Squadron 42 is Cloud Imperium Games’ single-player campaign associated with Star Citizen. It is still in development and is not currently available to download or play, according to Roberts Space Industries (RSI). A pledge that includes Squadron 42 is intended to provide access after development, testing, and release—not immediate access.
What is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign connected to Star Citizen. RSI’s onboarding checklist identifies it as a campaign and distinguishes it from Star Citizen game packages, which generally bundle the online game with a ship and other items.

Can you play Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI’s support article, updated February 4, 2026, says Squadron 42 is in development and unavailable to download. Its April 16, 2026 onboarding checklist likewise describes the campaign as still in development and not yet available.

RSI says that people whose accounts own a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it once development is complete, the game has been tested, and it is released. That describes future access, not a way to play the campaign today. RSI’s download-status article and onboarding checklist provide the current status.
Do you need Star Citizen to play it?
RSI identifies Squadron 42 as a separate single-player campaign rather than the Star Citizen online game. Its support guidance says an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download the campaign after release. The reviewed official pages do not establish whether a separate Star Citizen game package will be required to play it, so do not assume that owning or playing Star Citizen is a prerequisite.
