Mobile Spin is useful against projectile-heavy enemies; a Survival upgrade can help if your stamina pool or survivability is the issue. Once the basics feel comfortable, invest in one staff stance—Smash is a sensible aggressive default, while Pillar and Thrust suit different matchups and preferences.
What should you spend Sparks on first?
Start with Foundation skills that support stamina and dodging. Stamina fuels attacks as well as evasions, so exhausting the bar with a long combo can leave you unable to respond to the next attack. Prioritize the stamina options that make it easier to keep a dodge available rather than following a supposedly mandatory node order: the cited guides do not establish one universal sequence.
Mike Nelson, writing for Xbox Wire about his Chapter 1 experience, recommends focusing on base stats before experimenting with advanced skills. That is a practical early-game approach, not a developer-issued balance ranking. Read Xbox Wire’s Chapter 1 advice.
Which early skills are worth unlocking?
Stamina and dodge support
Choose Foundation or Survival upgrades that improve stamina comfort and help you preserve enough energy to evade. Epic Games Store’s guide specifically recommends Rampant Vigor, a Survival perk that raises maximum stamina. It is a useful candidate if stamina capacity is limiting you, but it is not automatically the best first Spark for every player.

Mobile Spin against projectiles
Mobile Spin lets you deflect incoming projectiles while moving toward ranged enemies. Consider it early if arrows or other ranged attacks are interrupting your approach. If projectile pressure is not causing trouble, it can wait while you improve stamina or another weakness.
Health when survival is the problem
Invest in health if you are being defeated despite managing stamina and dodges reasonably well. Xbox Wire’s Chapter 1 advice suggests at least three points each in Health and Stamina; treat that as the author’s recommendation from his playthrough, not a required threshold or optimal build formula.

Should you upgrade Smash Stance early?
Smash is a reasonable early stance for players who want an aggressive approach. Xbox Wire’s author recommends moving into Smash after Foundation investment, based on his own Chapter 1 experience. It is a sensible default, but the available guides do not establish that Smash deals more damage or is universally better than the alternatives.
Rather than spread Sparks across every stance, pick one that fits how you want to handle attacks and openings:

These are descriptions of different tools, not a measured comparison of damage or overall effectiveness. Choose based on the attacks you are struggling with and the timing you prefer.
How should you use Focus and Immobilize?
Build Focus through controlled attacks, then spend it during a confirmed opening rather than treating a charged attack as automatic. Keep enough stamina to dodge afterward; an opening is less useful if your attack leaves you unable to respond.
Immobilize can create time to attack or heal, but spells use mana and have cooldowns. Plan a cast around a moment when you can make use of the pause instead of spending it as soon as it becomes available. Epic Games Store’s guide describes Immobilize as a way to freeze an enemy for a punish window, while the updated beginner guide advises deliberate spell use.

Before spending Sparks differently, identify what is causing the repeated failure. The same boss can expose a resource problem, a timing problem, or a costly route back—not necessarily a bad skill choice.

- You run out of stamina: shorten attack strings and prioritize stamina support so you can keep a dodge available.
- You are hit by ranged attacks while closing in: consider Mobile Spin.
- You cannot avoid ground attacks: consider whether Pillar’s ability to rise above them suits the matchup.
- You have trouble finding safe counterattacks: Thrust’s spacing and counter-oriented style may fit your approach better.
- You die despite managing resources: consider health investment, then focus on learning the enemy’s timing.
- You spend mana before a useful opening: save Immobilize for a planned punish or healing window.
- The return route makes attempts costly: account for that route when deciding whether to continue or reassess.
Epic’s guide says Sparks can be refunded, which makes experimentation possible. Check the refund wording and controls in your game on your platform before relying on a particular interface path. The updated beginner guide, last updated November 29, 2025, describes its coverage as launch plus then-current PC and console patches and advises checking patch-sensitive details against the version you play.
