Cyberpunk 2077 is the broadest fit if you want first-person combat combined with character builds, an open world, hacking, implants, story choices, and stealth. Ghostrunner is the better alternative when your priority is rapid first-person melee in a cyberpunk setting rather than firearms and RPG progression. They are not interchangeable versions of the same design: choose according to the kind of combat loop you want.
The short answer
There is no useful universal ranking here because the two strongest recommendations serve different purposes. Cyberpunk 2077 treats combat as one part of a large action RPG. You play V, a mercenary in Night City, and can develop a character around weapons, ranged attacks, hacking, body-enhancing implants, or stealth. The open-world structure, jobs, exploration, relationships, and choices all sit around that combat system.

Ghostrunner is a much narrower and more concentrated proposition. PlayStation describes it as a hardcore first-person slasher set in a grim cyberpunk megastructure, with fast-paced, violent combat. It is the pick for someone who wants speed and melee pressure above all else. The available description does not establish Cyberpunk 2077-style firearm builds, hacking progression, or an open-world RPG structure, so it should not be bought as a direct substitute for those features.
| Game | What first-person combat emphasizes | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | Guns, ranged attacks, hacking, implants, stealth, and skill-based character development | Players who want combat variety inside an open-world RPG | Edition and platform support differ; PS4 no longer receives patches |
| Ghostrunner | Fast melee action in a first-person slasher format | Players who want a concentrated, movement-driven cyberpunk combat challenge | Do not expect the RPG systems or firearm-build breadth documented for Cyberpunk 2077 |
What counts as a first-person cyberpunk combat game?
“First-person” describes the camera and how you perceive the action, not the overall genre. A first-person cyberpunk game might be an open-world RPG, a linear action game, a shooter, or a melee-focused slasher. For this list, the decisive question is whether combat is experienced from that viewpoint and whether the game gives you a meaningful combat identity.

Cyberpunk 2077 earns its recommendation through breadth. Its official game description explicitly presents upgradeable weapons, hacking, implants, direct gunfights, ranged attacks, and stealth. Those options let you decide whether a mission should be approached as a firefight, a distance-based engagement, a technology-led encounter, or a quieter operation.
Ghostrunner earns its place through focus rather than breadth. The official PlayStation description calls it a first-person slasher and emphasizes fast-paced, violent combat. That wording points to a game where the immediacy of melee action is the central attraction, not one layer in a large role-playing system.
Cyberpunk 2077: the broadest first-person combat choice
Why it fits this audience
Cyberpunk 2077 is built for players who want combat decisions to connect to a larger character and world. The official game page describes V as a mercenary in Night City and lists skills, perks, upgradeable weapons, hacking, implants, ranged attacks, direct gunplay, and stealth. You are therefore choosing more than a weapon type: you are shaping how V solves problems and how combat fits into missions.
That breadth matters if you are asking, “What games are like Cyberpunk 2077 but focus more on combat?” The closest answer in this small, well-supported selection depends on what you mean by “more.” Ghostrunner gives you a more concentrated melee experience, but it does not reproduce Cyberpunk 2077’s documented combination of firearms, hacking, implants, stealth, open-world activity, and story progression.
The combat approaches documented by the official game page
- Gun combat: direct firearm encounters are part of the core proposition.
- Ranged attacks: the game supports fighting from distance rather than requiring every encounter to become close quarters.
- Hacking: technology-based approaches are listed alongside conventional weapons.
- Implants: body-enhancing cyberware contributes to the character-building layer.
- Stealth: avoiding a loud confrontation is an explicit option rather than an assumption that every mission is a firefight.
- Skills and perks: progression gives you a way to invest in the kind of combat you prefer.
These categories should be read as a menu of supported approaches, not a promise that every possible build is equally effective in every situation. The official description establishes the available pillars; it does not provide a universal ranking of them or a single best build.
How the RPG structure changes the feel of combat
Because Cyberpunk 2077 is also an open-world action-adventure, combat is surrounded by jobs, exploration, relationships, and decisions that shape the story and world. The PlayStation description specifically identifies V as a mercenary outlaw and says relationships and choices influence what happens. That structure suits players who want to leave a fight, pursue another activity, improve a build, and return with a different approach.
It also means the game is not a pure combat gauntlet. If you want every minute to be a fast melee test, a broader RPG can feel less concentrated. Conversely, if you want your combat style to matter across a continuing character journey, the open-world framework is a major advantage.

- THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
- Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
- Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
Who should choose it
- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want several combat routes rather than one signature weapon style.
- Choose it if hacking, implants, skills, and perks are as important to you as shooting.
- Choose it if you want combat embedded in an open world with jobs, exploration, relationships, and story choices.
- Choose it if you want to switch between loud and stealth-oriented approaches instead of committing to a slasher format.
Who may prefer the alternative
Cyberpunk 2077 may not be the best first purchase if your main requirement is immediate, high-speed melee action with little interest in RPG systems or open-world detours. In that case, Ghostrunner’s first-person slasher identity is more directly aligned with your stated priority.
Cyberpunk 2077 editions, platforms, and support
Ultimate Edition
The publisher describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as containing every gameplay update and all previously released content, including Phantom Liberty. Its listed platform choices are PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with physical and digital options shown by the publisher.
That is an edition description, not a guarantee that every platform receives identical support. Store pages can vary by territory and by the specific product listing. Before checkout, confirm the platform, included expansion, language options, and whether the copy is physical or digital.
The PlayStation 4 caveat
The official PlayStation page says the PS4 version received its last patch on November 8, 2022 and is no longer supported. It also says PS5 is required for patches released after that date and for Phantom Liberty on PlayStation. This is the most important platform qualification in the recommendation: a PS4 listing does not mean the PS4 edition receives the same future updates or expansion access as PS5.
If you are buying on PlayStation, verify that the store page identifies the PS5 version when you want later patches or Phantom Liberty. Do not assume that owning a PS4 copy automatically supplies every PS5 entitlement; read the current listing and upgrade terms for your territory.
Other listed platforms
The publisher’s Ultimate Edition page lists PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Phantom Liberty launch announcement, dated September 25, 2023, states availability on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and GeForce Now. That announcement is a dated availability statement, so use the live store listing to confirm what can be purchased now and what content is included on your device.
Phantom Liberty: when the expansion matters to your choice
Phantom Liberty is relevant because the publisher presents Ultimate Edition as including it, while the PlayStation support note limits the expansion to PS5 rather than PS4. CD PROJEKT RED announced the expansion on September 25, 2023, describing it as a spy thriller that takes V to Dogtown.

Ghostrunner: the fast first-person melee alternative
What the official description establishes
PlayStation describes Ghostrunner as a hardcore first-person slasher set in a grim cyberpunk megastructure. It emphasizes fast-paced, violent combat. For a reader searching for cyberpunk games with first-person combat, that is a clear and useful distinction: the game’s identity is built around rapid melee action viewed from the first-person perspective.
Why its combat priority is different
Ghostrunner is the recommendation when you want the combat loop itself to dominate your attention. The cited description supports a slasher-oriented experience, not the broad RPG toolbox documented for Cyberpunk 2077. It therefore makes sense for players who would rather practice timing, movement, and aggressive close-range encounters than manage a mercenary build across an open world.
Do not buy it expecting a replacement for Cyberpunk 2077’s guns, hacking, implants, stealth options, or story-choice structure. Those features are established for Cyberpunk 2077; they are not established by the Ghostrunner description used here.
Who should choose Ghostrunner
- Choose Ghostrunner when fast first-person melee is your non-negotiable requirement.
- Choose it when a cyberpunk megastructure and slasher format appeal more than an open-world RPG.
- Choose it when you want a focused action game rather than a long list of character, story, and exploration systems.
Who should stay with Cyberpunk 2077
Stay with Cyberpunk 2077 if you want firearms, hacking, cybernetic implants, ranged options, stealth, skills, perks, and an open-world mercenary story in one package. Ghostrunner’s strength is specialization; Cyberpunk 2077’s is the number of supported approaches.
Cyberpunk 2077 versus Ghostrunner
| Decision axis | Cyberpunk 2077 | Ghostrunner |
|---|---|---|
| Primary combat identity | Multi-route RPG combat using guns, ranged attacks, hacking, implants, and stealth | Fast first-person slasher combat focused on melee action |
| Game structure | Open-world action RPG with jobs, exploration, relationships, and choices | Cyberpunk action/slasher; the cited description does not establish a comparable open-world RPG structure |
| Character progression | Skills, perks, weapon upgrades, and implants are documented | Not stated in the cited description |
| Best reason to buy | You want combat variety inside a continuing mercenary story | You want concentrated, high-speed first-person melee |
| Biggest mismatch for some players | It is not solely a combat challenge; open-world and story systems take time | It is not documented as a firearm-and-hacking RPG equivalent |
| Expansion and support caveat | Phantom Liberty and later PlayStation patches require PS5, not PS4 | Confirm the current platform listing separately |
Choose by the kind of combat you want
If you want the most build variety
Pick Cyberpunk 2077. Its official description names weapons, hacking, implants, ranged combat, stealth, skills, and perks. That is the strongest documented spread of combat tools in this comparison.

