For a roleplay server you can join now, start by checking the live listing and Discord for Life RP, Pandahut Unturned, Roez #1, or Brad’s Gaming Network. Populations, rules and availability change quickly, so verify status, region, whitelist requirements, map downloads and connection details immediately before joining. To run your own public server, install the official Unturned Dedicated Server with SteamCMD, create a Game Server Login Token, configure internet reachability, then build the rules, jobs, economy and moderation systems that make roleplay work.
Best Unturned RP servers to check first
No server directory can guarantee a stable population. A listing may be online while its Discord is quiet, a wipe may have changed the rules, or a supposedly roleplay-focused server may now be mostly PvP. Treat the entries below as starting points and confirm the current status in the operator’s live channels.

Directory status is inherently temporary. Unturned-servers.net says its server status is refreshed every five minutes, but a five-minute-old result still cannot tell you whether a server will be populated at your play time. Look for recent messages, restart announcements and players discussing the current wipe rather than relying on a single green “online” indicator.
How to choose an RP server that fits you
“Roleplay” covers everything from light character names and occasional police events to strict, application-only communities where breaking character can result in a warning. Compare servers on the dimensions below instead of choosing by slot count alone.

Population, region and ping
Ask for the actual concurrent player count during your normal play window, not just maximum capacity. A 90-slot server with 12 regular players may feel emptier than a 32-slot server that reaches capacity each evening. Choose the geographically closest region that has a healthy population; high latency makes vehicle control, firefights and voice communication harder.
Roleplay standard and enforcement
Read the rules for definitions of random deathmatch, vehicle ramming, metagaming, powergaming, combat logging and safe zones. Serious communities usually require character names, applications, evidence for reports and staff-led escalation. Casual servers may allow open joining and event-based RP. Neither style is automatically better, but a mismatch will make the server feel frustrating.

Whitelist and onboarding
Check whether you can join immediately, must submit an application, or need an interview before receiving a role. A whitelist can reduce disruptive players, but it also means you need to plan ahead. Look for a rules quiz, starter guide, newcomer channel and a way to ask questions without interrupting live scenes.
Map, Workshop downloads and wipes
Custom maps and large Workshop collections can make a server distinctive while increasing download time and compatibility risk. Find out the map name, approximate download size, required Workshop items and whether clients receive them automatically. Ask how often the world, characters and economy reset. A monthly wipe creates a different experience from a persistent world with seasonal resets.
Economy, jobs and monetization
Inspect how money enters and leaves the economy, whether jobs have meaningful differences, and whether property or vehicles are scarce. Ask what paid benefits exist and whether they affect combat, access or progression. Clear rules are more important than a particular monetization model: players should know what is cosmetic, what is convenience and what changes gameplay.
Staff activity and community health
Look for recent moderation decisions, restart notices, bug reports and support replies. A large Discord membership number can include inactive accounts. A smaller server with moderators online during your hours may provide better RP continuity. Confirm who handles appeals, how evidence is stored and whether administrators log their own actions.

- A Windows or Linux computer or a managed server with enough CPU, memory, storage and upload bandwidth for your intended population and Workshop content.
- SteamCMD, Valve’s command-line distribution tool.
- A separate, unique ServerID folder for the instance’s save data and configuration.
- A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for public-list visibility.
- Either Fake IP or correctly configured port forwarding for internet play.
- A stable map and Workshop configuration, plus time to test plugins and backups.
- A Discord or equivalent support channel, published rules and moderators covering your peak time zones.
A wired Ethernet connection is sensible for the host because it reduces local wireless variability, but Unturned does not require special hardware. The important factors are reliable uptime, sufficient upload capacity and a network path that lets players reach the server.
Install the official Unturned Dedicated Server
Smartly Dressed Games’ official documentation states that multiplayer servers use the Unturned Dedicated Server tool, installed and updated through SteamCMD. The procedure below applies to a new Windows or Linux instance; keep the server files separate from your personal game installation.

