider it only if that description fits your listening setup and comfortable volume. |
Do not assume that “Night,” “Compressed” or “Theater” works the same way in another title. Read the in-game description and compare modes at a comfortable level.

Which audio output setting should I use for headphones?
Select Headphones when the game offers it and you are using headphones. If it offers only stereo, choose the stereo option for a two-channel setup. Reserve surround or multichannel output for a playback system that supports it; a multichannel selection is not automatically better for headphones. For example, EA documents separate Headphones, Stereo Speakers, 5.1 Surround and 7.1 Surround choices for the PC version of Jedi: Fallen Order, but those labels and defaults are not universal.
Can accessibility settings help you hear music or speech?
Accessibility features can improve audibility, but a feature that helps speech may change how music, effects or spatial cues sound.

- Voice boost or center-panned dialogue: Try these when speech is hard to follow, then check whether music and effects remain clear. Center-panning can reduce directional or surround information.
- Mono audio: If one stereo channel is difficult to hear, mono conversion sends audio to both channels. Microsoft describes this option in Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105; PlayStation also documents automatic mono-audio integration for God of War Ragnarök.
- Captions or subtitles: Use them as a parallel way to follow dialogue when audio balance or speech clarity is not enough.
Why there is no single best music slider percentage
Games use different slider ranges, defaults and audio processing. EA’s Jedi: Fallen Order PC guide, for example, lists music, effects and dialogue sliders from 0 to 100, while PlayStation documents 0-to-10 global and channel sliders for God of War Ragnarök. Those are examples of each game’s controls, not a transferable ideal mix.
Choose settings according to your goal, listening level, room, playback device and accessibility needs. If music is the priority, raise it relative to competing channels; if conversation or gameplay information is more important, give those channels room. Recheck the balance in different scenes because a setting that reveals a quiet score can overpower speech or effects elsewhere.
