Use Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 Controller if you want Ocarina of Time to feel closest to the original. Its layout is designed to look and operate like the N64 controller, including the classic hand position described in the original manual. If you prefer Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, open the game’s View/Change Controls screen and remap the three C-button actions to inputs your right thumb can reach without losing movement or camera control.
The best setup at a glance
There is no single modern-controller layout that fits every hand, but there is a clear starting point:

- Most authentic: Nintendo 64 Controller.
- Best modern-controller principle: keep movement on the left stick, put the three C-button actions on distinct right-side inputs, and keep Z targeting and shielding on the controls shown for Z and the appropriate shoulder trigger in the game’s mapping screen.
- Best way to remap: use Ocarina of Time’s in-game View/Change Controls menu rather than guessing from a generic Switch preset.
- Best way to learn the layout: save it, then test movement, targeting, shielding, item use, C-up/Navi, and every ocarina note in a safe area before entering a dungeon.
The C buttons deserve special attention because they do more than select equipment. They also play ocarina notes, so an awkward arrangement affects ordinary exploration, combat, item selection, camera use and musical puzzles.

Ocarina of Time was built around three C buttons, a central analog stick and a dedicated Z button. On a modern controller, those original inputs may be represented by a right stick, face buttons, shoulder buttons or another combination. The game remains playable with a modern pad, but the physical distance between inputs changes how quickly you can switch items, look around, call Navi, target an enemy or play a sequence of notes.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A good layout minimizes the number of times your right thumb must leave the control used for camera movement. It also prevents two C actions from sharing an input or becoming difficult to distinguish under pressure. This matters most in dungeons, where you may need to move, adjust the camera, shield, target and use an item in quick succession.
Nintendo’s original manual recommends the classic hand position, including placing the left index finger on the rear Z button. The official Nintendo 64 Controller is therefore more than a cosmetic replica: it preserves the physical relationship the game was designed around.

| Joy-Con 2 | Not an N64-shaped layout | Depends on the inputs you assign and your thumb reach | Assign and verify the controls shown for Z and the relevant shoulder input | Comfort depends on the chosen button arrangement | Supported by Switch 2 system-level mapping and the game’s control screen | Not stated | Not stated |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Not an N64-shaped layout | Right-stick or face-button placement can be customized | Use the in-game labels rather than assuming a preset | Usually depends on how easily your right thumb can distinguish three inputs | Supported by Switch 2 system-level mapping and the game’s control screen | Not stated | Not stated |

The official Nintendo 64 Controller is the simplest recommendation when authenticity is the priority. A third-party N64-style pad can be a reasonable alternative, but compatibility, availability and retail conditions can change. Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller are practical choices when you already own them; they simply require more attention to the mapping.
How to view and change Ocarina of Time’s controls
Use the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics menu for the game/controller combination you are actually playing. The labels shown there are more reliable than a remembered button diagram because they reflect the current controller.
- Start Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics app.
- Press the Minus button to open the Suspend Menu.
- Select View/Change Controls.
- Press Y to view how the original N64 buttons map to the connected controller.
- If the displayed arrangement is uncomfortable, choose Change Controls and customize the game/controller combination.
- Save the layout.
- Test movement, Z targeting, shielding, item use, C-up/Navi and ocarina notes before continuing with difficult gameplay.
The important distinction is between View Controls and Change Controls. The first lets you inspect the translation from the original buttons. The second lets you alter that translation for the controller you are using. Do not assume that a button serving as C-right on one controller will occupy the same physical position on another.
A practical modern-controller layout
Start with Nintendo’s displayed mapping, then adjust only the inputs that feel hard to reach. The goal is not to imitate a particular internet preset; it is to preserve the roles of the original controls while keeping the right thumb mobile.

