Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with the game’s published PC targets, then adjust one setting at a time and compare the result in the same scene. Steam lists Low at 720p and 30 FPS with DX11 for its minimum tier, and High at 1080p and 60 FPS with DX12 for its recommended tier; both targets specify ray tracing off. These are requirements-page targets, not guarantees or benchmark-tested stutter fixes.
Before changing settings, note your CPU, GPU and video memory, RAM, resolution, graphics preset and DirectX mode. Also identify the symptom: consistently low FPS, brief frame-time hitches, a crash, or online rubber-banding. Those are different problems and may need different troubleshooting.
What are the best PC settings for The Outlast Trials?
Use the Steam requirements as a reference point, not a promise that a system will achieve a particular result. The minimum and recommended tiers differ in hardware, resolution, frame-rate target and DirectX mode; matching one listed component does not mean a PC meets the entire tier.
| Steam tier | Processor | Memory | Graphics card | Target and graphics notes | Storage and internet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 | 8 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti 2 GB, AMD Radeon R7 360 2 GB, or Intel Arc A310 4 GB | Low, 720p at 30 FPS, DX11, ray tracing off | 40 GB available storage; broadband internet listed |
| Recommended | Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 1660 6 GB, AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 8 GB, or Intel Arc A580 8 GB | High, 1080p at 60 FPS, DX12, ray tracing off | 40 GB available storage; broadband internet listed |
These figures are Steam’s published requirements, accessed October 7, 2026. The frame-rate targets describe the listed tiers; they are not independent benchmark results. See The Outlast Trials on Steam.

If your PC is closer to the minimum tier
Begin with a lower resolution and quality level, and leave ray tracing off. That broadly follows Steam’s minimum target of Low at 720p and 30 FPS, but it is a reference baseline inferred from the listing—not a tested custom preset. If performance remains poor, change one graphics option at a time and compare in a repeatable scene.
If your PC meets or exceeds the recommended tier
Start at High and 1080p with ray tracing off, matching Steam’s recommended target. If you still see hitches, test individual settings rather than dropping every option at once. A setting can affect image quality and frame rate differently depending on whether the system is limited by its GPU, CPU or another factor.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
How do I stop stuttering in The Outlast Trials?
- Classify the problem. Note whether the game runs at low FPS throughout, pauses briefly in hitches, closes with a crash, or shows rubber-banding during online play. Do not assume network rubber-banding is a graphics stutter.
- Record a baseline. Write down your resolution, graphics preset, DirectX mode, ray-tracing state and the scene or activity where the problem occurs. Repeat the same section when comparing changes.
- Change one variable. Adjust one graphics setting, then replay the comparable scene and note whether the symptom changes. This makes it easier to identify which change helped or made performance worse.
- Compare DirectX modes if available. Steam lists DX11 for the minimum target and DX12 for the recommended target. That difference does not establish that DX11 is faster or more stable on your PC, so treat a mode change as a diagnostic comparison, not a universal fix.
- Check for a matching game-specific issue. If the symptom is a documented crash or a reproducible problem after a particular action, consult current patch notes and report persistent issues through the official support route.
Official materials do not establish a universally effective setting-by-setting stutter preset, resolution-scaling value, frame cap or driver configuration across current hardware. The steps above are cautious troubleshooting, not benchmark-tested performance claims.
Should I use DX11 or DX12?
Use the Steam tier that best matches your system as a starting point: its minimum target pairs DX11 with Low at 720p and 30 FPS, while its recommended target pairs DX12 with High at 1080p and 60 FPS. Both specify ray tracing off. Because the targets differ in more than DirectX mode, they do not show that one API is inherently better for every PC.

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
If you are troubleshooting and the game lets you choose the mode, compare DX11 and DX12 under otherwise similar settings and in the same scene. Keep the mode that works better on your system; do not interpret the published targets as proof that switching modes will fix stuttering.
When should I turn off ray tracing?
Red Barrels’ February 10, 2026 update documented a crash fix affecting some AMD graphics cards when ray tracing was activated. If you have an AMD card and the issue is a crash with ray tracing on, turning it off is a focused diagnostic. The note concerns that crash scenario; it does not establish that ray tracing causes all stuttering. The Steam minimum and recommended targets both list ray tracing off. See Red Barrels’ Advent of Bogomolova Update patch notes.

Which patch notes matter for game-specific problems?
Some fixes apply only to particular circumstances, so match the note to the symptom rather than treating every patch as a general performance fix.
- July 25, 2026: Red Barrels’ Project Boneyard hotfix addressed an out-of-memory issue that could occur after repeatedly opening and closing the loadout menu while in Invasion cameras. This is a specific context, not a general stuttering workaround. Read the Project Boneyard hotfix notes.
- September 17, 2026: Red Barrels’ Chemical Leak hotfix post announced fixes for reported bugs and crashes, but its announcement did not enumerate them. It does not establish a general stutter fix. Read the Chemical Leak hotfix notes.
