The best emulator for a Chromebook depends more on the console, Chromebook model, CPU architecture, and available installation route than on the Chromebook brand itself. For most users, start with the Android version from Google Play: PPSSPP for PSP, Dolphin for GameCube and Wii on powerful hardware, DuckStation for PS1 when available, and RetroArch or Lemuroid for older systems. Use Linux as a fallback or for specialist applications such as mGBA, but do not assume Linux automatically provides full graphics acceleration.

This guide covers video-game console emulators—not the Android Studio virtual device—and explains what your Chromebook can realistically run, how to install an emulator safely, and what to do when an app is unavailable or performs poorly.

Quick recommendations

System or goal Best first choice Why Main qualification
NES, SNES, Genesis, arcade and older handhelds RetroArch or Lemuroid Broad coverage from one Android-friendly interface RetroArch requires more configuration; Lemuroid availability should be checked on your device
Game Boy Advance mGBA or RetroArch’s mGBA core Focused, accurate GBA emulation Standalone mGBA has no official Android/iOS port
PlayStation 1 DuckStation Specialist PS1 features and configuration Check current official Android availability and BIOS requirements
PlayStation Portable PPSSPP Official Android and Linux releases with explicit Chromebook support Performance still varies by game and Chromebook
GameCube and Wii Dolphin The leading specialist option with official Android and Linux builds Best reserved for relatively powerful Chromebooks and a physical controller
Nintendo DS A current, officially distributed DS emulator supported by your device Touchscreens can suit DS dual-screen controls Verify the specific app, architecture, controls and maintenance status
3DS, PS2, Wii U, Switch and newer systems Usually do not use a Chromebook as the primary solution Compatibility and performance are highly hardware- and game-dependent A dedicated handheld, Windows/Linux PC or streaming setup may be better

For the easiest experience, install an Android emulator from the Google Play Store on a supported Chromebook. If you want one configurable library, choose RetroArch. If you want the clearest PSP recommendation, choose PPSSPP. For GameCube or Wii, choose Dolphin only after checking your hardware expectations.

What “emulator for Chromebook” actually means

ChromeOS can run console emulators through several different routes:

#1 Best Overall
Bluetooth Mobile Game Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 & iOS & Android & Tablets, Wireless Gamepad Grip with Hall Effect Trigger Joystick, Ergonomic Phone Controller for iPhone, iPad Pro, Samsung

  • Supports controllers up to 11 inch: Scalable design supports most tablets such as 11 inch iPad Pro (M5), 11 inch iPad Air (M3), iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), 11 inch iPad Pro (M4), 11 inch iPad Pro 4/3/2/1, for Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon, Huawei tablets etc. (Not compatible with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 13-inch iPad Air)
  1. Android apps: installed from Google Play and generally the best starting point.
  2. Linux applications: installed inside the ChromeOS Linux development environment.
  3. Browser-based emulators: useful in limited cases, but dependent on the site and browser support.
  4. Sideloaded APKs: possible on some devices, but less convenient and riskier unless the emulator project explicitly supplies the APK.
  5. Remote or streamed emulation: the game runs on another computer or service rather than natively on the Chromebook.

This article concerns emulation of consoles and handhelds. It does not refer to the Android Emulator used by Android Studio for app development. Google documents that development emulator separately from ordinary Android-app support on ChromeOS; those are different workloads.

Check your Chromebook before installing anything

1. Confirm Google Play support

Open the Launcher and look for Play Store. Supported Chromebooks can install Android apps through Google Play, but support varies by model, region, ChromeOS version, administrator policy and app architecture. Update ChromeOS before troubleshooting an apparently missing app.

2. Check whether Linux is available

Open Settings → Developers → Linux development environment. If the option is missing, the Chromebook may not support Linux, or a school or workplace administrator may have disabled it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Identify the Linux CPU architecture

Open Terminal and run:

uname -m

Common results are:

  • x86_64 — 64-bit Intel or AMD.
  • aarch64 — 64-bit ARM.
  • armv7l — 32-bit ARM, which has more restricted software compatibility.

Architecture matters twice: Linux builds must match the Linux architecture, and Android apps must include a compatible Android ABI or run through ChromeOS translation. Google describes native x86/x86_64 support as the broadest option for Intel and AMD Chromebooks. ARM translation can reduce speed and battery life, and some devices cannot translate arm64 applications at all.

Use Google’s ChromeOS Android app compatibility guidance when an app will not install. Do not treat the processor’s marketing name alone as a performance guarantee.

4. Set realistic hardware expectations

NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy and many other older systems are relatively light workloads. PSP, GameCube, Wii and newer systems demand much more from the CPU, graphics hardware, memory, cooling and software graphics path.

There is no universal RAM or processor threshold that predicts performance across all Chromebooks and games. A game may install, boot and still be unpleasant to play because of stutter, incorrect graphics, thermal throttling or impractical controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check whether the Chromebook is managed

School and enterprise devices may block Google Play, Linux, APK installation, external storage, developer settings or USB peripherals. Ask the administrator for supported options rather than attempting to bypass management controls.

Best Android emulators for Chromebook

PPSSPP — best PSP emulator

PPSSPP is the clearest all-purpose recommendation for PSP emulation on Chromebook. It has an official Android version, official Linux distribution options, and the project’s FAQ explicitly discusses running the Android version on Chromebooks. The official download page provides current Android and Linux routes; version numbers and development builds change, so use the project’s page rather than relying on an old APK or article.

