There is no official or evidence-based universal ranking of D&D cleric subclasses. Under the 2024 Player’s Handbook rules, the four choices are Life, Light, Trickery, and War; the best fit depends on whether you want healing, radiant offense, deception, or weapon-forward combat. This guide ranks them by those goals rather than claiming one wins for every table.
Which rules and subclasses does this ranking cover?
This ranking focuses on the four cleric domains in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. D&D Beyond says the 2024 book replaces the corresponding 2014 Player’s Handbook rules when used, subject to stated exceptions. The 2024 cleric gains a subclass at level 3, not level 1. D&D Beyond’s cleric comparison explains the changes, while its 2024 Player’s Handbook overview lists the book’s four cleric options.
The 2014 Knowledge, Nature, and Tempest domains do not appear in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, but remain usable from 2014 rules material. D&D Beyond’s March 2, 2026 editor’s note labels the updated rules “5.5e” and 2014 content “5e” on its site; it says both versions remain supported and compatible. Ask your DM which rules and content your campaign allows before choosing a subclass.
The ranking below is an editorial comparison of the 2024 domains’ roles and reported features, not an official tier list or a result of playtesting. The available sources do not establish comparative win rates or a universal power order.

Best cleric domains by playstyle

1. Life Domain: best for healing and support
Choose Life if your main aim is to restore hit points and help the party endure. The 2024 version adds Aid to its domain spells. D&D Beyond’s comparison says Disciple of Life is limited to the turn on which the spell is cast, while Preserve Life can affect Undead and Constructs. These details matter when planning how the domain’s healing features interact with your spells and targets.
2. Light Domain: best for radiant and fire offense
Light suits players who want damage-focused magic without giving up protective tools. Its 2024 domain spell list adds See Invisibility. Warding Flare protects allies from the outset, and Improved Warding Flare adds temporary hit points to the target of the triggering attack and recovers uses after a Short Rest. At higher levels, Corona of Light makes it harder for enemies to resist Radiance of the Dawn and spells that deal Radiant or Fire damage.

3. Trickery Domain: best for deception and tactical utility
Trickery is the most natural fit for players who enjoy misdirection, movement, and illusion tactics. Blessing of the Trickster can target the cleric and lasts until a Long Rest or until it is used again. Invoke Duplicity is a Bonus Action and no longer requires Concentration. The revised high-level illusion grants Advantage on attacks near it and can heal when it ends. Its domain spell list also changed in 2024.
4. War Domain: best for weapon-forward combat
War fits a cleric who wants more ways to participate in weapon combat and support the party in a fight. War Priest can now make an Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action and recharges after either a Short or Long Rest. War God’s Blessing can cast Shield of Faith or Spiritual Weapon without a spell slot and without Concentration for up to one minute. Its domain spell list also changed.

How should you choose your cleric domain?
- Confirm the rules version. Check whether your campaign uses the 2024 Player’s Handbook rules, 2014 rules, or a permitted mix of content.
- Pick the role you want to play. Choose Life for healing support, Light for radiant and fire offense with protection, Trickery for illusion tactics, or War for weapon-oriented combat.
- Consider the actual campaign. A domain’s appeal depends on which challenges and party needs come up at your table; no source here establishes a universal best choice across campaigns.
- Check your character’s other options. Under the 2024 rules, clerics choose Divine Order: Protector grants Martial weapon proficiency and Heavy armor training, while Thaumaturge grants an extra cantrip and a Wisdom-based bonus to Arcana or Religion checks. Do not choose a domain solely for armor or weapon proficiencies.
- Make the subclass choice at the right level. The 2024 cleric selects a subclass at level 3. For the core rules and character options, see the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
Are 2014 cleric domains compatible with the 2024 rules?
D&D Beyond says the 2024 rules revisions are designed to be compatible with fifth-edition material, and that Knowledge, Nature, and Tempest remain usable from 2014. That is not the same as those domains being printed in the 2024 Player’s Handbook: they are not among its four cleric subclasses. Confirm with your DM which legacy options are permitted and how your table handles any rules interactions between editions.

The list orders domains by how directly their described features serve the playstyles named in the table. It is not a claim that Life is stronger than Light, or that War is weaker than Trickery in every campaign. The official comparison describes feature and spell-list changes, but does not publish a statistical performance study comparing the four subclasses. Treat the ranking as a starting point for matching a character concept to your table, not a verdict on balance.