Keep movement on the left stick
Leave Link’s movement on the left stick. Moving it to a different control can make the game feel unfamiliar and can complicate simultaneous movement and camera adjustments. The left stick is also the stable reference point for judging the rest of the layout.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGive each C action a distinct input
Assign C-left, C-down and C-right to three clearly different right-side inputs. A right-stick arrangement can work well because the directions are visually and physically separated. Face or shoulder buttons can also work if you can identify each one without looking down.
Do not place two C actions on inputs that are easy to confuse, especially if one is used for an item you need during combat. The best choice is the one that lets your thumb move between all three actions without stretching far from camera control.
Reserve an immediate input for C-up and Navi
C-up has a special role because it calls Navi and provides the upward-looking or contextual function associated with that original button. Put it on an input you can reach immediately, rather than burying it behind a modifier or an awkward stick click. Confirm the exact label in View/Change Controls after saving.
Preserve Z targeting and shielding
Keep lock-on and shielding on the inputs Nintendo identifies for Z and the relevant shoulder trigger. The exact physical button depends on the connected controller, so use the displayed labels rather than transferring a button name from a different pad. The control should be reachable while your left thumb remains on movement.

Ocarina of Time asks you to look around while selecting items. If the same physical motion both changes the camera and activates an item, accidental inputs become more likely. A layout that leaves the right stick available for camera work while placing C actions on nearby, distinct buttons can be easier to manage, provided your hand can reach those buttons comfortably.

Ocarina controls: making note input comfortable
The three C buttons are also ocarina notes, so your arrangement should be judged by musical sequences as well as combat. The relevant question is not only whether each note works, but whether you can play a short sequence without losing your place.
- Choose three inputs with obvious physical separation.
- Avoid placing two frequently adjacent notes on buttons that feel identical under your thumb.
- Keep C-up/Navi close enough to reach when a song or contextual prompt requires it.
- Play several notes in succession in a safe area before attempting a puzzle or event where a mistake costs time.
- If a sequence feels awkward, return to Change Controls and move only one C action at a time so you can tell which change helped.
There is no evidence that one universal modern mapping is superior for every player. Hand size, whether you use the right stick for the camera, and whether you prefer face buttons or shoulder inputs all affect the result. The reliable method is to use Nintendo’s original-button display as the reference and evaluate the physical reach on your own controller.
Testing the saved layout before a dungeon
Do a short functional check after every remap. A low-risk area is better than a dungeon room because you can concentrate on the controls without enemies, hazards or a time-sensitive objective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Movement: walk in each direction and make sure the left stick still behaves as expected.
- Camera: move the camera through the full range you normally use.
- Z targeting: lock onto a nearby target and release the lock.
- Shielding: raise the shield while moving and while targeted.
- C actions: activate each of the three assigned C inputs separately and confirm the intended item or function appears.
- C-up/Navi: press the assigned input and verify that it performs the C-up function.
- Ocarina: play individual notes and a short sequence without looking at the controller.
- Recovery: open the Suspend Menu again and confirm the saved arrangement is still selected.
If one function fails, revisit the mapping screen instead of changing several buttons at once. A one-input change makes it easier to identify whether the problem was an incorrect assignment, an uncomfortable reach or a misunderstood label.
Using Nintendo’s system-level button mapping
Switch 2 also provides console-level button mapping for Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. These mappings are saved on the console, not on the controller. You can reset them from Quick Settings.
System-level mapping can help when a controller’s physical arrangement is uncomfortable across multiple games, but it adds another layer between the original N64 labels and the buttons you press. After changing a console mapping, reopen Ocarina of Time’s View/Change Controls screen and verify the game’s displayed assignments again. Otherwise, a control that worked before the system change may no longer be where you expect it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a change that applies only to Ocarina of Time, the game’s own Change Controls option is usually the cleaner approach. Use system-level mapping when you intentionally want the altered button behavior elsewhere on the console, and remember that Quick Settings can restore the system defaults if the arrangement becomes confusing.
Choosing between the main options
Choose the Nintendo 64 Controller when authenticity matters most
The official Nintendo 64 Controller is the closest ergonomic match because Nintendo designed it for the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics library and describes it as operating like the original. It preserves the classic relationship between movement, C-button actions and the rear Z button. This is the least complicated choice if you want the game to resemble its original console experience.
Choose Joy-Con 2 when portability is the priority
Joy-Con 2 works with the game, and Switch 2 supports system-level remapping for it. Expect to spend time in View/Change Controls deciding where C actions and Z functions feel natural. The best arrangement depends strongly on how you hold the controllers and whether you prefer stick directions, face buttons or shoulder inputs for the C functions.
Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller when you want a conventional modern pad
The Switch 2 Pro Controller offers a familiar modern shape and supports system-level mapping. Begin with Nintendo’s displayed assignment, then place the three C actions where your right thumb can distinguish them quickly. Keep the camera and item functions from competing for the same motion whenever possible.
Consider an N64-style third-party pad only after checking current terms
The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is an N64-style alternative that has been reported working wirelessly on Switch 2 with Ocarina of Time. Compatibility, stock, pricing and retailer policies can change, so verify those details for the United States before buying. After connecting it, still open the game’s control screen and test every function; an N64-shaped shell does not guarantee that every button is assigned exactly as you expect.
Common problems and fixes
“The buttons do not match the diagram I remember.”
Open the Suspend Menu with Minus and select View/Change Controls. Press Y to see how the original N64 buttons map to the current controller. The connected hardware and any system-level remapping may change the physical result.