- Install SteamCMD. Download and extract the version for your operating system, then open a terminal or command prompt in its directory.
- Log in anonymously. At the SteamCMD prompt, run
login anonymous. A normal Steam account is not required for downloading the dedicated-server app. - Install or update the server. Run
app_update 1110390. Repeat this command whenever you intentionally update the server, and make a backup first. - Create a unique ServerID. Give the instance its own name, such as
MyRPServer. Its folder holds the save data, commands and configuration, so do not reuse the same ServerID for unrelated worlds. - Launch the instance. On Windows, use
ServerHelper.bat; on Linux, useServerHelper.sh. The official internet-server example is+InternetServer/MyServer, replacingMyServerwith your ServerID. - Wait for the first startup. Let the process create its configuration folders, then stop it cleanly with the server console command
shutdown. Avoid killing the process while it is writing save data.
Run one test startup before opening publicly. Confirm that the console reaches a ready state, that the selected map loads, and that the ServerID folder contains the expected save and configuration files.
Make the server visible on the internet
Create and apply a Game Server Login Token
All servers must use a valid Game Server Login Token to appear on the public server list. Create the token through the Steam game-server account process using your Steam account and the app ID 304930 for Unturned, then place the token in the server’s configuration as instructed by the official documentation. Treat it as a secret: do not post it in Discord, commit it to a public repository or include it in screenshots. If the token expires, is revoked or is attached to the wrong app, the server may run locally while disappearing from the list.

For internet play, configure either Fake IP or port forwarding. The official guidance says you do not need both and that Fake IP is easier for most servers. If you choose port forwarding, forward the server’s game port and permit the executable through the host firewall; the exact router labels vary by manufacturer. A LAN server is limited to invited or friend connections and does not appear in the public internet list.
Set the map and ports in Commands.dat
Use the server’s Commands.dat file for startup settings. Official examples include:
Map PEI
Map Washington
Map Russia
Map GermanyUse one map command, not all four. Assign a different port to every internet server on the same machine. The server-list query uses the next port after the game port, so reserve that adjacent port as well. After changing networking values, restart the instance and test from a connection outside your home network; a local test can succeed even when the router or firewall blocks public access.
Add Workshop maps and mods safely
Unturned can download configured Workshop content during startup. Create or edit WorkshopDownloadConfig.json and add the required Workshop file IDs in the format expected by the dedicated-server documentation. On startup, the server retrieves those items, and connecting clients receive the required files.
Use a staging ServerID to test every map, dependency and plugin before applying it to the public world. Keep a written list of Workshop IDs and versions. If a map update changes spawn points or loot, announce it before restarting; if a dependency is removed, clients may fail to connect or the server may stop during loading.
OpenMod or RocketMod?
Official documentation names Rocket and OpenMod as frameworks for advanced plugin setups. A current compatibility guide describes OpenMod as the modern default for new projects, while Rocket remains practical when a required plugin only targets Rocket, when migrating an established server or when your staff already understand Rocket permissions.

Do not install both frameworks merely because each offers a tempting feature. Mixed stacks can complicate permissions, event handling and updates. Whichever framework you choose, pin a known-good version, keep configuration backups and test after every Unturned update.
Design the roleplay before installing plugins
Plugins cannot decide what kind of community you are building. Write a short design document and turn each decision into a rule, permission or staff procedure.
Access model
- Open join: anyone can connect, with moderation handling problems after they occur.
- Whitelist: applicants are approved before they can play, reducing disruption but adding administrative work.
- Application plus interview: best for strict character-driven RP, but it requires scheduled staff coverage.
Roles and institutions
Define police, emergency medical services, civilian jobs, factions and criminal organizations. State who can issue licenses, seize vehicles, make arrests, operate medical facilities or approve new factions. Give each role a limited permission set and require logs for high-impact actions.
Economy and property
Specify starting money, salaries, taxes, shop ownership, house leases, vehicle prices and what happens to assets after a ban or wipe. Protect the economy from duplicated items and administrator-created cash. A simple economy that staff can audit is more sustainable than a complex one nobody understands.
Combat and evidence
Mark safe zones, combat areas and escalation requirements. Decide whether players must record incidents, whether body cameras are roleplay items or actual evidence, and how long logs are retained. Publish the appeal process before the first ban so players know where to submit screenshots, video and witness names.
Restarts, wipes and appeals
Publish restart times and expected downtime. Announce economy or map wipes well in advance, explain what carries over and archive the old rules. Keep a private moderation log with the decision, evidence, action and appeal result; never rely on a moderator’s memory.

