These are recommendations from 2025 guides, not a tested ranking. The listed ages, player counts, and play times are guide or publisher specifications; check the current edition’s box and retailer listing before buying.
How to choose a game for your family
- Check the age guidance and content. An age label is a starting point, not a guarantee that every theme suits every child. The Family Gamers separates games for teens and adults from games for the whole family, noting that some titles playable at 10+ still have more adult-oriented themes; its Back Stories examples include death and occasional foul language. Read the current edition’s description as well as its age label.
- Count the players. Match the listed player count to the people who will be at the table. A game for two to four may not work for a large gathering unless people are happy to split into groups or take turns.
- Be realistic about play time. A 30-minute game and a two-hour game serve different evenings. Durations below are those published in Asmodee Canada’s 2025 guide, not independent timing tests.
- Choose the kind of play. Competitive tile placement, cooperative teamwork, image-based storytelling, and resource strategy feel quite different. Pick the one the group is most likely to enjoy rather than relying on a broad “family game” label.
2025 family-game picks by play style
Asmodee Canada’s Emily Bradshaw framed its 2025 holiday list for both gifts and family game nights, with options for different ages and player types. Its published specifications below are useful for comparing fit, but editions and packaging can vary by market.
| Game | Guide-listed age | Players | Play time | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CATAN | 10+ | 3–4 | 60–120 minutes | Competitive resource trading and development for groups that want a longer strategic session. |
| Splendor | 10+ | 2–4 | 30–45 minutes | Resource collection and building a jewelry business, with a shorter strategic format than CATAN. |
| Dixit | 8+ | 3–8 | 30–45 minutes | Storytelling and image interpretation make it a candidate for larger groups that enjoy imaginative clues. |
| Azul | 8+ | 2–4 | 30–45 minutes | Competitive tile-laying built around visual patterns and tactical choices. |
| Chromino | 6+ | 1–8 | 30–45 minutes | Color matching with domino-like tiles; a flexible option for a broad group. |
| Carcassonne | 7+ | 2–5 | 45–60 minutes | Landscape tile placement and tactical scoring for players who like building a map as they go. |
| Ticket to Ride | 8+ | 2–5 | 45–60 minutes | Route collection and light strategy with a geography theme. |
| Monkey Palace | 10+ | 2–4 | 30–45 minutes | A LEGO building board game with competitive scoring for people who like construction and strategy. |

Cooperative choices for families who want to work together
Junior Minecraft Builders and Biomes
Ravensburger describes this as a cooperative game for up to four players: players work toward a farm-building objective while racing against zombies or creepers. The publisher positions it for six-year-olds and families with Minecraft fans. Confirm the current edition’s printed age label, since packaging may differ.

These descriptions come from Ravensburger’s age-organized family-game guide. Its broader approach is useful when matching complexity to children: younger players tend to need shorter, simpler rounds, while older children may be ready for more planning.

Match the gift to the gathering
- For a longer strategy night: CATAN’s listed 60–120 minutes and three-to-four-player range make it a better fit for a small group with time to settle in.
- For an imaginative larger group: Dixit is listed for three to eight players and centers on storytelling and interpreting images.
- For a younger or more flexible group: Chromino’s guide-listed age of six-plus and one-to-eight-player range may be useful, subject to the current edition’s label.
- For cooperation rather than competition: Consider Junior Minecraft Builders and Biomes or Chronicles of Light, checking the age label and session length for the intended players.
- For a quick, casual mixed-age gathering: Duck & Cover is The Tabletop Family’s pick; use that as one outlet’s judgment, then confirm the edition and suitability for your group.
