There is no single best centre-back for every FC 25 Career Mode save: the right signing depends on whether you need an immediate starter, a development project, a particular defensive profile, and a fee your club can afford. For a low-cost prospect, consider Jorthy Mokio or Finn Jeltsch; for a stronger young starter, look at Dean Huijsen or Giorgio Scalvini; Pau Cubarsí is the standout high-budget option in Squawka’s men’s Career Mode shortlist. The ratings, potentials, attributes and values below are FC 25 guide or database figures—not guarantees of performance or accepted transfer bids.

How to choose a centre-back in FC 25 Career Mode

Separate a player’s starting overall from his potential. Overall is the more useful quick indicator of likely immediate contribution; potential is a development ceiling, not a promise that a player will reach it. A prospect with a large gap between the two can require patience and regular development, while a higher-rated player may help sooner but cost more.

Squawka’s men’s Career Mode guide reports player values and attributes, but those figures do not establish what your club will have to pay. The guide warns that values, release clauses and availability can vary by save and transfer strictness. Treat its prices as estimates, then check the player’s status and your own finances in the save.

EA’s Career Mode help guide describes Manager Career as a mode for managing a club’s squad, tactics, transfers, finances and player development. EA also advises downloading squad updates for the latest transfers and ratings. The recommendations here remain specific to FC 25; an updated squad can change the context in your game.

Best low-cost centre-back prospects

Squawka’s FC 25 men’s Career Mode list reports the following initial overalls, potentials and values. Values are guide estimates, not guaranteed transfer fees.

Player Initial overall Potential Reported value Best fit
Andrea Natali 58 83 £525,000 Long-term project at very low reported value
Jorthy Mokio 65 86 £1.8m Low-cost prospect with pace
Finn Jeltsch 70 85 £2.9m More developed option on a limited budget

Figures and profiles in this table are from Squawka’s FC 25 centre-back signing guide.

Andrea Natali: biggest development bet

Natali has the largest potential-overall gap among these three, but his reported 58 starting overall is also the lowest. Squawka lists 58 pace and 56 defensive awareness, so he is not the pick for a club that needs a ready-made first-team defender. Consider him when you can invest in development and do not need him to carry the back line immediately.

Jorthy Mokio: pace at a low reported value

Mokio is listed at 65 overall and 86 potential. Squawka reports 73 pace, 65 defensive awareness, 71 standing tackle and 72 strength, making him a more mobile prospect than Natali in the cited profile. The guide says Ajax may accept around £1.5m with a sell-on, despite listing his value at £1.8m; this is a save-sensitive estimate, not a universal asking price.

Finn Jeltsch: the more developed budget choice

At a reported 70 overall and 85 potential, Jeltsch starts from a stronger position than Natali or Mokio in this group. Squawka lists 72 physical, 71 defending, 75 jumping and 75 strength. He is the clearest option here if a limited budget still needs to buy a prospect closer to contributing, though his actual availability and fee depend on the save.

Mid-budget options: choose the profile you need

Player Initial overall Potential Reported value Profile
El Chadaille Bitshiabu 73 85 £6m Exceptional reported strength, limited pace
Joel Ordóñez 74 85 £7.5m Mid-budget option; cited guide passage provides fewer attribute details
Valentín Gómez 75 84 £10m More ready-made and pace-oriented

Ratings, potentials, values and available profile details are reported by Squawka; the values are estimates rather than guaranteed bids.

El Chadaille Bitshiabu: strength with a speed trade-off

Squawka reports 91 strength, but only 57 pace and 35 acceleration. That combination can suit a team prioritising physical presence, but it is a clear compromise if your defensive line needs to recover quickly. Weigh the profile against your tactics rather than treating the strength figure as a complete measure of defensive quality.

Joel Ordóñez: a shortlist option with less cited detail

Ordóñez is listed at 74 overall, 85 potential and £7.5m value. The cited guide passage offers less attribute detail for him than for the other profiles here, so the available figures do not support a precise recommendation based on pace, strength or passing. Check his in-save attributes and role fit before making him a priority.

