1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat “best” means for Core Keeper mods in 2026
Mods solve different problems, so a single top-10 list is misleading. A storage overhaul can make a long-established base easier to manage while also reducing inventory friction that is part of the unmodified game. A content mod can make a fresh world feel larger but introduce more save and compatibility variables. A combat overlay can improve decision-making without changing damage values at all.
The practical definition of “best” is therefore: the mod that delivers your intended change, supports your current Core Keeper version, has the correct client or server scope, and can be removed or updated without putting an important save at unnecessary risk.

Platform metadata is useful but time-sensitive. A 2026 mod.io catalog snapshot showed 169K total downloads for the Core Keeper index and 110 collections; a Steam Workshop browse snapshot showed 249 matching collection entries. Those numbers describe activity at the time of the snapshots, not a quality ranking or a guarantee that a mod is maintained today.
Where to discover and install mods
mod.io: the official Core Keeper mod source
mod.io describes its Core Keeper area as mods created by the community using the official Mod SDK. It is the primary place to inspect a mod’s description, supported game versions, scope designation, dependencies, update history and author notes. Treat those fields as compatibility information, not decoration: they determine whether a file belongs on your client, your server, or both.
Steam Workshop: browse and subscribe
Steam Workshop provides a browse-and-subscribe surface for Core Keeper mods and maps. It is convenient when your game is managed through Steam because installation is handled by the subscription system. Workshop search results also expose visual and interface projects such as Boss Health Bar, Enemy Health Bars and Improved Buff List.
Neither surface is a permanent guarantee of compatibility. A listing can remain visible after a game update, and a collection can contain entries with different maintenance histories. Open the individual listing and record its version, scope and last update before subscribing.
Best mods by player goal
For lighter balance and quality-of-life changes: MiniBalance
mod.io labels MiniBalance as adding “Some balance and QoL in weapons, gear and food.” That makes it a reasonable starting point for players who want fewer small annoyances without installing a large content expansion. The important question is how its changes interact with your current progression. Any adjustment to weapons, equipment or food can alter the value of resources and the difficulty curve, so it is better suited to a new world or a clearly documented test profile than to a carefully balanced existing run.
- Best fit: players who want several small balance and convenience changes in one package.
- Check first: the listing’s exact supported version and the full change list for weapons, gear and food.
- Main trade-off: progression and resource values may no longer match an unmodified world.
For a larger exploration game: Scenes+
Scenes+ is described on mod.io as adding over 100 new scenes. This is the strongest choice in the shortlist for players whose priority is discovering more places rather than reorganizing menus. A scene-heavy mod can increase the amount of content in a world, but it also creates more world-generation and save-data complexity than a purely visual interface change.
- Best fit: a fresh world where additional exploration is the central objective.
- Check first: the supported Core Keeper version, update cadence and whether the listing documents any interactions with other world or scene mods.
- Main trade-off: more content can make a world harder to reproduce consistently after a mod is removed or updated.
For a more manageable chest interface: Expanded Chest UI
Expanded Chest UI replaces the default chest interface with a more expandable, scrollable one. It addresses the problem of navigating large storage inventories without claiming to change the underlying capacity of every chest.

