Dokploy is the best like-for-like Coolify alternative for most VPS users in 2026. It combines a web dashboard with Docker Compose, multi-server operation, databases, monitoring, backups, rollbacks, environments, teams, notifications, custom build servers, volume backups and preview deployments. Choose Dokku instead if you want a minimal, Git-push workflow; CapRover if Docker Swarm and a simple dashboard matter most; Kamal if deployments should live in repository configuration and run from the command line; or Portainer if you mainly need a container-management UI rather than a complete platform as a service.

Which Coolify alternative should you choose?

Your choice depends less on the brand and more on the operating model you want. A dashboard-led team platform points to Dokploy. A single-server git push workflow points to Dokku. CapRover suits users who specifically want a Swarm-oriented dashboard. Kamal is for teams comfortable managing deployment from shell commands and repository files. Portainer is best understood as a broad container-management console, not a direct PaaS replacement.

Tool Best fit Interface and deployment model Important documented characteristics
Dokploy Closest Coolify replacement Web UI with Docker Compose and multi-server controls Databases, monitoring, backups, rollbacks, environments, teams, notifications, custom build servers, volume backups and preview deployments
Dokku Minimal Git-driven PaaS on one server CLI/API; deploy with git push Buildpacks or Dockerfiles, GitLab/Gitea integrations, scheduled jobs and a scheduler that can operate across servers
CapRover Dashboard plus Docker Swarm Web UI with Swarm-oriented capabilities Its comparison entry documents no native Compose support, built-in user permissions, built-in backups, preview deployments or teams
Kamal Repository-defined, command-line deployment Imperative Docker commands to bare metal or cloud VMs Zero-downtime deploys, rolling restarts, asset bridging, remote builds and accessory services; current documentation labels version 2.12.0
Portainer Managing existing container environments Web UI for several container back ends Manages Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI; Community Edition is free and open source, while Business Edition adds licensed features such as RBAC and registry management

The feature-level comparison for Dokploy, CapRover, Dokku and Coolify is documented in Dokploy’s comparison table. Treat individual capabilities as version-sensitive and verify the current project documentation before a production migration.

Dokploy: the closest one-for-one replacement

Dokploy is the default recommendation when you want Coolify’s general shape without giving up Compose-based deployment. Its documented feature set covers the operational pieces that usually force teams to assemble several add-ons: a UI, Docker Compose, multiple nodes and servers, databases, monitoring, backups, rollbacks, environments, teams, notifications, custom build servers, volume backups and preview deployments.

Why Dokploy fits Coolify users

  • Compose fidelity: existing Compose files are a natural starting point, reducing the need to remodel services into a platform-specific format.
  • Team operation: environments, teams and notifications are included in the comparison, which matters when more than one person deploys or reviews changes.
  • Recovery features: backups, volume backups and rollbacks address the failure modes that a bare container dashboard leaves to you.
  • Growth path: multi-node, multi-server and custom build-server support allow the control plane to remain useful as workloads outgrow one VPS.
  • Preview workflows: preview deployments are explicitly listed, making branch or pull-request environments part of the platform rather than a hand-built script.

When Dokploy is not the right choice

If your priority is the smallest possible control plane and a single command such as git push dokku main, Dokku is simpler. If you deliberately want imperative shell-driven deployments with no dashboard, Kamal is a better conceptual match. A dashboard also does not eliminate infrastructure work: you still need to secure the VPS, patch the operating system, monitor capacity and test restores.

Dokku: the lightest Git-push workflow

Dokku’s official documentation describes it as “an extensible, open source Platform as a Service that runs on a single server of your choice.” That sentence captures its strongest use case: one VPS, a repository, and a deployment path centered on Git rather than a web control plane.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Dokku builds applications

Dokku can build from a Dockerfile or detect a supported language and build it with buildpacks. GitLab and Gitea integrations, scheduled jobs and API/CLI control are documented capabilities. The scheduler can support multi-server operation, but the basic product model remains a single-server PaaS; do not assume that scheduler features provide the same experience as a full multi-node dashboard.

Dokku memory requirements

Scheduler Documented minimum memory Qualification
Docker scheduler 1 GB system memory Minimum stated by Dokku’s current installation documentation
K3s scheduler 2 GB on every node Minimum applies to each node, not merely the controller

See the current prerequisites and installation notes at Dokku’s installation documentation. A minimum is not a comfortable production budget: databases, build processes, logs and traffic can consume substantially more memory, so leave headroom or add swap carefully.

