For Elden Ring version 1.16, Windows Central’s August 2025 guide places spells such as Carian Slicer, Rock Sling, Comet Azur, Golden Vow and Pest-Thread Spears among its top choices. The right pick still depends on your stats, whether you own Shadow of the Erdtree, the target, and whether you are playing PvE or PvP. This is a version-specific selection, not a claim about the current meta in 2026.
How to read these recommendations
Windows Central’s guide, last updated August 4, 2025, ranks sorceries and incantations from S to F based on efficiency, FP cost, ease of use and PvP viability. Its S-tier examples are the guide author’s judgments, not universal results for every build or encounter. A lower-ranked spell may still be the better tool for a particular enemy, playstyle or stat spread. The guide’s list includes spells from both the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, so check DLC availability before planning around one.
The version label matters. Bandai Namco’s official version 1.16 notes, dated October 17, 2024, identify App Ver. and Regulation Ver. 1.16 for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S and Steam. Those notes list bug and performance fixes, not sorcery or incantation balance changes. The Steam announcements page also lists a version 1.16.1 bug-fix update dated August 21, 2025 and displays spell balance adjustments in another announcement. That does not establish which balance version is latest as of October 8, 2026, so treat these picks as a 2025/1.16 snapshot rather than a current-meta ranking.
Bandai Namco Europe’s version 1.16 notes state: “Online play requires the player to apply this update.” The notes also advise console players to log in to download regulation files.

Top sorceries for version 1.16
Windows Central’s S-tier sorcery examples include Impenetrable Thorns, Fleeting Microcosm, Glintstone Nail, Comet, Carian Slicer, Rock Sling, Comet Azur, Terra Magica and Ranni’s Dark Moon. The following standouts illustrate different strengths rather than one universal ranking.
Rock Sling: physical damage and stance pressure
Rock Sling launches three boulders and deals physical damage, making it a useful option when a target resists magic. The guide highlights its ability to damage enemy and boss stance, creating chances to stagger and land critical attacks. It is found in an underground cellar in Street of Sages Ruins in Caelid.
Comet Azur: a high-investment beam with setup demands
Comet Azur requires 60 Intelligence and 40 FP. Its powerful beam can inflict substantial health and stance damage, but realizing that potential depends on a suitable setup and enough time to cast safely. It is a late-game choice, found near Primeval Sorcerer Azur in Mt. Gelmir.

Terra Magica: a stationary sorcery-damage boost
Terra Magica requires 20 Intelligence and costs 20 FP. It creates an area that boosts allied sorcery damage by 22.5%, according to Windows Central’s 2025 guide, which notes that the effect was reduced from 35% in patch 1.12. Because the area is stationary, it suits situations where you can hold position, such as some ranged boss encounters or PvP setups. Find it after the Academy Crystal Cave route.
Ranni’s Dark Moon: costly damage and setup value
Requiring 68 Intelligence and costing 57 FP, Ranni’s Dark Moon is a demanding spell to equip and cast. The guide notes that it builds Frostbite and lowers the target’s resistance to magic damage, offering status and setup value alongside damage. It is found at Chelona’s Rise on the Moonlight Altar plateau after unlocking the tower’s seal.
Top incantations for version 1.16
The guide’s S-tier examples include Fire Serpent, Pest-Thread Spears, Knight’s Lightning Spear, Multilayered Ring of Light, Heal From Afar, Golden Vow, Flame Grant Me Strength, Giantsflame Take Thee, Black Flame, Black Blade and several Dragon Communion breaths. These picks serve different jobs, from large-target damage to support and repeatable ranged attacks.

Pest-Thread Spears: a large-target option with mobility
Pest-Thread Spears requires 26 Faith and costs 28 FP. The guide recommends it against large targets, where it can be cast quickly, and notes that it can be used while riding Torrent. Find it in the western Ancient Ruins of Rauh; it is a Shadow of the Erdtree spell.
Knight’s Lightning Spear: layered projectiles for PvE
This incantation requires 36 Faith and costs 29 FP. Its main projectile is followed by four smaller projectiles normally, or six when charged, according to the guide. That layered attack is why the guide emphasizes its reliable PvE hits. It is found in Scorpion River Catacombs and is part of Shadow of the Erdtree.
Fire Serpent: repeatable fire pressure
Fire Serpent is presented as a relatively low-cost, repeatable PvE fire option found in Shadow Keep. The guide cautions that its attack is easier for opponents to anticipate in PvP, so its strengths are more apparent against enemies than human players.

Heal From Afar: ranged support
Heal From Afar lets you heal allies and Spirit Ashes from range. The guide also notes that aiming at the ground lets you heal yourself. That makes it a support-focused choice for situations where keeping distance or helping a co-op partner matters.

Before committing a memory slot or spending time on a spell, check how it fits the character and the fight. A top-tier ranking cannot compensate for unmet stat requirements, an FP pool too small for repeated casts or an unsafe casting window.
- Check Intelligence or Faith: Confirm that the spell’s requirement fits your build now, not only after a planned respec or level increase.
- Budget FP: Compare the casting cost with your available FP and how often you expect to cast during the encounter.
- Match damage and utility to the target: Consider damage type, Frostbite, stance pressure, resistance reduction or healing—not damage alone.
- Account for safety and movement: A long or stationary cast is less attractive when the enemy leaves little room to stand still. Mobility can matter more than theoretical damage.
- Pick for the mode: A spell that is consistent against PvE enemies may be easier for a PvP opponent to anticipate. Co-op can make support spells more valuable.
- Check DLC ownership: Pest-Thread Spears, Knight’s Lightning Spear and Fire Serpent are tied to Shadow of the Erdtree; do not build a plan around them if you cannot access the expansion.
What version 1.16 does—and does not—tell you
Bandai Namco’s 1.16 notes are useful for identifying the app and regulation version and confirming the update requirement for online play. They do not document spell balance changes. Steam’s announcements later list 1.16.1 as a bug-fix update dated August 21, 2025, while also showing spell adjustments—including Founding Rain of Stars, Carian Retaliation, Meteorite, Meteorite of Astel, Gravitational Missile, Feather of the Divine Bird, O, Flame! and Rain of Fire—in another announcement.