Valentín Gómez: the pace-oriented choice

Gómez is listed at 75 overall and 84 potential. Squawka reports 80 pace, 73 defending, 76 physical and 73 short passing. Among the mid-budget profiles with detailed attributes in the guide, he is a sensible candidate when recovery pace matters and you want a more developed starting point than the lower-cost prospects.

Higher-budget young starters

Player Initial overall Potential Reported value Key cited strengths and trade-offs
Giorgio Scalvini 78 88 £24.5m 80 defending, 82 standing tackle, 81 interceptions and 6’4" height; 57 passing
Dean Huijsen 78 87 £24m 79 defending, 84 jumping and 75 short passing; 68 stamina
Pau Cubarsí 81 89 £42m 83 defending, 85 jumping, 83 short passing and 84 long passing

These are Squawka’s FC 25 guide figures, not guaranteed transfer costs or results from hands-on gameplay. A player’s suitability can also change with tactics and save settings.

Giorgio Scalvini: height and defensive numbers

Scalvini is reported at 78 overall and 88 potential. The guide lists 80 defending, 82 standing tackle and 81 interceptions, alongside a height of 6’4". Its reported 57 passing is a notable weakness if you expect your centre-backs to start attacks with accurate distribution.

Dean Huijsen: a young starter with a stamina caveat

Huijsen is listed at 78 overall and 87 potential, with 79 defending, 84 jumping and 75 short passing. Squawka also notes 68 stamina, so consider how often your system asks him to press, cover wide areas or play through congested fixtures. The guide’s career-start context refers to his earlier Bournemouth setting; check the club and availability in your own FC 25 save.

Best Value

Pau Cubarsí: strongest cited combination of starting rating and ceiling

Among the listed prospects, Cubarsí has both the highest reported starting overall (81) and potential (89), as well as strong cited passing figures: 83 short passing and 84 long passing. His reported value is £42m, placing him in the expensive tier. Squawka estimates Barcelona could require around £55m with a sell-on; treat that as a save-dependent guide estimate, not a fixed price.

Established high-rated defenders

If you need a top-rated defender rather than a prospect to develop, FIFA Index’s FC 25 Career Mode defender ranking lists these men’s players among its high-rated entries:

Player Overall Potential
Virgil van Dijk 90 90
Alessandro Bastoni 87 89
William Saliba 87 89
Gabriel 87 88

These are database ratings from FIFA Index’s 17 July 2025 snapshot, not a ranking of affordability or transfer feasibility. The ranking page includes women’s and men’s football; the names above are the men’s examples relevant to this shortlist. A high overall does not show whether a player will be available or affordable in your save.

Quick picks by squad need

  • Lowest reported cost for a long-term project: Natali, if his 58 starting overall is acceptable for your squad.
  • Budget prospect with pace: Mokio, whose cited profile includes 73 pace.
  • More developed low-cost option: Jeltsch, listed at 70 overall.
  • Physical presence: Bitshiabu, if you can accommodate his cited 57 pace and 35 acceleration.
  • Recovery pace in the mid-budget group: Gómez, listed with 80 pace.
  • Height and defensive attributes: Scalvini, with cited 6’4" height and strong defending, tackling and interception figures.
  • Passing from the back: Cubarsí or Huijsen, based on the guide’s cited short- and long-passing profile for Cubarsí and short-passing figure for Huijsen.
  • Highest-rated established choice in the cited FC 25 database snapshot: Van Dijk, at 90 overall and 90 potential.

Check the player in your save before bidding

  1. Confirm your database: In the game, download the latest squad update using EA’s Career Mode guidance at EA Help. The guide figures in this article describe FC 25 and may not match every squad setup.
  2. Check availability and your finances: Look at the player’s club, transfer status and your budget in your save. Guide values and example bids do not guarantee a deal; transfer strictness and save circumstances can affect availability.
  3. Compare the relevant attributes: Check the attributes that match your defensive plan—such as pace for a high line, strength and jumping for physical contests, or passing for build-up—rather than choosing on potential alone.
  4. Plan for development: If signing a low-overall prospect, decide whether he can earn minutes in your current squad or needs a development plan and a gradual route into the first team.

Squawka’s shortlist focuses on men’s Manager Career and first-window signings. Women’s Career Mode finances differ, so the reported values and affordability guidance should not be assumed to transfer directly to a women’s save.
