DayZ launch parameters are command-line switches passed to DayZServer_x64.exe. They select the server configuration and mission, set the listening port and profile directories, enable logs and freeze protection, load client or server-only mods, and optionally tune CPU, FPS, BattlEye, file-patching, and storage paths. A practical Windows baseline is:

Launch parameters configure the dedicated-server process before it starts loading the mission. The -config switch selects the server configuration file; the file normally contains identity, gameplay, security, persistence, and mission settings. Other switches control process-level behavior such as ports, profile and log locations, mod loading, BattlEye files, diagnostics, CPU use, frame-rate limits, and storage.
This division matters because a setting belongs in one of two places. Put server rules and gameplay values in serverDZ.cfg. Put executable, path, logging, mod, and process-tuning choices on the command line. If a mod’s documentation expects -mod= or -serverMod=, adding that mod list to serverDZ.cfg will not load it.

A dependable Windows starting command
Use this as a readable baseline for a vanilla server:

Parameter names are commonly shown with mixed capitalization in documentation, but use one consistent spelling in your script. Keep each switch separated by a space. A value follows an equals sign, while a flag such as -dologs has no value.

How to build the command step by step
- Choose the executable working directory. Place
DayZServer_x64.exe,serverDZ.cfg, mission files, and mod directories where your service account can read them. If the launcher starts in another directory, use absolute paths. - Select the configuration file. Add
-config=serverDZ.cfg, or provide the complete path, for example-config=C:DayZserverDZ.cfg. Confirm the file exists and is readable. - Assign a port. Start with
-port=2302. Open and forward the required game and adjacent ports according to your network or host’s rules. For a second instance, choose a separate port and separate writable directories. - Create a profile directory. Add
-profiles=profilesand create that folder before launch if your wrapper does not create it. Verify that the account running the service can write there. - Enable useful diagnostics. Add
-dologs -adminlog -netlog. These switches make startup and connection failures easier to trace in the RPT and related logs. - Add freeze protection. Add
-freezecheckfor an unattended process. A freeze over five minutes triggers a stop and dump rather than leaving a visibly running but unusable instance. - Define the mission only when needed. Add
-mission=<path>when your deployment requires an explicit mission path. Otherwise keep the command simpler and let the normal mission configuration apply. - Add mods after the vanilla command works. Test the server once without mods, then introduce client-visible and server-only content in separate switches so a failing mod is identifiable.
- Apply optional tuning last. Add
-cpuCount=<n>,-limitFPS=<n>,-storage=<path>,-BEpath=<path>, or-filePatchingonly after the base process starts correctly.
Client-visible mods versus server-only mods
-mod: content clients must load
Use -mod= for modifications whose files and definitions are needed by connecting players. Separate multiple paths with semicolons:
-mod=@ModA;@ModBClients generally need the same content and compatible versions. A server can start while a player is missing a required client mod, but that player will not be able to join successfully or will encounter content and signature errors.

-serverMod: logic kept on the server
Use -serverMod= for server-side-only modifications that are not broadcast to clients:
-serverMod=@ServerLogicServer-only placement is appropriate for administrative or backend logic. Do not put a mod in this list merely to hide a client dependency; if players need its assets or scripts, it belongs in -mod=.

Mod order can affect whether dependencies resolve. Put a shared library before the content mod that depends on it:
-mod=@Framework;@Map;@Weapons -serverMod=@AdminToolsKeep the semicolon separators inside each switch and use spaces between switches. When troubleshooting, add one mod at a time, preserve the documented dependency order, and inspect the RPT for the first load error rather than the final cascade of missing classes.

Configuration-file boundary
serverDZ.cfg is where server identity, gameplay, security, persistence, and mission settings belong. The command line is where you select that file and define process behavior: ports, profile and storage paths, logging, BattlEye location, mods, CPU count, FPS cap, and related diagnostics.
The server’s displayed name is determined by the configuration file selected through the -config command-line option. If the name, password, time acceleration, persistence, or other gameplay value appears unchanged, first verify that the command points to the file you edited. A correctly edited file has no effect if the process is loading another file with the same name from a different working directory.
Operational layouts and trade-offs
Vanilla versus modded
A vanilla command minimizes variables: use -config, -port, -profiles, and the logging and freeze flags. A modded command adds -mod and, when needed, -serverMod. Modded deployments require version control, client distribution, dependency ordering, and more disk space for logs and content.
Local machine versus managed host
On a local machine you control the working directory, firewall, port forwarding, service account, updates, and backups. On a managed host, the panel may already reserve the executable path, assign a port, create profile directories, or provide a separate field for each parameter. Do not duplicate a panel-generated switch in a custom command until you know which value wins. Confirm that the provider supports the DayZ executable, custom mods, BattlEye, persistent profile files, and the ports your instance needs.

Observability versus disk usage
-dologs, -adminlog, and -netlog improve visibility into startup, administration, and network behavior. They also create more output. Keep the profile directory on persistent storage, monitor its size, and archive or rotate files through your operating-system or hosting controls rather than deleting active logs while the server is running.
Performance tuning
-cpuCount controls how many logical cores parallel task processing may use and must not exceed available cores. -limitFPS caps server FPS, with a documented current maximum of 200, and can reduce CPU consumption. These switches do not replace adequate hardware, correct mission settings, or diagnosis of a mod that causes excessive work.
Storage and BattlEye paths
Use -storage when persistent data should be rooted on a custom volume or separated between instances. Use -BEpath when BattlEye files need a custom location. Keep both paths writable and included in your backup plan; moving only the executable while leaving profiles or storage behind can make a new instance appear to have lost its identity or persistence.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts with old or unexpected settings
- Check the exact
-configpath and the process working directory. - Confirm the edited file is the one the command selects, not a duplicate in another folder.
- Read the startup RPT in the
-profilesdirectory for path and parse errors.
Players cannot connect
- Verify the selected
-portmatches the firewall, router, and host-panel allocation. - Check that adjacent ports required by the server are permitted by the network policy.
- For a modded server, compare the client’s required
-modcontent and versions with the server’s list. - Use
-netlogto gather network-event details while reproducing the failure.
A mod is missing or loads in the wrong place
- Put client-required content in
-mod, not-serverMod. - Put server-only logic in
-serverModso it is not treated as client content. - Separate paths with semicolons, separate switches with spaces, and place dependencies before dependent mods.
- Check the RPT for the first missing dependency, invalid path, or signature error.
Logs or crash dumps cannot be found
- Open the directory named by
-profiles; logs are not necessarily beside the executable. - Ensure the service account has write permission.
- If you use
-storageor-BEpath, check those custom roots as well as the profile directory.
The process consumes too much CPU or appears frozen
- Confirm
-cpuCountdoes not exceed the cores actually assigned to the process. - Consider a deliberate
-limitFPScap; the documented maximum is 200. - Leave
-freezecheckenabled for unattended operation. A freeze beyond five minutes should produce a dump that can be examined after restart. - Temporarily remove recently added mods and optional switches to isolate the trigger.
Validation checklist before going live
- The executable launches from the intended working directory.
-configpoints to the exact file whose settings you intend to use.- The chosen port and required adjacent ports are allowed through every firewall or host layer.
- The profile, storage, and BattlEye paths exist, persist across reboots, and are writable.
- Logging flags are enabled at the level needed for operations.
- Client-visible and server-only mods are in the correct switches and ordered by dependency.
- Any CPU count is no greater than the available logical cores, and any FPS cap is intentional.
- A clean restart has been tested, and the resulting RPT, admin, network, and crash files can be located.

Minimal vanilla instance
