There is no single best Commander discipline in Civilization VII: choose the one that solves your army’s immediate problem. Bastion supports defense, Assault supports attacking, Logistics supports operations and army size, Maneuver supports movement, and Leadership improves the Commander’s own battlefield impact. Commendations are best treated as specialized upgrades, not a universal ranking; check their current in-game descriptions, since a complete authoritative list of standard Commendations and effects is not established here.
Choose a Commander discipline for the job
Commanders can pack nearby units and move them together. When deployed, that force can fight, besiege, or defend; promotions provide unit bonuses and other effects. The official Civilization VII developer overview describes five Army Commander disciplines by their broad purpose:

| Discipline | Best fit | What the official overview says |
|---|---|---|
| Bastion | Keeping an army healthy when it is attacked | Defensive bonuses. |
| Assault | Taking the initiative in combat | Offensive bonuses intended to give an edge when attacking. |
| Logistics | Operations that benefit from a larger army | Operation-focused bonuses, including increasing army size. |
| Maneuver | Repositioning or navigating the map more easily | Movement-focused bonuses. |
| Leadership | Strengthening the Commander’s own battlefield impact | Bonuses focused on the Commander unit itself. |
These are role descriptions, not a measured ranking of every promotion. In practice, start with the constraint that matters in the current campaign: survival under attack, offensive pressure, force capacity, map movement, or the Commander’s personal impact.

Commendations are specialized upgrades associated with Commander progression, but a complete, authoritative current catalog of standard Commendations and their exact effects is not established here. A community-maintained Commander reference reports that reaching a top-tier promotion in a tree grants a Commendation Point, with one point per tree. Treat that unlock detail as provisional and verify it in the current game before planning around it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rather than assuming one Commendation is best for every army, match the available upgrade to the role you have chosen and the circumstances in which that Commander will operate. Check the in-game text for the specific effect and requirements: the sources available do not support a reliable cross-tree ranking or a complete comparison of all standard effects.
When a unique Commander changes the choice
Some unique Commanders replace a standard discipline with a distinct tree. Trung Nhi, for example, replaces Leadership with a tree built around specific combat situations. Firaxis’ July 22, 2025 update notes give these effects:

| Trung Nhi ability | Effect listed in the July 22, 2025 notes |
|---|---|
| Jungle Warfare | +5 Combat Strength to units in Tropical tiles within the Command Radius. |
| Mettle and Courage | +5 to units within the Command Radius in friendly territory. |
| Lạc Rebellion | +2 to Land Units within the Command Radius when at least two enemies are adjacent to Trung Nhi. |
| One Single Cry | +10 with Coordinated Attack and Focus Fire. |
| 65 Strongholds | +5 against Fortified Districts. |
| Hai Bà Trung | +15 to Trung Nhi when defending. |
This is a situation-dependent tree: its listed bonuses reward conditions such as Tropical terrain, friendly territory, nearby enemies, coordinated orders, fortified targets, or defending. Its value therefore depends on whether those conditions fit the map and campaign, rather than on a universal tier list.

The July 22, 2025 notes state that Trung Nhi is not added to saves created before version 1.2.3; they also say her abilities, promotions, and appearance persist across subsequent Ages. The same notes caution that some new effects may require starting a new game or advancing to the next Age before they appear. If a listed ability is missing, check the version and save state before assuming the effect is unavailable in all games.

A later patch note illustrates why exact effects should be checked against the installed version: Firaxis’ August 19, 2025 update notes say Heroic Assault properly deals 50 damage to hostile units when used by a normal Army Commander. That is a specific fix for that ability and Commander type, not a general rule for every Commander attack.

A quick decision framework
- Choose Bastion when the immediate job is keeping a force effective while it is under attack.
- Choose Assault when the plan depends on initiating combat.
- Choose Logistics when operational support or increasing army size matters most.
- Choose Maneuver when getting the force across the map is the main constraint.
- Choose Leadership when strengthening the Commander itself is the priority and no unique tree better fits the campaign.
- For a unique tree, compare its conditions with the terrain, territory, targets, and orders you expect to use; read the current in-game descriptions before committing promotion choices.