Pick Ghostrunner. The first-person slasher label and fast-paced combat description align directly with that requirement.
If you want a world to explore between fights

If you want a cyberpunk story with meaningful decisions
Pick Cyberpunk 2077. The PlayStation description says relationships and choices shape the story and world, while the Ghostrunner material cited here establishes setting and combat but not a comparable choice-driven RPG structure.

- Identify your combat priority. Decide whether you want firearms and build variety or fast melee slashing. This choice determines the game more reliably than the shared cyberpunk setting.
- Check the exact platform. Cyberpunk 2077 has separate PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch 2 listings. Edition names can conceal meaningful support differences.
- On PlayStation, choose PS5 for current support. The official page dates the final PS4 patch to November 8, 2022 and says later patches and Phantom Liberty require PS5.
- Verify the edition contents. The publisher says Ultimate Edition includes all gameplay updates and previously released content, including Phantom Liberty. Confirm that the store listing in your territory says the same.
- Check expansion access. Phantom Liberty’s 2023 announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC availability. Confirm the live listing rather than relying only on an old announcement.
- Decide whether physical extras matter. The publisher says the Day 1 physical edition included a World Compendium, map, postcards, stickers, and other items. That does not establish that those extras are still available in a current standalone package.
- Review the store’s current price and stock. Prices, inventory, and regional bundles change, and no fixed current price is established here.
PlayStation audio and controller features
PlayStation says compatible 3D audio works through a compatible headset or TV speakers. A headset is therefore optional, not a requirement for the advertised audio feature. The same page describes DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for the PS5 version.
If you already have a compatible headset, it can be a sensible way to use 3D audio, but do not add one to your budget solely because you believe it is mandatory. Check the console, television, and game settings for the exact output options available to your setup.

Which cyberpunk games have first-person combat?
From the games covered here, Cyberpunk 2077 and Ghostrunner both meet that requirement, but in different ways. Cyberpunk 2077 offers a broad first-person RPG combat toolkit; Ghostrunner is explicitly presented as a first-person slasher centered on fast melee action.

What game is like Cyberpunk 2077 but focuses more on combat?
Ghostrunner is the clearest alternative in this article if “more combat” means a tighter, faster melee loop. It is not a like-for-like RPG replacement because the cited material does not establish Cyberpunk 2077’s guns, hacking, implants, stealth, or open-world progression for it.
Is Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 still supported?
No. The official PlayStation page says the PS4 version’s last patch was November 8, 2022 and that it is no longer supported. PS5 is required for patches released after that date and for Phantom Liberty on PlayStation.
Does Ultimate Edition include Phantom Liberty?
The publisher describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as including every gameplay update and all previously released content, including Phantom Liberty. Confirm the exact contents on the store page for your platform and territory before buying.

Do I need a gaming headset for PlayStation 3D audio?
No. PlayStation says 3D audio can work through a compatible headset or TV speakers. A headset is optional.
Final recommendation
Start with Cyberpunk 2077 if you want the most complete first-person cyberpunk combat package: guns, ranged attacks, hacking, implants, stealth, skills, perks, and an open-world RPG context. On PlayStation, favor PS5 when you want post-November-2022 patches or Phantom Liberty, and verify the Ultimate Edition listing before checkout.
Choose Ghostrunner instead when your defining requirement is fast first-person melee in a cyberpunk megastructure. Its value is concentration and speed, not the broad firearm-and-progression toolbox that makes Cyberpunk 2077 the better all-round recommendation.