Sharpen your combat skills against a variety of monsters and mini-bosses, spend talent points to level up your abilities, and plan your strategy to conquer these colossal creatures of the underground. - EXPLORE WITH FRIENDS - Enjoy the adventure solo or team up in 2-8 player drop-in/drop-out online co-op. Play your way and explore at your own pace — celebrate the seasons, trade with merchants, hatch your new best friends, design the ultimate base, automate resource gathering, host your own dedicated server, create music on playable instruments and discover an unforgettable sandbox adventure.
- Best fit: builders and collectors whose bases contain many categories of items.
- Check first: multiplayer scope and whether every player who opens the modified interface needs the same files.
- Main trade-off: interface differences can be confusing when players in the same session do not have matching installations.
For more chest capacity: Double Chest Inventory
Double Chest Inventory doubles all chest inventory space, including modded chests, according to its mod.io description. This is a direct capacity increase rather than a presentation change. It can dramatically reduce trips between production areas and storage, but it also changes the inventory economy more than Expanded Chest UI does.
- Best fit: players who want substantially more storage per chest and accept a stronger convenience advantage.
- Check first: how the listing classifies client and server installation, especially for a dedicated server.
- Main trade-off: doubled capacity can make storage scarcity and base-layout decisions much less meaningful.
For automated planting: AutoPlant2
AutoPlant2 is listed as server-side. That designation matters: the authoritative installation belongs on the server rather than being treated as a purely local visual enhancement. Confirm the current listing’s requirements before joining a hosted world, and make sure the server operator knows the mod is present.
- Best fit: a cooperative or dedicated-server world that wants farming automation managed centrally.
- Check first: server compatibility, supported version and whether clients are required to install anything in addition to the server file.
- Main trade-off: automation can reduce the labor and planning involved in crop production.
For automatic replanting: Auto Replant
Auto Replant replants harvested crops by using a matching seed from the player’s inventory. Its listing also exposes a configurable chance for a golden crop. That gives the host or player more control over how strong the convenience effect should be than a fixed, all-or-nothing automation rule.
- Best fit: farms where harvesting is frequent and the player wants to preserve the planting step.
- Check first: the exact client/server designation and the configuration instructions for the golden-crop chance.
- Main trade-off: the mod still consumes seeds from inventory, and its configurable bonus can affect farming balance.
For clearer combat information: Boss Health Bar, Enemy Health Bars and Improved Buff List
These projects appear in Steam Workshop’s visual and user-interface results. Boss Health Bar and Enemy Health Bars make health information easier to read during fights, while Improved Buff List is aimed at tracking active effects. They are appropriate when the problem is information overload rather than insufficient damage or equipment.
- Best fit: players who lose track of enemy health, boss progress or active buffs during busy encounters.
- Check first: whether each listing is client-only, server-side or requires both sides, and whether its interface remains readable at your resolution.
- Main trade-off: additional labels and bars can create visual clutter, particularly when many enemies are on screen.
Comparison table: what each shortlisted mod changes
| Mod | Primary change | Scope information in the listing | Progression or usability trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| MiniBalance | Balance and quality-of-life changes to weapons, gear and food | Verify current client/server designation on mod.io | Can change combat and resource progression |
| Scenes+ | More than 100 new scenes | Verify current scope and dependencies on mod.io | More exploration, with greater world and save complexity |
| Expanded Chest UI | Expandable, scrollable chest interface | Verify multiplayer requirements | Easier navigation without necessarily adding capacity |
| Double Chest Inventory | Doubles inventory space in all chests, including modded chests | Verify current scope for clients and servers | Strong convenience gain that changes storage balance |
| AutoPlant2 | Farming automation | Listed as server-side | Centralized automation; server configuration matters |
| Auto Replant | Uses a seed from inventory to replant harvested crops; configurable golden-crop chance | Verify current scope and configuration instructions | Reduces repetitive planting while retaining seed consumption |
| Boss Health Bar | Boss health information | Workshop listing; verify scope | Better encounter readability, potentially more on-screen elements |
| Enemy Health Bars | Enemy health information | Workshop listing; verify scope | Useful target feedback, with possible screen clutter |
| Improved Buff List | Clearer active-effect display | Workshop listing; verify scope | More readable buffs, with a denser interface |
How to choose between mods that solve the same problem
When two mods appear to do the same job, compare them in this order:
- Supported game version: choose a listing that explicitly includes your installed Core Keeper version.
- Client/server scope: determine whether the file belongs on your computer, the host’s computer, a dedicated server, or a combination.
- Multiplayer requirement: note whether every player must subscribe or install the same files before joining.
- Progression impact: distinguish an interface improvement from a capacity, automation or balance change.
- Update recency: a recent update is useful evidence of maintenance, but it is not proof that the current game build works.
- Dependencies: install every required dependency listed by the author and keep its version compatible.
- Reversibility: prefer changes that can be removed without invalidating a world, and test anything that changes generation or item data in a backup copy.
Installing a Core Keeper mod through Steam Workshop
The documented Workshop path is deliberately short: subscribe, then restart the game. Use this procedure when the mod has a Steam Workshop page.
- Open the mod’s Steam Workshop page from Core Keeper’s Workshop browser.
- Read the description, supported version, scope, dependencies and multiplayer notes.
- Select Subscribe. Steam downloads the item through your Workshop subscriptions.
- Close and restart Core Keeper. The official installation guidance specifically requires a restart after subscribing.
- Load a test world or a backup of your main world before making irreversible progress with the mod enabled.
- Open the mod’s configuration or in-game controls, if the listing provides them, and confirm that the expected feature appears.
If the mod does not appear after a restart, check that Steam finished downloading it, that the listing still supports your game version and that no dependency was omitted. Unsubscribe only after closing the game, then restart again so the change is applied cleanly.

Installing a mod.io ZIP manually
The official installation documentation instructs manual installers to extract a downloaded mod.io ZIP into the Core Keeper data directory. The destination is:
CoreKeeper_DataStreamingAssetsModFolderName
- Download the ZIP from the mod.io listing and read its installation notes.
- Extract the ZIP rather than placing the compressed file itself in the game directory.
- Open the Core Keeper installation folder and locate
CoreKeeper_DataStreamingAssets. - Create or use the folder named by the mod’s installation instructions; the destination pattern is
CoreKeeper_DataStreamingAssetsModFolderName. - Copy the extracted mod files into that folder, preserving the directory structure supplied by the author.
- Restart Core Keeper and test the mod in a separate or backed-up world.
A common manual-install error is one extra folder level, such as placing the extracted folder inside another identically named folder. If the game does not detect the mod, compare the actual path with the documented pattern and inspect the ZIP’s top-level folders.

