Choose by the pirate adventure you want: Sea of Thieves emphasizes shared-world sailing, discovery, and crew stories; Skull and Bones puts ship combat and ship builds at the center; Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is a Caribbean pirate action-adventure set in 1715; and Sid Meier’s Pirates! offers a classic mix of pirate activities. Those are differences in each publisher’s stated design emphasis—not a tested ranking of which game is best.
Which pirate game should you play?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared-world sailing, discovery, and unscripted crew adventures | Sea of Thieves | Rare describes its Adventure mode as a shared pirate world for roaming, discovering, fighting, and looting. The game also features ship-to-ship combat, quests, and player-created stories. | Its framing puts multiplayer and social play at the center. Check current platform and cross-play requirements for your setup. |
| Linked story quests within a shared adventure | Sea of Thieves | Rare describes Tall Tales as linked cinematic narratives. Its A Pirate’s Life campaign brings together the worlds of Sea of Thieves and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. | It is not presented as a wholly linear, single-player campaign; the shared-world adventure remains part of the game’s identity. |
| Ship combat and choosing how to build a vessel | Skull and Bones | Ubisoft frames it as an open-world naval action RPG in which ship combat and build choice shape the captain’s journey, with PvE and PvEvP play. | That description tells you what the game emphasizes, not how its combat compares in quality with other games. |
| A Caribbean pirate action-adventure with a historical setting | Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag | Ubisoft describes a pirate action-adventure beginning in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic in the Caribbean. | The official overview establishes the setting and broad genre; it does not provide enough detail to compare specific story systems or current editions. |
| A classic mix of treasure hunts, missions, and varied pirate activities | Sid Meier’s Pirates! | Take-Two’s Wii announcement lists treasure maps, missions, sword fighting, ship combat, and dancing; the official manual documents additional systems. | The announcement is specifically for the Wii edition and does not establish current platform availability. |
How the games differ by play style
Naval combat and ship choice
If your main attraction is fighting from a ship and tailoring your vessel, Skull and Bones is the clearest match in the publishers’ descriptions: Ubisoft specifically highlights naval combat and ship-build choice. Sea of Thieves also includes ship-to-ship combat, but places it alongside quests, exploration, looting, and crew-created stories. These descriptions identify emphasis, not comparative combat quality.

Exploration and setting
Sea of Thieves is presented as a shared world for roaming and discovery. Skull and Bones is set in an open sea and framed around a pirate captain’s journey. Black Flag gives its pirate adventure a specific historical and geographic anchor: the Caribbean in 1715. Pick based on whether you want a shared world to roam, a ship-centered open-world RPG, or a pirate action-adventure with a defined historical setting.
Story structure
For explicitly linked story quests, Rare describes Sea of Thieves’ Tall Tales as cinematic narratives. Its A Pirate’s Life campaign is described in the official FAQ as “an original story campaign that sees the worlds of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and Sea of Thieves colliding in epic fashion.” The same game also supports player-created stories, so a story-focused session need not mean the whole experience is a linear campaign. Ubisoft’s short Black Flag overview establishes an action-adventure set in the Caribbean in 1715, but does not support a detailed comparison of its story systems here.
