A Discord popup that appears while you play on a Space Engineers server is normally generated by the Discord or Steam client on your computer, not by the dedicated server. Start by identifying the popup: turn off Discord User Settings > Overlay > Enable Overlay for an in-game Discord panel, disable game-activity notifications if the message is a presence prompt, or use Steam’s notification controls if Steam branding is visible. Editing Space Engineers server files will not suppress a client-side popup for other players.

Identify which application owns the popup
The wording and branding matter because Discord has more than one type of in-game message, and Steam can produce a visually similar notification. A server invitation, activity announcement, overlay panel and Steam message do not share one master switch.

If you cannot identify the owner, read the exact text, look for the application logo and note whether the message appears as soon as Space Engineers starts, when you join a world, or only when a friend performs an action. Do not change server configuration until you know the popup is being rendered by the game server itself; the documented server controls cover the world and server operation, not another player’s desktop notifications.
Turn off the Discord Game Overlay
For a Discord-branded panel that appears over Space Engineers, use Discord’s documented global overlay switch first. Discord describes Game Overlay as an interface that lets you access Discord while a game is running without changing windows. This setting belongs to the Discord desktop client.

- Open the Discord desktop application.
- Select User Settings using the cogwheel.
- Open Overlay.
- Switch Enable Overlay off.
- Launch Space Engineers again and check whether the panel is gone.
This is the broadest remedy: it disables the overlay rather than only hiding one notification. If you rely on overlay chat, voice controls or other Discord interface elements while playing, those features will no longer be available over the game. If the popup disappears and you want those features for other games, Discord’s support guidance also discusses disabling the overlay for a specific game when overlay problems occur. The exact per-game controls can vary with the Discord desktop interface, so use the game-specific option shown in your Overlay or registered-game settings rather than changing Space Engineers server files.
Stop activity prompts without necessarily removing the overlay
An activity prompt is different from the overlay itself. It can remain after the overlay is disabled because Discord’s activity-sharing and notification controls are separate.
Disable game-activity notifications
- Open Discord User Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Turn off the game-activity notification option documented by Discord.
This targets prompts about game activity rather than every Discord interface feature. If you still want to open Discord over Space Engineers manually, this is usually the less disruptive first choice for a notification-only popup.
Remove Space Engineers from registered games
Discord’s Activity Sharing documentation identifies Registered Games as another place to control a game entry. Disable Space Engineers there if Discord keeps detecting it and generating activity-related messages. This prevents the registered-game entry from participating in the activity controls; it does not alter the Space Engineers world, server list or multiplayer permissions.

Turn off activity sharing
If you do not want Discord to publish or use game activity at all, turn off Activity Sharing. This is a wider privacy and notification change than removing one game. Review the setting before applying it if you want friends to continue seeing what you are playing.
When the popup is from Steam instead
Steam can display invitations, overlay messages and other notifications while Space Engineers is running. A Steam-branded popup will not be removed by changing Discord’s Overlay switch. Use Steam’s per-game overlay and notification controls in the Steam client, choosing the narrowest setting that matches the message.

Check the logo, colors and wording first. If disabling Discord’s overlay changes nothing but the popup clearly belongs to Steam, continue in Steam rather than repeatedly editing Discord activity settings. Conversely, if the message contains Discord controls or appears with Discord branding, Steam settings will not address it.
What a Space Engineers server owner can and cannot control
The Space Engineers dedicated-server GUI and configuration files manage the server installation, world and server operation. The documented dedicated-server material does not provide a Discord-popup switch. A Discord overlay is drawn by Discord on each player’s computer after the game is running, so a server administrator cannot centrally suppress it through the Space Engineers configuration.

This creates an important scope boundary:
- Player-side: each player can disable Discord Overlay, activity notifications, Registered Games or Activity Sharing in their own client.
- Server-side: the administrator can configure the Space Engineers server and world, but those settings do not rewrite another player’s Discord or Steam preferences.
- Mixed groups: one player may see a popup while another does not because their client settings, operating system or notification choices differ, even when both connect to the same server.
If several players report the same message, ask each person to identify the application branding and apply the matching client-side control. Changing a world setting or reinstalling the dedicated server is not an appropriate first response to a popup that is rendered outside the server process.
Platform limits: Windows, macOS and Linux
Discord documents Game Overlay as compatible with Windows only and says it does not function on macOS or Linux. The documented overlay guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Therefore, a Discord-looking message on macOS or Linux should not automatically be diagnosed as the Game Overlay.

The operating-system qualification prevents a common misdiagnosis. If a Linux or Mac player sees a Discord notification, disabling a Windows-only overlay feature cannot be treated as proof that the server is responsible. Identify the application window first, then use the controls available on that platform.
Choose the smallest setting that solves the problem
Disabling everything at once makes it difficult to tell which control worked and may remove features you still want. Use this decision guide.

Start with the row that matches the popup. A notification-only problem does not require removing the entire Discord overlay, while a full Discord panel will generally require the Overlay switch.

Troubleshooting when the popup remains
The Discord overlay is off, but a message still appears
Check whether the remaining message is an activity prompt. Revisit User Settings > Notifications, then inspect Registered Games and Activity Sharing. These controls are separate from the Overlay switch, so turning off one does not automatically change the others.
The popup appears only when joining a particular server
That timing does not prove the server generated it. Joining may simply be the moment Space Engineers becomes visible to Discord or Steam. Compare the exact wording with a local or different multiplayer session, and inspect the logo. If the same client notification appears elsewhere, treat it as a local application setting rather than a server setting.
Only one player sees it
Client-side variation is the expected explanation when the server is unchanged but only one person sees the popup. Have that player check the Discord and Steam controls on their own computer. A server administrator cannot change those settings remotely.

The player is on macOS or Linux
Because Discord’s documented Game Overlay is Windows-only, ask for the precise text and application branding instead of directing the player through Windows overlay instructions. A Discord activity notification or Steam message may still be involved, but the documented Windows overlay path is not a complete diagnosis for those platforms.
The wording is unclear
Record the message exactly, including its title, icon and buttons. Note whether it is a movable panel inside the game, a desktop toast, or a Steam overlay window. This information distinguishes the three control paths and avoids changing unrelated server settings.
Practical checklist for players
- Identify the logo and exact wording.
- For a Discord overlay panel, open Discord User Settings > Overlay and switch Enable Overlay off.
- For an activity prompt, check User Settings > Notifications.
- If needed, disable Space Engineers in Registered Games or turn off Activity Sharing.
- For Steam branding, use Steam’s client-side overlay and notification controls.
- Check the operating system: the documented Discord overlay applies to Windows 10 and 11, not macOS or Linux.
- If the popup continues, capture its text and re-check which application owns it before touching server configuration.
Documentation and label changes
Discord’s Game Overlay support article was updated on April 2, 2025, and its Activity Sharing FAQ was updated on September 22, 2026. Discord can move labels or group related controls as the desktop client changes. If a label is not in the same position, use the setting names Overlay, Enable Overlay, Notifications, Registered Games and Activity Sharing as search terms within User Settings. The underlying distinction remains the same: overlay rendering and activity notifications are separate client features.