- Publish rules, the Discord invite and exact join instructions before opening.
- Assign moderators across the server’s active time zones and give each role documented permissions.
- Announce restarts, wipes, economy changes and major Workshop updates in advance.
- Back up the ServerID folder and all plugin and configuration data before updates or migrations.
- Monitor actual concurrent players, crashes, Workshop download failures and support response times.
- Recheck GSLT validity, ports, map names and plugin compatibility after every game or framework update.
- Keep a staging instance so a broken plugin does not take the public world offline.
Troubleshooting common launch and connection problems
The server runs but is not listed
Confirm that a valid GSLT is present, the launch mode is the internet mode rather than LAN, and the server has completed startup without errors. Check that the game port and its query port are not already in use. If you selected port forwarding, verify the router rule and host firewall from an external network. If you selected Fake IP, remove conflicting forwarding rules and follow the current official setup for that mode.
Friends cannot connect directly
Check the public address and port, then test from a different network such as a phone hotspot. Verify that the map name is valid, the server is not still downloading Workshop files and the client has accepted every required download. A successful connection from the host computer alone does not prove that the instance is reachable from the internet.

Players disconnect during Workshop loading
Compare the server’s Workshop IDs with the player’s download and wait for startup to finish before inviting anyone. Remove one newly added item at a time on the staging instance to identify conflicts. Keep maps and plugins updated together when an author documents a dependency.

Check which framework the plugin targets, whether it is enabled, and whether the user’s permission group includes the command. After changing permissions, reload only when the plugin documents a safe reload; otherwise restart cleanly and inspect the console for version or dependency errors.
The economy is inflating or players are exploiting a job
Temporarily disable the affected payout, preserve transaction logs and reproduce the issue on staging. Audit item and currency creation permissions, then announce the correction and any compensating rollback. Do not silently alter balances without recording who was affected and why.
When managed hosting is worth considering
Self-hosting gives you control over files, ports and updates, but it also makes you responsible for uptime, backups, firewall configuration and recovery. A managed Unturned host can be worthwhile when you need a persistent public server, automated backups, a control panel or a data-center location closer to your players. It does not remove the need to design rules, test plugins, protect the GSLT and moderate the community. Compare backup frequency, CPU allocation, Workshop support, migration access, DDoS protection, cancellation terms and support response times before committing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I host an RP server only for friends?
Yes. Run it as a LAN or otherwise restrict access to the people you invite. It will not be visible in the public internet server list, so share the connection details directly and do not issue public whitelist applications.
Do I need a powerful gaming PC to host?
You do not need a gaming GPU because the dedicated server is not rendering the game. CPU headroom, memory, fast storage, stable upload bandwidth and reliable uptime matter more. The required capacity depends on player count, map complexity and Workshop plugins, so measure the instance under a staging load rather than choosing by GPU specifications.
How often should I wipe an RP server?
There is no universal interval. Persistent communities may avoid wipes and reset only when the map or economy is irreparably damaged; seasonal communities may schedule regular resets. Choose a cadence your staff can announce and support, document what carries over, and never surprise players with an unannounced loss of property or progress.
Can I migrate from Rocket to OpenMod later?
Usually, but it is a project rather than a switch. Inventory every plugin, permission group and stored data set, then identify OpenMod replacements or migration tools. Test commands, economy balances, roles and bans on a copy of the ServerID before changing the public instance, and keep the original backup until players have verified their data.
Why does a server show a large Discord population but few players in game?
Discord member and online counts include people who may be browsing, using other game modes or no longer active. Check the Unturned instance’s concurrent players during your own play hours and look for recent in-game events, support replies and restart notices.