“I cannot reach all three C actions quickly.”
Move the C actions to three distinct right-side inputs. Test them without looking down, and keep the input for C-up/Navi especially easy to reach. If you use the right stick for the camera, try nearby face or shoulder inputs instead, but avoid sacrificing clear separation between the three actions.
“Z targeting or shielding feels wrong after remapping.”
Return to the labels Nintendo shows for Z and the relevant shoulder trigger. Verify both functions independently, then test them while moving. A mapping can appear correct in the menu yet feel awkward when your left thumb is also controlling Link.
“The ocarina notes are easy to confuse.”
Assign the three note inputs to controls with different shapes or directions, then play a sequence in a safe area. Change one note at a time and retest. The objective is consistent physical reach, not a particular button naming convention.
“A system remap affected more than this game.”
Because console-level mappings are stored on Switch 2, they can influence other games using that controller. Reset the mapping from Quick Settings if necessary, then make an Ocarina-specific adjustment through the game’s Change Controls menu.
“A third-party controller connected, but the layout is unexpected.”
Check current Switch 2 compatibility first, then inspect the in-game mapping. Confirm movement, Z targeting, shielding, all three C actions, C-up/Navi and ocarina notes before relying on the controller for a long session.
A simple decision framework
| Your priority | Recommended starting point | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Original feel and hand position | Nintendo 64 Controller | Use the displayed original mapping and test the rear Z position. |
| You already own Joy-Con 2 | Joy-Con 2 with in-game remapping | Keep movement on the left stick and place C actions on reachable, distinct right-side inputs. |
| You prefer a conventional modern pad | Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Start from Nintendo’s mapping, then optimize C-button reach and Z access. |
| You want an N64-style alternative | 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller, after checking current terms | Verify compatibility, then inspect and test the saved mapping in Ocarina of Time. |
| You want one remap across several games | Switch 2 system-level mapping | Remember that the change is saved on the console and can be reset from Quick Settings. |
Final recommendation
For the closest match to Ocarina of Time’s original ergonomics, use the official Nintendo 64 Controller. For Joy-Con 2 or the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, do not settle for an uncomfortable preset: open View/Change Controls, keep movement on the left stick, give each C action a distinct reachable input, reserve an immediate input for C-up/Navi, and verify Z targeting, shielding and ocarina notes in a safe area. That approach preserves the game’s important control relationships while adapting them to the controller in your hands.
