How to check compatibility before buying
- Find the console model number. Check the model number printed on the console; use the full identifier, not just the console’s name or the fact that it is a Digital Edition.
- Match it to PlayStation’s setup guidance. The setup instructions list CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups. The official product listing identifies compatible CFI-2000/CFI-2100 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. Check your regional PlayStation pages for the precise model and revision.
- Confirm the listing is the CFI-ZDD1. Sony’s attachable drive is the documented accessory for compatible models. Do not assume a generic USB optical drive is compatible.
- Plan for setup pairing. PlayStation says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during setup.
What discs can the CFI-ZDD1 play?
PlayStation describes the drive as supporting PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray, as well as movie playback from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD. Its media support information also lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE, along with DVD formats. Why a USB disc drive is not the same thing
PS5 USB extended storage is for storing game and app data; PlayStation says PS5 games stored there cannot be played directly from that storage. It does not provide optical disc playback. The official sources cited here document the CFI-ZDD1 add-on, not a generic USB optical drive as a substitute for it.

There is no meaningful set of officially documented external-drive alternatives to rank in the available PlayStation information. The CFI-ZDD1 is the supported add-on path described for compatible disc-free consoles, so a ranked list of competing USB drives would imply compatibility that PlayStation has not established. Choose it only after verifying your model number and regional compatibility listing.
