The best BeamNG.drive controller setup is a calibration process, not a universal number preset: install the current wheel drivers and firmware, select the highest steering angle your wheel supports, set the same angle in BeamNG.drive, map each pedal according to its axis layout, and tune force feedback while driving a representative car. BeamNG states that “Every driving style favours different force feedback settings,” so the values that feel right depend on your wheel, pedals, frame rate and driving style. Start with the official Steering Wheel: Setup procedure, then use the troubleshooting branches below when a control is missing, delayed or behaving incorrectly.
This guide covers PC wheels, direct-drive bases, USB pedal sets and Xbox controllers. It explains what to change, what not to combine, and how to verify each result before moving to the next adjustment.

What “best settings” actually means in BeamNG.drive
BeamNG.drive does not publish one steering angle, force-feedback strength or smoothing value that is optimal for every device. A small belt-driven wheel, a direct-drive base, a wheel with combined pedals and a wheel with independent USB pedals present different signals to the game. BeamNG’s own guidance therefore treats the numbers as starting points and asks you to tune them during a normal drive rather than while the car is stationary.
The dependable target is a one-to-one steering response with clean pedal axes, force feedback that is strong enough to communicate grip without clipping or rattling, and a stable frame rate. If a setting produces a strange result, return to the last known-good step instead of changing several controls at once.

Prepare the wheel and pedals before opening BeamNG
Install current drivers and firmware
Use the wheel manufacturer’s configuration software to install the current PC driver and firmware for the base, wheel rim and pedals. Reconnect the hardware after an update and confirm that the manufacturer utility can see every axis. Vendor filter names and their effects differ, so do not copy a value from another wheel unless that device’s documentation uses the same control.
Choose the highest available steering angle
In the manufacturer utility, set the wheel to its highest available steering angle. Then enter the identical angle in BeamNG.drive’s steering binding. This matching pair is more important than any supposedly “fast” angle preset: if the two values disagree, the virtual wheel can reach full lock before the physical wheel, or require more rotation than the physical hardware can provide.
BeamNG’s setup page deliberately does not prescribe one degree value for all wheels. A wheel that offers a 900-degree range and a base limited to a smaller range cannot use the same physical setting, so treat the maximum angle reported by your own hardware as the reference.
Verify PC and DirectInput mode
Force feedback requires a PC-compatible device with suitable DirectInput support. Some hardware calls this mode PC, Windows or DInput. A console-compatibility mode may expose buttons and axes but still prevent the game from receiving force feedback correctly. The official Controller support page lists tested categories and devices, including Fanatec CSL DD and GT DD Pro bases, Fanatec pedal products and Moza bases and pedals. That list is a compatibility reference, not a ranking or a guarantee that every firmware revision behaves identically.
Decide whether your pedals are separate or combined
Open the manufacturer utility or its Windows test panel and move the throttle and brake independently. If each pedal has its own axis, plan to bind two separate controls. If the hardware exposes one combined throttle/brake axis, plan to use BeamNG’s combined binding only. Mixing both layouts is a common cause of reversed, stuck or apparently digital pedals.

Separate pedal axes
For independent throttle and brake signals, bind the throttle axis under the throttle section and the brake axis under the brake section. Each pedal should move its own input bar from rest to full travel. Do not add a combined throttle-and-brake binding as a second option; the duplicate signals can fight each other.
Combined throttle/brake axis
When the device reports one combined axis, bind BeamNG’s combined “throttle and brake” control. Remove bindings listed under the separate throttle and brake sections. Leaving the old separate entries in place can make one pedal cancel the other or leave the vehicle applying input after you release it.
| Hardware signal | BeamNG binding to use | Bindings to remove | Expected hardware-screen behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent throttle and brake axes | Separate throttle and separate brake bindings | Any combined throttle-and-brake entry | Each pedal moves a different bar |
| One combined throttle/brake axis | Combined “throttle and brake” binding | Separate throttle and brake entries | One bar changes as the shared axis moves |
Start over if a binding has become confusing
If earlier edits produced unpredictable steering or force feedback, delete the steering binding and recreate it before diagnosing the wheel. This removes stale binding parameters and gives you a clean baseline. Make one change at a time and test it in the same vehicle so you can identify which adjustment mattered.
Calibrate force feedback while driving
Do not judge force feedback with the car parked. Static tires can generate oscillation and rattling that do not represent the forces you feel while cornering. BeamNG recommends a controlled baseline using an official rear-wheel-drive vehicle, no mods and no custom setup. The K-series Kc6 is one suitable example.