Client-side changes
A visual or interface mod may only affect the player who has it installed, but do not assume that from its appearance. Verify the listing’s scope. If the author marks it client-only, other players may not need the files; if the listing requires both sides, every required installation must be present before joining.
Recommended Free Tools
Server-side changes
Server-side entries such as AutoPlant2 must be installed and maintained where the listing specifies, normally on the host or dedicated server. Keep the server’s mod set documented so players know which files and versions are required. A player connecting with an incomplete or mismatched set can encounter missing features, rejected connections or inconsistent behavior.
Mixed mod sets
Do not assume that two players can freely choose different versions of a gameplay mod. Before a session, write down the exact mod names, versions, dependencies and scope. For a dedicated server, publish that list with the server instructions and update it whenever the server changes.
Versioning, beta status and legacy guides
The Core Keeping Modding Guide states that the modding tools and Steam Workshop integration are currently in beta. Beta infrastructure can change file locations, metadata conventions or the way updates are delivered, so recheck official installation guidance after a Core Keeper update.
Older guides built around Thunderstore or BepInEx may describe a previous support path. Thunderstore’s current notice says Core Keeper now uses mod.io for official mod support. Treat older BepInEx or Thunderstore instructions as legacy references until the specific mod author confirms that they still work with your game build. Do not mix an old loader workflow with the official Workshop or mod.io method unless the listing explicitly requires it.

A safe workflow for existing worlds
- Record the baseline: note your Core Keeper version, world name, current mods and multiplayer host.
- Back up the world: make a separate copy before installing a mod that changes scenes, item capacity, balance or automation.
- Add one major change at a time: interface-only additions are easier to isolate than several progression-changing mods installed together.
- Test the intended action: open a chest, harvest a crop, enter a combat encounter or visit a new area depending on the mod’s purpose.
- Check multiplayer: have the host and one joining player verify the same feature before inviting the full group.
- Keep a change log: record subscriptions, manual files, dependencies and removal dates so you can identify the cause of a problem.
Scenes+ and other world-content changes deserve the most caution because removing or changing them can affect areas already generated. Storage, balance and automation mods can also alter item counts or progression, so a backup is still appropriate even when the listing looks small.
Troubleshooting common failures
The mod is subscribed but nothing changed
- Restart Core Keeper after subscribing.
- Confirm Steam completed the download.
- Check that the listing supports your installed game version.
- Read the description for a required dependency or configuration step.
A manual mod is not detected
- Confirm that the ZIP was extracted, not copied intact.
- Compare the folder with
CoreKeeper_DataStreamingAssetsModFolderName. - Remove accidental duplicate folder levels.
- Restart the game after correcting the path.
Players cannot join a modded session
- Compare the host’s and clients’ mod names and versions.
- Check whether the listing requires client, server or both installations.
- Install the required dependency on every location specified by the author.
- For a dedicated server, verify that its mod set matches the published server instructions.
A feature works but the game feels unbalanced
Capacity increases, automated farming, balance edits and new content all change the original progression. Disable the mod in a backup copy, compare the affected activity, and decide whether a less intrusive alternative addresses the same problem. Expanded Chest UI, for example, changes navigation, while Double Chest Inventory changes how much a chest can hold; they are not interchangeable choices.
Recommended starting profiles
Low-impact organization profile
Begin with Expanded Chest UI and, if combat information is your concern, add one of the health-bar or buff-list interfaces after checking its scope. This profile focuses on readability and organization rather than resource generation or world content.
Automation profile
Choose AutoPlant2 or Auto Replant based on whether your server needs centralized automation or your farm needs seed-based replanting. Do not install both by default: compare their documented behavior first, then test one at a time so you can identify which system controls planting.
Exploration profile
Use Scenes+ in a new or backed-up world. Its advertised addition of over 100 scenes makes it a substantial content change, not a cosmetic add-on. Keep the mod version recorded for everyone who will explore the world.
Balance-adjustment profile
Use MiniBalance only after reading its current weapon, gear and food changes. It is appropriate when you want a different progression curve, not when you want the original balance with a cleaner inventory screen.
Quick Recap
Final selection checklist
- Does the mod solve the exact problem you have?
- Does the listing support your current Core Keeper version?
- Is it client-side, server-side or both, and do all required players know that?
- Are dependencies and configuration steps documented?
- Will it alter progression, storage capacity, farming output or world generation?
- Have you backed up an existing world?
- Can you identify and remove it if an update causes a problem?
