The best crossplay game depends on what your group wants to play—and whether everyone’s exact platform and game edition are compatible. For a quick shortlist, try Fortnite for varied free-to-play experiences, Rocket League for short competitive matches, Minecraft Bedrock Edition for creative or survival play, Helldivers 2 for squad missions, or Split Fiction for a co-op story. Crossplay means players on different platforms can play together online; a game being released on several platforms does not, by itself, mean those platforms share multiplayer servers. Epic’s explainer describes crossplay among PC, consoles, and mobile devices.

Which crossplay game fits your group?
For free-to-play variety: Fortnite
Fortnite is a flexible starting point when friends want a free-to-play game with different kinds of experiences rather than one fixed match format. Epic includes it in its crossplay guide. Since Fortnite contains multiple experiences, make sure everyone is joining the same one and check its current availability on each player’s device.

Rocket League turns soccer into car-based competition, making it easy to arrange a quick match or a private game. Psyonix lists cross-platform play across Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, and says crossplay covers all online match types and private matches. Its support article explains that crossplay is enabled by default and can be disabled in settings: Rocket League cross-platform play.

For building and survival: Minecraft Bedrock
Minecraft is a strong fit for groups who want an ongoing world to build or explore together. The key is matching editions: console and mobile players generally need Bedrock, and PC players must launch Bedrock to join them. For cooperative action: Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is designed around four-player squads taking on missions together. Arrowhead’s support article, updated October 7, 2026, says PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players can cross-play. This is a good pick when the group values coordinated co-op over competing against one another; note that progress does not transfer between platforms. For a co-op story: Split Fiction
Split Fiction suits two friends who want a story-driven co-op game rather than an ongoing competitive title. Epic Games Store lists crossplay for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its Friends Pass can let the second player join without owning a separate copy; check the game’s current instructions and platform requirements before starting. For online football: Madden NFL 26
Madden NFL 26 supports crossplay in certain online multiplayer modes between PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. EA identifies the eligible modes in its Madden NFL 26 FAQ; crossplay for cloud Franchise is described there as a live beta, so do not assume every mode has the same support.
For casual party competition: Fall Guys
Fall Guys is another approachable option for a group looking for lighter competition. Epic lists it alongside Fortnite and Rocket League in its crossplay explainer. Check the current supported platform and mode details rather than assuming every device has identical access.
What to check before choosing a game
- Match every player’s platform. Confirm the exact consoles, PC storefronts, or mobile devices supported for the game and the mode you plan to play. A multi-platform release is not enough to establish crossplay.
- Check edition and version. This is especially important for Minecraft: Bedrock and Java are separate editions with separate multiplayer environments. Ask PC friends whether they use Bedrock or Java before anyone buys or launches the game.
- Verify mode coverage. Crossplay may be limited to selected modes. Madden NFL 26 is one example; Rocket League, by contrast, says its crossplay covers online match types and private matches.
- Separate crossplay from cross-progression. Crossplay lets players on different platforms play together. Cross-progression means progress carries between platforms, and it is not guaranteed just because crossplay works. Helldivers 2 does not transfer progress between platforms.
- Check online service requirements. Console online play can typically require a platform subscription, while PC online play requires an internet connection, according to Mojang’s edition guide. Requirements vary by game, platform, region, and service, so check the relevant platform and game support pages.
Minecraft crossplay: Bedrock and Java are not interchangeable
Minecraft’s edition split is one of the most common sources of crossplay confusion. Mojang lists Bedrock crossplay for Windows 10/11, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and mobile. Java crossplay is listed for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Java and Bedrock use different servers and cannot play together, even if both players call their game “Minecraft.” Consult Mojang’s cross-platform list and edition comparison for the current device and edition details.

Before purchasing, compare the edition shown for each player’s copy—not just the device name. On PC in particular, confirm that the Bedrock version is installed if the rest of the group is on console or mobile. Console online play can typically require a platform subscription; PC online play requires an internet connection, as Mojang notes in its edition guide.
Crossplay may not mean identical chat or account features
Rocket League illustrates why a group should check more than matchmaking. Psyonix says party text chat works across platforms, but typed messages sent during a match are visible only to players on the same platform; Quick Chat is visible to everyone. Its FAQ also says there is no cross-progression or item transfer between Rocket League and Rocket League Sideswipe. Read the cross-platform article and Rocket League FAQ if cross-platform communication or account items matter to your group.
How to settle on a game for mixed-platform friends
- Write down each person’s device and, for PC, the storefront or edition they use.
- Pick the preferred session type: short competitive rounds, a shared world, a co-op campaign, or a sports match.
- Check the official game support page for the exact platform combination and intended mode.
- Confirm whether everyone needs a copy, whether an invitation pass is available, and whether console online service requirements apply.
- Agree on expectations for voice or text chat and whether progress needs to carry across devices.
For compatibility, the game’s official support page and current in-game settings are more reliable than a general list, because crossplay availability and mode support can change.