Choose Dokku when

  • You operate one main VPS and want the fewest moving parts.
  • Your team is comfortable with SSH, Git hooks and command-line administration.
  • You prefer buildpacks or Dockerfiles over composing a platform from a dashboard.
  • You can supply your own backup, monitoring and access-control processes where the platform does not provide them in the same integrated way.

CapRover: dashboard-first Swarm deployment

CapRover is the alternative to consider when a web dashboard and Docker Swarm are more important than strict Docker Compose compatibility. In the documented comparison, CapRover has a UI and Swarm-oriented capabilities, but lacks Compose support, built-in user permissions, built-in backups, preview deployments and teams.

  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

What that trade-off means

  • Good fit: an operator who wants to deploy and inspect services through a browser while staying within a Swarm-oriented model.
  • Migration friction: Compose-heavy applications may need adaptation instead of a direct file import.
  • Team controls: if several people need granular permissions or shared environments, verify the current CapRover documentation and plan an external access model.
  • Data protection: the comparison does not list built-in backups, so database and volume backup design remains your responsibility.

These are workflow-level recommendations based on the published comparison, not a promise that every current release has identical limits. Check CapRover’s own release documentation for the version you intend to install.

Kamal: deployments kept in code and the shell

Kamal is aimed at a different question: “How do we deploy containerized applications without introducing a dashboard or a Swarm control plane?” Its official site says Kamal provides zero-downtime deploys, rolling restarts, asset bridging, remote builds, accessory service management and the tools needed to deploy and manage a production web app with Docker. The current documentation labels the release as version 2.12.0.

How Kamal differs from a PaaS dashboard

Kamal uses imperative Docker commands driven by repository configuration. You define servers, roles, images, accessories and deployment settings in code, then execute deployment commands from your workstation or CI system. It works with any containerizable web application and targets bare metal or cloud VMs. There is no claim here that it reconciles a desired Swarm state or provides a Coolify-style catalog of one-click services.

Operational strengths

  • Repeatability: deployment configuration can be reviewed, versioned and changed through normal code review.
  • Availability: rolling restarts and zero-downtime deployment features reduce interruption during releases when the application architecture supports them.
  • Flexible infrastructure: you can target a low-cost cloud VM or your own bare-metal server instead of adopting a specific orchestration platform.
  • Accessories: supporting services such as databases or caches can be managed alongside the application, subject to your backup and lifecycle design.

Read the current workflow and supported capabilities at Kamal’s official site. Kamal’s documentation names Hetzner, DigitalOcean and OVH as examples of low-cost infrastructure; prices and availability vary by region and date.

Portainer: useful container management, not a full Coolify clone

Portainer’s documentation describes a UI that manages Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI. That breadth makes it valuable when you already run containers and need a central operational console. It does not, by itself, make Portainer a like-for-like application PaaS.

Edition differences

Edition Documented position
Community Edition Free and open source
Business Edition Licensed edition with additional features such as role-based access control and registry management

Consult Portainer’s documentation for the current platform matrix and edition terms. You may still need separate systems for Git-based preview environments, application rollbacks, database-aware backups and build orchestration. Portainer is therefore strongest as a management layer around infrastructure you already understand.

Coolify as the baseline

Coolify remains a sensible baseline rather than a problem that every VPS owner must solve. Its documentation states, “if Docker can package it, Coolify can run it,” and documents Docker-image databases plus more than 300 open-source one-click service templates. Those templates can be a major time saver when you want common services without writing each deployment definition yourself.

Compare alternatives against the parts of Coolify you actually use: Compose import, templates, preview environments, team access, backups, monitoring, rollbacks or multi-server control. Replacing a feature you never use can add operational work without improving your deployment.

Feature-by-feature decision framework

Question Best starting point Reason
Do you want a dashboard and the closest Compose-based experience? Dokploy Documented UI, Compose, multi-server operation, backups, monitoring, teams and previews
Do you want the lightest single-server Git workflow? Dokku Git/API/CLI model with buildpacks or Dockerfiles and a 1 GB Docker-scheduler minimum
Is Docker Swarm the deciding technology? CapRover Dashboard and Swarm-oriented capabilities, with the documented feature omissions noted above
Should deployment be entirely repository- and CLI-driven? Kamal Imperative Docker deployment, rolling restarts, remote builds and accessories
Do you mainly need to inspect and operate several container back ends? Portainer UI spans Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI

