If you want the tense teamwork of The Outlast Trials, start with GTFO for demanding tactical horror, Phasmophobia for ghost investigation, DEVOUR for a focused ritual challenge, or Lethal Company for chaotic scavenging and proximity-chat scares. For a slower survival world, consider Sons of the Forest. None is a one-to-one replacement: choose by the kind of cooperation your group enjoys, then confirm everyone’s platforms and crossplay needs before buying.
Which game should your group try first?
| Game | Best for | How cooperation works | Structure and difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTFO | Teams that want high-pressure tactical horror | Coordinate carefully to survive; communication is central | Demanding runs; less welcoming to casual groups |
| Phasmophobia | Investigation and supernatural mysteries | Gather evidence, divide roles, and communicate during hunts | Repeatable investigations built around identifying a ghost |
| DEVOUR | A direct shared objective and frantic rounds | Find ritual items and work together to banish possessed cultists | Online co-op for 1–4 players; also has single-player mode |
| Lethal Company | Unpredictable sessions with scares and laughs | Scavenge scrap together while danger and separation create pressure | Quota-driven scavenging; guides describe it as PC-focused |
| Sons of the Forest | Exploration and building in a survival setting | Explore and build together in a longer-form sandbox | Slower-building dread; the cited roundup does not establish a player limit |
| Resident Evil 5 | A structured campaign for two friends | Play a cinematic campaign with a dedicated partner | More action-oriented than the strongest horror picks |

Choose by the part of The Outlast Trials you enjoy
For careful coordination under pressure: GTFO
GTFO is the pick for a committed squad that enjoys planning, communicating, and learning from failed attempts. Its tension comes from the need to coordinate: mistakes can jeopardize a run. That makes it a strong fit for players who want demanding teamwork, but a risky first choice if your group prefers forgiving, casual sessions.

For investigation and voice communication: Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia turns cooperation into a shared supernatural investigation. Players gather evidence, divide tasks, and communicate as a team while trying to identify the ghost and respond to hunts. Choose it if your group would rather solve a mystery together than focus on a combat or escape challenge. The 2026 roundup reports four-player online play and crossplay across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; verify current compatibility against the listings for your region and devices.

For a focused ritual objective: DEVOUR
DEVOUR is officially described as a co-op horror survival game for 1–4 players. Its online team objective is to find ritual items and banish possessed cultists. The official site also states that it supports single-player mode and full VR without an additional purchase. That makes it a straightforward option when you want a shared goal rather than a long survival campaign.
For chaotic scavenging: Lethal Company
In Lethal Company, a crew scavenges for scrap on abandoned moons while danger and separation can leave teammates in trouble. Proximity chat helps make communication part of the tension, and the quota adds pressure to each outing. It suits groups that like unpredictable situations and comic mishaps alongside scares. The cited guides describe it as PC-focused; check the current store listing for supported player count and platform before organizing a group.

Sons of the Forest is a longer-form survival sandbox built around exploring and building together. The cited roundup lists PC online co-op but does not establish a player limit.

If you have one regular partner and want a cinematic campaign, Resident Evil 5 is worth considering. Its co-op is structured around a two-player story, with a stronger action emphasis than the investigation, stealth, or survival pressures that make the other picks feel more like horror alternatives.

- VHS: Very Horror Stories is a Horror Role Play Game inspired by ‘70’s, ‘80’s and ‘90’s classics such as Hellraiser, Nightmare, Alien, Halloween and many more, coming in three stand-alone boxed sets that allow you to play in a different subgenre of Horror each.
Check group size and platforms before buying
Before settling on a game, answer these questions as a group:
- How many people are playing? DEVOUR’s official site specifies one to four players. Do not assume another game supports your group size without checking its current listing.
- What devices does everyone use? Confirm the game is available on each player’s platform. A console version for one title does not imply console availability for another.
- Is crossplay essential? Verify that the exact platforms in your group can play together. Crossplay and cross-progression are different features; do not assume one from the other.
- What session shape do you want? Pick repeatable objectives for focused outings, or a campaign or survival world if your group wants a more sustained experience.
Voice communication is especially relevant to games built around coordination, investigation, or proximity chat. A microphone-equipped headset can make those conversations easier, but no premium equipment is necessary to choose or play these games.

How these games differ from The Outlast Trials
The Outlast Trials is the comparison point: its co-op trials put a group under pressure from enemies hunting them. The alternatives above distribute that pressure differently—through tactical coordination in GTFO, evidence gathering in Phasmophobia, a shared ritual in DEVOUR, or scavenging and separation in Lethal Company. Choose based on the teamwork loop you want, rather than expecting another game to reproduce the same trial structure.
