NBA 2K26: the successor for NBA simulation
If “after NBA 2K25” means the next annual entry, NBA 2K26 is the direct route. 2K lists its release date as September 5, 2025, and schedules online services through December 31, 2027. Its listed offline options include Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA, and The W. 2K’s service-status page provides the current schedule.
Check the platform generation before choosing an edition
Features are not identical across generations. 2K says ProPLAY, The City, The W, and MyNBA are available only in the Gen 9 version. Check the product listing carefully rather than assuming a copy for one console generation includes the same modes as another. 2K’s NBA 2K26 page also notes that online and bonus features may require an internet connection, account registration, or a paid console subscription; optional in-game purchases and paid random items are noted as well.

NBA The Run: quick 3v3 arcade tournaments
NBA The Run is the clearest alternative if you want to spend less time in a full simulation and more time in short, competitive games. NBA.com describes a four-round knockout tournament with randomized rules. It lists a June 9, 2026 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, and reports cross-play. NBA.com’s announcement also reports 32 NBA players and 11 courts at launch; those are product details reported by the league, not a measure of game quality.
This is a current-generation console and PC option, not a listed release for older consoles. If you want local couch multiplayer or a conventional 5-on-5 season, the cited announcement does not establish those as the game’s focus; check the current listing for supported modes before purchase.

Basketball Classics: retro 5-on-5 with local multiplayer
Basketball Classics takes the opposite approach from a detailed NBA simulation: simplified three-button controls and a retro presentation, with play calling, roster editing, and story progression that unlocks content. Xbox Wire reports the Xbox version includes local multiplayer. Its article describes a roster of more than 175 teams and 1,000 players, figures reported by the platform publication rather than independent counts. Xbox Wire’s announcement identifies the game as a project from two-person studio Namo Gamo, published by Acclaim.

NBA 2K Playgrounds 2: keep the online sunset in mind
NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is an older, exaggerated 2v2 arcade game featuring current and retired NBA players. 2K lists Exhibition, Exhibition 3 pt Contest, NBA Season, and Court Editor as offline modes. Its status page scheduled online features to remain available only through August 20, 2026. That date has passed, so do not buy it expecting online features to work; the official listing does not establish that every platform or storefront still sells it. 2K’s Playgrounds 2 status page lists the service schedule and offline modes.
NBA LIVE and NBA STREET: possible legacy finds
EA’s catalog includes NBA LIVE 19, NBA LIVE Mobile, NBA LIVE 18, older NBA LIVE games, and NBA STREET entries. EA describes NBA LIVE 18 as combining player creation, NBA career play, and streetball courts. EA’s sports catalog is useful for identifying these series, but it does not confirm that any particular older game remains purchasable or has working online services. Treat them as titles to check in your platform’s store, not guaranteed current recommendations.

What happens to NBA 2K25?
If you already own NBA 2K25, its scheduled service dates matter when deciding whether to keep playing or move on. 2K says purchase availability ends October 30, 2026, the game is discontinued December 31, 2026, and online modes end January 1, 2027. Owners can still redownload it and play offline modes. These are 2K’s stated dates and availability terms, not a prediction about regional storefront listings. 2K’s NBA 2K25 status page has the service details.
How to choose
- Choose NBA 2K26 for the annual simulation format, but verify generation-specific modes and any online requirements for the features you want.
- Choose NBA The Run for 3v3 arcade tournaments and reported cross-play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam PC.
- Choose Basketball Classics for retro 5-on-5, simplified controls, and confirmed local multiplayer on Xbox.
- Choose NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 only if offline play suits you; its listed online service end date was August 20, 2026.
- Investigate older EA titles selectively; catalog presence alone does not confirm sale or functioning online play.
Do not assume a game supports your preferred console generation or multiplayer setup from its name alone. Compare the exact store listing for your platform, and check service status when online play is important.
