Start with Civilization VI’s automatically detected graphics settings, then change one control at a time on your own hardware. The game exposes resolution, window mode, GPU selection, performance impact, memory impact and advanced options, but its official documentation does not establish one universal preset or any setting-by-setting frame-rate gain. The practical goal is a stable, legible display for your computer, not a benchmark number that applies to everyone.
What “best settings” means in Civilization VI
There are two competing goals: keeping the game responsive enough to play comfortably and keeping map details, menus and text easy to read. Civilization VI can choose a starting configuration automatically, but that choice is only a starting point. Different graphics cards, integrated GPUs, displays, operating systems and launch APIs can produce different results.

The Civilization VI 25th Online Manual states: “The game will automatically select the best graphics options for you when you first start the game.” The same manual identifies the controls you can adjust: GPU selection when more than one GPU is present, resolution, window mode, a performance-impact slider, a memory-impact slider and advanced options. It does not publish comparative benchmarks, a recommended UI-scale value or a resolution that is optimal for every display.
Use the detected defaults first. If the game is slow, change one setting, replay the same type of turn or scene, and decide whether the result is better. If the interface is difficult to read, adjust the display arrangement that helps your eyes and monitor; do not assume that lowering resolution universally improves readability.

Use the detected defaults as your baseline
1. Let the first launch complete
On the first start, allow Civilization VI to apply its automatic graphics selection. Record the current resolution, window mode and any visible quality choices before experimenting. A baseline lets you tell whether a change actually helped instead of relying on memory.
2. Keep the comparison fair
When comparing two configurations, keep the platform, launch API, display and workload consistent. For example, compare the same operating system and DirectX choice while moving around the same late-game save or a similarly busy map area. Switching from one launch path to another at the same time as a graphics change makes the result impossible to attribute.
3. Change one control at a time
The official sources do not quantify the frame-rate or memory effect of individual options. Make a single adjustment, play long enough to notice stutter or delayed input, and then either keep it or return to the baseline. This method produces a result specific to your machine without pretending that an unverified preset is universal.
What each graphics control does for your decision
GPU selection
If your computer has more than one GPU, the manual allows you to select which one Civilization VI uses. Confirm that the game is attached to the GPU you intend to use, especially on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics. The manual identifies the control but does not promise a particular performance improvement from one GPU choice; verify the behavior on your system.
Resolution
Resolution determines the pixel grid used for the game image. A display’s native resolution usually gives the sharpest text, while a different resolution may be useful when your hardware cannot maintain acceptable responsiveness. The evidence does not support a universal “best” number or a claim that reducing resolution always makes the interface easier to read.

Choose a resolution that your monitor displays cleanly and that leaves map labels and interface text comfortable to read. If text becomes soft or cramped after a change, return to the clearer option rather than treating a lower number as an automatic fix.
Window mode
The manual lists window mode as a configurable option. Use the mode that behaves reliably with your desktop, display switching and other applications. When diagnosing a problem, change only window mode and repeat the same workload so you can separate a display-mode effect from a graphics-quality effect.
Performance impact
The performance-impact control is intended to trade visual workload against responsiveness. The manual does not document a fixed frame-rate gain for any position on the slider. Move it gradually when the default configuration is not responsive enough, and judge the result during the situations that matter to you, such as scrolling across a crowded map or ending a turn in a large late-game empire.
Memory impact
The memory-impact control is a separate axis from performance impact. If your system is constrained by available graphics or system memory, adjust this control and observe whether stutter or instability changes. Because the official guidance supplies no universal thresholds beyond the platform requirements, treat the result as hardware-specific rather than assigning a fixed slider position to every computer.
Advanced options
Advanced options provide additional controls beyond the broad impact sliders. The manual confirms that they are available but does not publish a benchmarked order for disabling them. If you need more responsiveness, alter one advanced option at a time, keep notes, and compare the same scene. If a visual element becomes harder to interpret, restore the previous value.

A repeatable tuning procedure
- Write down the baseline. Note the automatically selected GPU, resolution, window mode, performance-impact position, memory-impact position and any advanced values you can identify.
- Choose a repeatable workload. Use the same save, map area and camera behavior for each comparison. A quiet early game can hide problems that appear in a busy late game.
- Test responsiveness first. Scroll, zoom and issue several ordinary commands, then end a turn if that is part of your normal play. Look for delayed input, hitching or sudden pauses.
- Test readability separately. Read city names, resource labels, yields, tooltips and the main interface at your normal sitting distance. A configuration that feels fast but forces you to squint is not a successful readability setting.
- Change one setting. Adjust either resolution, window mode, an impact slider or one advanced option. Do not change several values together.
- Repeat the same workload. Compare the new behavior with the baseline under the same display and launch conditions.
- Keep or revert. Keep a change only when it improves your experience without creating a new readability, stability or compatibility problem.
- Record the final configuration. Save the values in a note so you can restore them after a driver, operating-system or game update.
Readability: make the map and interface work for your eyes
Protect sharp text before chasing speed
Readability is a display decision as much as a graphics-quality decision. Start by checking whether the selected resolution is clear on your monitor. If labels and menus look blurred, test the display’s native mode before reducing quality elsewhere. The official documentation does not define a universal interface scale, so judge legibility from your normal viewing distance.

