There is no single best axe for every Elden Ring build. This guide covers the 13 base-game axes and excludes DLC weapons; it compares what each weapon is for rather than claiming an unsupported universal power ranking. Choose by your build, requirements, weapon skill or special effect, and how practical the weapon is to obtain.
The scope matters: Eldenpedia’s current Axes class reference lists 17 entries, including four DLC additions: Messmer Soldier’s Axe, Smithscript Axe, Forked-Tongue Hatchet, and Death Knight’s Twin Axes (Eldenpedia’s Axes reference). The recommendations below are for PvE build planning; they are not a measured PvP tier list.

How to choose an Elden Ring axe
Axes do not share one damage identity. Some suit physical-stat investment, while others offer magic damage, lightning damage, frost buildup, or Arcane scaling. The right choice is the one that works with your stats and the way you want to fight—not necessarily the weapon with the largest number on a menu.
- Build compatibility: Match the weapon’s scaling and damage type to attributes you already plan to raise.
- Requirements: Check minimum attributes before spending upgrade materials or reallocating stats.
- Skill and special utility: Consider the weapon skill and any distinct effect, such as frost buildup.
- Acquisition: A strong option is only useful once you can obtain it; account for when and how you can access it.
- Play mode: These are PvE-oriented selection notes, not claims about PvP performance.
The available comparisons do not establish a measured performance ranking for all 13 base-game weapons. Treat the following as a build-based shortlist, not a tested first-to-last tier list.

Build-specific axe recommendations
For a magic-damage option: Rosus’ Axe
Rosus’ Axe is a candidate to investigate if your build is interested in magic damage. It represents a different direction from a straightforward physical weapon, so weigh its attribute requirements and scaling against your planned stats before choosing it. The available evidence does not establish that it outperforms other axes.
For frost buildup: Icerind Hatchet
Icerind Hatchet is the frost-oriented example among the documented choices. That status effect may make it a better fit for a player specifically building around frost than an axe chosen only for its damage type. Check its current requirements and acquisition details in-game before committing.

For Arcane scaling: Ripple Blade
Ripple Blade is an Arcane-scaling option. It is therefore worth considering when Arcane is a central stat in your build; it is not a default recommendation for characters investing elsewhere. Confirm how its scaling works with your intended setup and upgrades.

For lightning damage: distinguish base game from DLC
Death Knight’s Twin Axes are an example of a lightning-damage axe in the current class reference, but they are DLC content and are not part of this 13-weapon base-game scope. They should not be used to answer which base-game axe to choose.

What a full 13-weapon ranking can—and cannot—establish
A strict ordinal list would imply that every base-game axe has been compared on consistent terms. The evidence available here does not establish a complete, verified set of requirements, locations, upgrade paths, skills, or comparative performance for all 13. It would be misleading to invent a first-through-thirteenth ranking or fill in those details from memory.
For a particular candidate, verify its item description, requirements, skill, and scaling in your game or a current item reference. Then compare it with your build’s attributes and the alternatives you can actually obtain. That process is more reliable than treating a generic “best axe” label as a universal verdict.

Patch and platform context
Bandai Namco’s official version 1.16.1 notes are dated August 21, 2025, and list PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, and Steam as target platforms. The notes include this general weapon bug fix: “Fixed a bug where the wrong affinity or status ailments could be applied to some weapons when performing specific actions.” They do not report an axe-specific balance change, so the note should not be read as evidence that one axe became stronger or weaker.