Use a stable baseline
- Load an official rear-wheel-drive vehicle such as the K-series Kc6.
- Disable mods and return the vehicle to its default setup.
- Make sure the wheel is in PC/DirectInput mode and that the steering binding shows movement.
- Drive a route containing straight-line braking, ordinary corners and a few changes of surface or grip.
- Keep the game at a responsive frame rate. BeamNG says, “We recommend at least 60fps”; higher frame rates generally make force feedback feel more immediate.
Set overall strength first
Temporarily choose a high Smoothing value so you can evaluate the overall force without harsh high-frequency chatter. Drive at normal speed and adjust Strength until the wheel communicates cornering load and tire grip comfortably. The correct point is the one you can hold consistently without fighting the wheel or losing detail; it is not a number that can be transferred reliably between wheels.
Lower smoothing for detail
After strength feels comfortable, lower Smoothing gradually. Less smoothing normally restores more texture and quicker changes in load. Stop lowering it when the wheel develops an uncomfortable rattle, buzz or vibration, then raise smoothing slightly until the unwanted behavior disappears while steering detail remains clear.
Reduce low-speed oscillation
Enable Reduce strength at low speeds. This reduces the tendency of a wheel to oscillate when the vehicle is stopped or moving very slowly, without requiring you to weaken the entire force-feedback signal for normal driving.
Limit crash peaks with the wheel software
If impacts produce force that is too violent, BeamNG suggests lowering the wheel’s torque limit in the manufacturer configuration tool and increasing the in-game strength to compensate. This keeps ordinary driving forces usable while reducing the maximum peak torque delivered during a crash. Recheck the in-game behavior after changing the manufacturer setting, because the two controls interact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUnderstand what the force-feedback controls cannot fix
Strength and Smoothing cannot repair a wrong steering axis, a mismatched rotation angle, a combined pedal mapped as two axes or a frame rate that is too low. Correct the signal and performance problems first; otherwise you may mistake an input error for a force-feedback tuning problem.

Enable Xbox controller vibration
Wheel force feedback and gamepad vibration use different controls. BeamNG.drive v0.36’s release notes instruct Xbox-controller users to select the controller’s Steering binding, scroll to Force Feedback Configuration, and check both Enabled and Use gamepad vibration. The notes describe approximately 100 as a starting Strength value that can then be adjusted. Because this instruction is tied to v0.36, verify the labels in your current build if a later update has reorganized the Controls screen. See the v0.36 release notes for the version-specific wording.

The device is missing from Controls > Hardware
Steam Input can intercept or remap a wheel before BeamNG sees it. Open BeamNG.drive’s Steam properties, find the per-game Controller/Steam Input setting and disable Steam Input, then restart the game and reconnect the wheel. BeamNG documents this case in Steering Wheel: Common Problems & Solutions. If you use a Logitech G29, the same support guidance points you to the Logitech Gaming Software when the device is not being exposed correctly.

