For Nintendo Switch players who want to play with friends on other systems, the strongest current picks are Rocket League, Fortnite, Minecraft Bedrock, and Fall Guys. They cover competitive matches, battle royale and other modes, creative sandbox play, and casual party rounds. Cross-play depends on the game: friends may need compatible editions, linked accounts, or an in-game party. Apex Legends is not a current Switch option: EA’s notice said its Switch version would stop being playable after August 4, 2026.
Which Switch cross-platform game fits your group?
| Game | Best for | How cross-play works | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocket League | Competitive matches and private games | Cross-platform matchmaking and private matches with friends on supported platforms | Cross-play is enabled by default; check the gameplay setting if it is not working. |
| Fortnite | Battle royale and a variety of modes | Epic Account linking supports cross-play in certain supported games | Link the correct Nintendo Account and Epic Account. Cross-play cannot currently be turned off on Switch, PC, or mobile. |
| Minecraft Bedrock | Creative building and sandbox play | Bedrock cross-play is listed for Switch, Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and mobile | Make sure everyone is using a compatible Bedrock version; Java players on PC, Mac, and Linux are a separate group. |
| Fall Guys | Casual party-style rounds | Add friends by Epic display name and form an in-game party; matchmaking can include other platforms | Enable cross-platform matchmaking if needed and choose an appropriate server region. |
These are supported recommendations, not an exhaustive catalog. Platform availability and service details can vary by region. The available information confirms these cross-play features, but does not establish every game’s current Switch 2 compatibility behavior.

Rocket League: best for competitive games with friends
Rocket League supports cross-platform matchmaking across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Cross-play is enabled by default, and private matches let friends on different supported platforms play together. That makes it a good fit both for joining public matches and arranging a game with a specific group.
If cross-platform play is not working, check the game’s gameplay setting before troubleshooting elsewhere. Private matches are documented as an option for playing with friends across platforms.

Fortnite: best for battle royale and varied modes
Fortnite supports cross-play on Switch through Epic’s account system. Nintendo says linking a Nintendo Account to an Epic Account enables cross-play features in certain supported games. Epic also says that progress and purchases can be shared across supported titles when they use the same linked Epic Account, with unused in-game currency excluded.
Cross-play is not optional on Switch, PC, or mobile according to Epic’s current support information: it cannot currently be turned off on those platforms. If friends cannot connect or shared progress is not appearing, first confirm that the intended Nintendo Account is linked to the intended Epic Account.
Take care before unlinking an account. Nintendo warns that only one Nintendo Account can be linked to an Epic Account, and unlinking does not make that Nintendo Account available to link to a different Epic Account.
Minecraft: check the edition before inviting friends
Minecraft is a strong cross-platform choice for building and sandbox sessions, provided everyone is on a compatible edition. The official platform information lists Bedrock cross-play among Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and mobile. It lists Java cross-play for Windows, Mac, and Linux instead.

In practice, “we both have Minecraft” is not enough to establish that two players can join the same world. A Switch player should check that friends are using a compatible Bedrock version rather than assuming Java and Bedrock players can play together. The official page also says online multiplayer on featured servers requires a separately sold subscription; this statement concerns those servers and does not establish a universal subscription rule for every game in this list.

Fall Guys lets players play with friends on supported platforms by adding one another through Epic display names and creating an in-game party. For matchmaking with players on other systems, Epic recommends enabling cross-platform matchmaking. If matchmaking is struggling, Epic also recommends choosing an appropriate server region.
The cross-platform feature is documented, but current Switch 2-specific compatibility behavior is not established here. Check the game’s current platform information if your group plans to play on Switch 2.
How to get cross-play working
- Confirm the game and edition. For Minecraft, check that the Switch player and friends are on compatible Bedrock versions. For other games, confirm that each person is using a supported platform version.
- Link accounts where the game requires them. In Fortnite and other supported Epic titles, make sure the Nintendo Account is linked to the correct Epic Account. Avoid unlinking casually: Nintendo says unlinking does not free the Nintendo Account to attach to another Epic Account.
- Use the game’s friend or party system. In Fall Guys, add friends using Epic display names and create a party. In Rocket League, use a private match to play with a specific cross-platform group.
- Check cross-play and matchmaking settings. Rocket League cross-play is on by default, while Fall Guys matchmaking may require cross-platform matchmaking to be enabled. Fortnite cross-play cannot currently be disabled on Switch.
- Check region and service status if matchmaking fails. For Fall Guys, Epic recommends selecting an appropriate server region. For games-as-a-service titles, current availability can change.
Why Apex Legends is not on this list
EA’s cross-play FAQ includes Switch among the platforms it supports, but its later notice said the Nintendo Switch version would no longer be playable after August 4, 2026. As of October 2026, that sunset date has passed, so Apex Legends should not be presented as a currently playable Switch cross-platform pick.