Window mode can affect how the game fits your desktop and how easily you switch applications. Select the mode that keeps the game image stable and text readable on your setup. There is no official claim that one mode is always faster or clearer.
Check map information in a busy situation
Do not evaluate readability only on an empty grassland. Examine a developed city, a dense cluster of units, multiple resource icons and overlapping map labels. If a performance change removes visual information you rely on, restore the previous setting or try a smaller single adjustment.
Do not confuse a performance fix with a readability fix
Lowering resolution can reduce the workload on some systems, but it can also make text less sharp. Conversely, preserving a crisp resolution does not guarantee acceptable performance. Treat speed and legibility as separate tests and choose the compromise your display and hardware support.

These are compatibility requirements, not an FPS guarantee. Meeting the recommended figures does not establish a particular frame rate, turn time or readability outcome because the page does not provide measured performance results. Hardware and operating-system details can change, so check the current Civilization Support page when installing or troubleshooting.
Steam launch options: choose DirectX 11 or DirectX 12
Civilization Support says the 2K Launcher was removed for the Steam build. Steam now provides launch options for DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. This choice is part of compatibility troubleshooting and should be kept consistent when comparing graphics settings.
Selecting the API in Steam
- Open your Steam library and locate Civilization VI.
- Open the game’s Properties window.
- Find the launch-options or launch-selection control supplied by Steam for the installation.
- Select DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, then start the game from Steam.
- Test the same save and display conditions you used for your baseline.
The support guidance includes an important launch-path caveat: starting the game from a desktop shortcut opens the DirectX 12 version even if DirectX 11 was selected as the preferred Steam option. If your API selection appears to be ignored, launch from Steam itself and verify the shortcut you are using.
When to test the other API
If one API produces crashes, rendering problems or unreliable startup on your computer, test the other option while leaving graphics settings unchanged. The official guidance documents the two choices but does not declare one universally faster or more readable. Keep whichever option is stable and compatible with your system, then tune graphics settings separately.

Mac guidance is different
Aspyr’s Mac FAQ recommends using the default graphics settings designated at launch. It also warns that running below the minimum requirements can cause severe performance issues and crashes. Apply that advice independently of Windows instructions: do not assume that Windows requirements, DirectX choices or Windows-specific controls transfer to macOS.

If a Mac installation is unstable, first return to the launch-designated defaults and confirm that the computer meets the applicable minimum requirements. Only then test individual display or graphics changes, recording each change so you can restore the supported baseline.
SteamOS/Linux and cross-platform update caveats
Steam’s store listing publishes separate requirements for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. Use the requirement set for the platform on which you actually run the game rather than borrowing figures from another operating system.
The same listing notes that Mac and PC can be out of sync during updates or patches. A difference in behavior between platforms may therefore reflect a version or patch mismatch rather than a graphics setting. Confirm that both installations are on the expected update before comparing performance or readability.

The game is slow after first launch
- Return to the automatically selected baseline and confirm which GPU is selected when more than one is available.
- Change one performance-impact, memory-impact or advanced option at a time.
- Repeat the same map workload after each change; do not assume a slider position has a documented FPS value.
- Check that your platform meets the applicable requirements, remembering that requirements are not performance promises.
Text or map details are difficult to read
- Check whether the current resolution is sharp on your display.
- Test window mode without changing other graphics controls.
- Inspect a busy map with labels, yields and city information visible.
- Restore any setting that removes information you need; there is no official universal UI-scale or resolution recommendation.
The wrong DirectX version starts
- Open the game through Steam rather than a desktop shortcut.
- Verify the Steam launch selection for DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.
- Remember that Civilization Support says a desktop shortcut starts the DirectX 12 version even when DirectX 11 is selected in Steam.
The game crashes on a Mac
- Use the default graphics settings designated at launch, as advised by Aspyr.
- Confirm that the Mac meets the applicable minimum requirements.
- Do not transfer Windows-specific DirectX or requirements advice to macOS.
Two platforms behave differently after an update
- Check the platform-specific Steam requirements and update state.
- Account for the store listing’s warning that Mac and PC may be temporarily out of sync during patches.
- Compare settings only after the installations are on comparable versions.
How to compare your own configurations
Because the official sources do not provide a pair of validated presets, the most reliable comparison is personal and controlled. Keep the same monitor, resolution target, launch API, save file and camera actions. Record whether input feels delayed, whether scrolling hitches, whether turns complete acceptably and whether labels remain legible.
Use a simple decision rule: retain a change only when it solves the problem you were testing without creating a more important problem. For example, a performance-impact reduction that improves scrolling but makes resource icons too difficult to distinguish may not be worthwhile for a player who relies on those icons. There is no published statistic that can replace this hardware-and-display-specific judgment.
A practical starting profile
For a new installation, the defensible starting profile is the one Civilization VI selects automatically at launch. Keep the detected resolution and window mode if they are clear and stable. If performance is inadequate, adjust the performance-impact or memory-impact control, or one advanced option, then retest. If readability is inadequate, prioritize a display arrangement that keeps text and map labels sharp, testing resolution and window mode independently. On Steam, keep the chosen DirectX API fixed during these comparisons and launch from Steam when you need to honor the API selection.
This approach does not promise a universal frame rate. It gives you a documented baseline, a controlled way to tune it and a recovery path when a change makes the game less stable or less readable.