Detection does not create controls automatically for every device. Some wheels have no BeamNG preset, so add manual bindings under Options > Controls > Bindings > Vehicle. Watch the Hardware page while turning the wheel or pressing a pedal: if the input bar does not move there, the problem is outside the vehicle binding and should be addressed in the driver or hardware utility first.
Pedals act like buttons
Check that the wheel or pedal set is in its PC mode rather than a console-compatibility mode. Close software that intercepts, filters or remaps joystick signals, then confirm that the axis moves continuously in the hardware test. Finally, remove conflicting combined or separate bindings according to the pedal layout table above.
Steering feels delayed
First verify continuous steering input on the Hardware page. Select the steering binding and set its filter to direct. Then improve frame rate; BeamNG recommends at least 60 fps for responsive force feedback. Fullscreen mode can remove a couple of frames of input lag, while borderless mode does not necessarily provide the same benefit. Turning VSync off may reduce latency further, but it can introduce visible screen tearing, so choose based on which trade-off you prefer.

Direct-drive force feedback is absent or only works briefly
Reconfigure and enable force feedback, then change the force-feedback Update Type from Fast (default) to Full and test again. Confirm that the manufacturer utility reports PC/DirectInput mode and that the current driver and firmware are installed. If the wheel still disappears, return to the device-specific instructions rather than applying an old workaround written for a previous game or driver version.
The wheel shakes while parked
Some oscillation at a standstill is not a useful measure of driving quality. Enable Reduce strength at low speeds, test while moving in the official rear-wheel-drive baseline vehicle, and increase Smoothing slightly if the wheel still rattles. Do not compensate by lowering strength repeatedly if normal cornering already feels weak.
How to evaluate a wheel or pedal set before buying
You do not need new hardware to configure BeamNG.drive. If you are shopping for an upgrade, use compatibility and signal quality as the decision criteria rather than a claimed “best” preset.
| Criterion | What to verify | Why it matters in BeamNG |
|---|---|---|
| PC/DirectInput support | The manufacturer explicitly supports PC, Windows or DInput operation and force feedback | Without the correct mode, the game may detect buttons but not receive force feedback |
| Steering-angle range | The highest angle available in the manufacturer utility | BeamNG should use the same angle for one-to-one steering |
| Pedal axis layout | Separate throttle and brake axes, or one combined axis | Determines whether you need individual bindings or the combined control |
| Driver and firmware support | Current downloads and a configuration utility that identifies the device | Required for reliable detection, calibration and mode selection |
| BeamNG reference listing | Whether the official controller-support page lists the device or product family | Provides a compatibility reference, but is not a performance ranking |
The reviewed BeamNG pages do not establish a best-value product, a universal force-feedback number or a measured ranking between wheel bases. Choose the hardware that exposes the axis layout and PC mode you need, then perform the calibration sequence above.
Keep the setup reliable after updates
Controller behavior can change when BeamNG, Steam, a wheel driver or firmware is updated. The official steering-wheel setup page was last modified January 14, 2026, and the common-problems page January 23, 2025. Menu labels, tested-device lists and compatibility behavior may change after a major game release.
- After an update, confirm the wheel is still in PC/DirectInput mode.
- Check the Hardware page before recreating every binding.
- Verify that the manufacturer’s steering angle still matches BeamNG’s value.
- Retest separate versus combined pedal mapping if a pedal suddenly behaves as a button.
- Use the current common-problems guide for vendor-specific cases instead of copying legacy fixes.
A concise decision path when something feels wrong
If steering is geometrically wrong, fix the manufacturer and in-game rotation-angle match. If the Hardware page shows no movement, fix the driver, mode, Steam Input or connection. If the Hardware page moves but the car does not, recreate the Vehicle binding. If pedals conflict, use either separate axes or the combined axis, never both. If the car responds but the wheel feels harsh, set comfortable Strength first and then adjust Smoothing. If everything feels delayed, use the direct filter and address frame rate before changing force-feedback values.
These checks follow BeamNG’s official setup and support guidance at Steering Wheel: Setup, the Controller support reference and the BeamNG.drive FAQ. They produce a repeatable baseline without pretending that one numerical preset can suit every wheel, pedal set or driving style.
