Start with a layout that feels comfortable, use Quick Skills if you are new to fighting games, and test your inputs in Training Mode before settling on changes. The game supports button customization and PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers, but official sources do not identify one controller type or layout as competitively superior.
Where to change your controller settings
PlayStation says you can configure buttons from three places:
- Character Select
- The mid-match Pause Menu
- Options
Use whichever route is convenient, then check the on-screen control reminders in your current build. The available support information confirms button configuration but does not document a complete per-button remapping matrix.
Choose Quick Skills or Command Inputs
If you are new to fighting games, Quick Skills are a sensible starting point: the official beginner guide says they execute with one button. Once you are comfortable with the game’s fundamentals, try Command Inputs in combos. The guide says Command Inputs offer slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge; these are the developer’s stated gameplay distinctions, not results of an independent performance test.

Build a layout around comfort and access
There is no evidence-backed preset to copy. Instead, make sure frequent actions are reachable without awkward hand movement, and keep the layout consistent while you learn. Consider:

- The redefined 6-button gamepad with wireless connectivity. Perfect for all SEGA’s classic Games.
- Compatible with Switch, Windows 10 or above, Android and Raspberry Pi.
- Turbo Function (unavailable on Switch).
- Bluetooth and rechargeable battery.
- Upgradeable firmware.
- Familiarity: Begin with a layout that feels natural from your current controller or fighting-game experience.
- Reach: Put actions you use often where you can press them reliably, rather than choosing a layout solely because someone else uses it.
- Remapping needs: Change only what is uncomfortable or difficult to reach, then practice the new mapping before changing it again.
- Input goals: If you want to learn motion inputs, practice Command Inputs deliberately; if you are learning the fundamentals, Quick Skills reduce the number of inputs to manage.
These are ergonomic and learning choices, not claims that one layout produces better competitive results.
Pick the controller type that suits you
PlayStation confirms support for any PlayStation 5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller. A standard controller, arcade stick, and leverless controller are all reasonable options if they are comfortable and compatible. Official sources reviewed do not provide a comparative test showing that one type is faster, more accurate, or competitively better. Confirm a specific device’s PS5 compatibility before using it.

Use Training Mode to check the result
Training Mode is the practical way to find out whether a mapping works for you. PlayStation says it includes command-input, frame-data, and damage displays, scenario presets, and bot settings with record/replay. Use these tools to inspect your inputs and practice situations that give you trouble; evaluate your own comfort and execution rather than assuming a setting is optimal.
For example, try the same sequence with your chosen layout, check whether the expected command registers, and repeat it under a relevant scenario. If an input is unreliable or a button is uncomfortable to reach, adjust the mapping and test again. The official support page also describes local and online friend training. See PlayStation’s game support details.

Learn the default team-action examples before remapping
The July 20, 2026 PlayStation.Blog beginner guide uses these controls in its Open Beta examples: Light (□), Medium (△), and Heavy (○). Repeated Light, Medium, or Heavy attacks can link into stronger follow-ups. The guide also describes × as Assemble Assist and directional input plus L2 as the character-switch command; the assist direction selects the second, third, or fourth teammate.
These are examples from that guide, not a guarantee that controls remain unchanged in every current build. Check the in-game reminders before relying on them, especially if you have remapped buttons.