How to plan a VPS migration

  1. Inventory the current stack. Record application images, Compose files, persistent volumes, databases, secrets, domains, TLS certificates, cron jobs, webhooks and external services. A platform switch fails most often when an unlisted dependency is forgotten.
  2. Classify stateful data. Separate disposable containers from databases, uploads and queues. Export a database and perform a test restore before changing the production endpoint.
  3. Choose the deployment model. Select Dokploy for a dashboard and integrated platform features, Dokku for Git push, CapRover for Swarm, Kamal for repository-driven commands, or Portainer for broad container administration.
  4. Size the VPS with headroom. Dokku’s figures are minimums, not universal recommendations. Account for peak application memory, image builds, database cache, logs, monitoring and temporary migration capacity.
  5. Recreate secrets and networking deliberately. Use the target platform’s secret mechanism, map only required ports, and keep databases on private networks where possible. Do not copy plaintext credentials into a public repository.
  6. Deploy a staging copy. Verify health checks, background workers, scheduled jobs, file permissions, outbound mail, webhooks and TLS renewal before switching DNS.
  7. Test recovery, not just deployment. Restore a database and volume backup onto a separate instance, confirm application startup, and document the exact commands or UI path another operator would follow.
  8. Cut over with a rollback window. Lower DNS TTL ahead of time when practical, switch traffic only after staging checks pass, and keep the previous deployment intact until logs and user journeys are normal.

Infrastructure responsibilities you still own

A self-hosted PaaS changes who operates the control plane; it does not remove that work. Regardless of the tool, plan for:

  • Operating-system and container-runtime updates, with a maintenance window and rollback plan.
  • Firewall rules, SSH key management, least-privilege accounts and prompt removal of unused access.
  • Encrypted, off-server backups with retention policies and regularly tested restores.
  • Metrics, logs, disk and memory alerts, certificate-expiry alerts and a way to inspect failed deployments.
  • Incident procedures covering a full VPS loss, corrupted volume, expired credential, failed image build and DNS mistake.
  • Capacity planning for CPU, memory, disk I/O, bandwidth and build-time spikes.

Kamal’s documentation explicitly discusses bare-metal and cloud-VM deployment, and the same responsibility applies to every self-hosted alternative: the provider supplies infrastructure, while you remain accountable for hardening, updates, backups, observability and incident response.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Assuming a Compose file guarantees portability

Compose syntax, volume paths, health checks, secrets and reverse-proxy assumptions can differ between platforms. Validate each service on a staging VPS instead of treating file acceptance as proof of identical behavior.

Putting production databases on a disposable server

A one-click database deployment is not a backup strategy. Keep encrypted copies outside the VPS, test restoration and document credentials and version compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the smallest VPS because the minimum fits

A 1 GB minimum can be consumed by the operating system, a build and a database at the same time. Leave memory for bursts, or move builds and heavy stateful services to separate resources.

Confusing a management UI with an application platform

Portainer can show and operate many back ends, but you may still need external CI, backup, preview and release processes. Define those gaps before selecting it as a replacement.

Ignoring team and access requirements

If several people deploy, verify role boundaries, auditability and environment separation. The comparison specifically lists teams and built-in permissions differently across Dokploy, CapRover and Dokku; do not assume a shared admin login is an acceptable substitute.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Bottom line

Start with Dokploy for the most complete Coolify-style replacement on a VPS. Pick Dokku when simplicity and git push matter more than a dashboard. Pick CapRover for a Swarm-centered workflow, Kamal for code-and-CLI deployments, and Portainer when container administration—not a full PaaS feature set—is the real requirement. Whichever route you choose, budget time for security updates, backups, monitoring and recovery drills; self-hosting transfers those duties to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Kubernetes to replace Coolify?

No. Dokploy, Dokku, CapRover and Kamal can run workloads on Docker-based VPS infrastructure without requiring Kubernetes. Portainer can manage Kubernetes when you already use it, but Kubernetes is not a prerequisite for these alternatives.

Which option is best for one small VPS?

Dokku is the most minimal fit when you want a Git-push workflow on one server. Dokploy is preferable when you also need a dashboard, Compose support, backups, monitoring or team features.

Is CapRover better than Coolify?

Neither is universally better. CapRover is a reasonable choice when Docker Swarm and a dashboard are your priorities; Coolify is the broader baseline if you rely on Compose, one-click templates, previews or integrated operational features.

Can I move a Coolify application directly to Dokploy?

Often you can start from the application’s Docker Compose definition, but verify volumes, secrets, health checks, domains, databases and proxy behavior in staging before production cutover.
