Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you own an image or have explicit permission to modify it, first look for the original project or an unwatermarked export. That gives you a clean copy without trying to recreate pixels hidden by the mark. If the watermark is on an Adobe Stock preview, license the asset to receive the unwatermarked version. Retouching tools are a fallback: they replace the marked area with surrounding or generated content, not the exact pixels underneath.
Before you remove a watermark
Use these methods only on images you own or are explicitly allowed to modify. Adobe Firefly states, “You can remove watermarks from images you own or have explicit rights to modify,” and warns that removing marks from images without those rights may violate copyright law. This is Adobe’s vendor guidance, not legal advice for every jurisdiction. Check the asset’s license and the rules that apply to your intended use. Adobe Firefly: Remove text from pictures
Choose the cleanest route
| Situation | Best route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You created or have access to the source image | Reopen the project or original and export a clean copy | Avoids reconstructing obscured pixels. |
| The image is an Adobe Stock preview | License the asset | Adobe says licensing removes the preview watermark and provides the asset in its highest available resolution. Check the current license for permitted uses. Adobe Stock usage and licensing FAQ |
| You have rights to edit, but no clean source | Try Photoshop Content-Aware Fill or Remove, or Firefly Generative Remove | These methods fill the marked area; results depend on the surrounding image and require review. |
Recover or export the original
Check the app or service where the image was created, the project file, your account’s asset library, and export settings. If a clean source exists, export it again rather than editing the flattened, watermarked copy. This is especially useful when the mark covers a face, text, a game interface, or another detailed area where a fill would have to invent missing visual information.
Remove a watermark in Photoshop
Content-Aware Fill
- Open the image in Photoshop and select the watermark with an appropriate selection tool.
- Right-click inside the selection and choose Content-Aware Fill.
- Adjust the sampling area so Photoshop draws from suitable nearby pixels, then confirm the fill.
- Inspect the result at full size. If the fill damages important detail or creates visible repetition, undo it and try a different selection or sampling area.
Photoshop replaces the selected area using surrounding pixels. It may be a practical choice when the mark sits over relatively consistent texture, but Adobe’s documentation does not promise good results on intricate backgrounds. Adobe Photoshop: Content-Aware Fill

Remove tool
- Select the Remove tool in Photoshop and brush over or loop around the unwanted mark.
- Choose whether generative AI is automatic, on, or off, depending on the available tool options and the result you need.
- Use the option to create a new layer if you want to keep the edit separate from the original image.
- Review the filled area and surrounding edges; undo or revise the selection if artifacts appear.
Adobe’s current desktop documentation describes these controls, but does not establish a universal success rate. Keeping the edit on a separate layer makes it easier to compare and revise. Adobe Photoshop: Remove tool
Use Firefly Generative Remove
- Open the image in Firefly’s Generative Remove workflow.
- Paint over the watermark or text you are authorized to remove.
- Generate a fill based on the surrounding image context.
- Review the generated result and keep the original available for comparison.
Generative Remove creates replacement content informed by nearby context; it does not recover the exact pixels hidden by the mark. Use it only when you have rights to modify the image. Adobe Firefly: Remove text from pictures

Preserve provenance and edit responsibly
A visible watermark is different from provenance information such as Content Credentials. Removing a visible mark does not establish whether provenance metadata is present or what it says. Adobe advises organizations to assess applicable laws, regulations, and platform policies when deciding whether disclosure is required. Requirements depend on the use and jurisdiction; do not present AI-generated or AI-edited work as unmodified. Adobe: Content Credentials
No success-rate figure or independent comparison establishes which removal tool works best across images. The useful factors are whether a clean source or licensed asset is available, how much detail the mark covers, the background behind it, and whether you can make and review edits reversibly.