  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.

PPSSPP emulates PlayStation Portable software. It does not emulate PS1, PS2 or later PlayStation systems. The free version is functional for ordinary use; PPSSPP Gold is an optional support purchase, not a requirement for basic PSP emulation.

Recommended setup:

  1. Open Google Play and search for the official PPSSPP listing.
  2. Install the free version and launch it.
  3. Grant file access when prompted.
  4. Create a clearly named folder for legally obtained PSP game files in a location visible to Android apps.
  5. Use PPSSPP’s file browser to select that folder.
  6. Pair a Bluetooth or USB controller if you do not want touchscreen controls.
  7. Start with the default graphics settings.
  8. Raise internal resolution only after a game is stable.
  9. If a game stutters, lower the rendering resolution, try another available graphics backend, or use frameskip cautiously.

Back up saves before changing installations or testing development builds. See the PPSSPP FAQ, introduction and supported software notes, and official downloads.

Dolphin — best GameCube and Wii emulator

Dolphin is the strongest specialist choice for GameCube and Wii. The project offers official Android and Linux downloads, including Linux x86_64 and aarch64 builds.

That availability does not mean every Chromebook can play GameCube or Wii games well. Performance varies substantially with the game, CPU, GPU, graphics backend, resolution, cooling and thermal limits. Wii motion controls are also awkward on a conventional Chromebook, even when the emulator itself runs.

Prefer the Android build when it is available and functional. The Linux environment has documented hardware-acceleration limitations, which can make Linux-based 3D emulation disappointing. Start at native or low internal resolution, disable enhancements, and use a physical controller. Dolphin is best described as the best emulator for powerful Chromebooks, not the best emulator for every Chromebook. Download it from the official Dolphin site.

RetroArch — best configurable multi-system front end

RetroArch is a strong choice for readers who want one library, shared controller mappings, playlists, shaders and save-state features across many older systems. It is not one emulator. It is a front end that loads separate libretro cores, and each core can have different settings, BIOS needs and compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction explains both its flexibility and its learning curve. You may need to install the appropriate core, organize folders, supply a required BIOS file, scan a directory and adjust per-core settings. Android is usually the simpler route on Chromebook, while Linux can be useful when the official distribution and your hardware cooperate.

RetroArch is a good fit for experienced users and broad libraries. It is not automatically the easiest choice for someone who wants to install one app and immediately play. Use the official RetroArch project, not a third-party “preconfigured ROM” package.

Lemuroid — simplest multi-system Android alternative

Lemuroid is a more approachable Android-oriented alternative for users who want a library-style experience with less visible configuration than RetroArch. It is a sensible candidate for older consoles and handhelds.

The trade-off is reduced control compared with RetroArch or specialist emulators. Coverage, core behavior and Google Play availability should be checked on the specific Chromebook before publication or installation. Do not assume Lemuroid supports every system or behaves identically to RetroArch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DuckStation — best PS1 specialist when available

DuckStation is the preferred type of choice for PlayStation 1: a focused emulator with PS1-specific enhancements and configuration rather than a general-purpose front end. Availability, architecture support and current distribution can vary, so verify the official project or Google Play listing for your device before installing.

PS1 games may also require a BIOS file, depending on the title and emulator setup. Obtain BIOS files and game dumps from hardware and software you legally own, subject to the law where you live. Avoid random “DuckStation” APKs from mirror sites.

Other Android choices: verify before recommending

Nintendo DS can be a good match for a touchscreen Chromebook, but dual-screen layouts, stylus input, save handling and controller mapping need practical testing. Choose a currently maintained emulator from an official distribution channel rather than a random search result.

Nintendo 3DS emulation is considerably more demanding. An app that installs may still have poor graphics, sound, controls or game compatibility. Do not present DS or 3DS software as a universal Chromebook recommendation without testing the specific device and release.

Best Linux emulators for Chromebook

Linux is valuable when a Chromebook lacks Google Play or when a specialist emulator has a better-maintained Linux release. It is not a universal replacement for Android. Google’s current ChromeOS Linux documentation lists hardware acceleration as unsupported in the Linux environment and states that Android emulators are not supported there. That limitation is particularly important for demanding 3D console emulation.

PPSSPP through Linux

PPSSPP provides official Linux Flatpak and AppImage paths in addition to Android. Linux may be useful on a Play-Store-free Chromebook, but compare its performance with the Android route when both are available. Choose the build matching your architecture and follow PPSSPP’s current installation instructions.

Dolphin through Linux

Dolphin offers official Linux Flatpak builds for x86_64 and aarch64. The build may launch successfully while still performing poorly because of container graphics behavior or device limitations. Treat Linux Dolphin as an experiment for capable hardware, not a guarantee of playable Wii or GameCube performance.

mGBA — best GBA specialist through Linux

mGBA is a focused Game Boy Advance emulator with official Linux support. Its FAQ states that there is no official standalone Android or iOS port; on Android-supported platforms, the practical alternative is the mGBA libretro core through RetroArch.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for iPhone, Apple, Android & Xbox Cloud Gaming, Bluetooth Gamepad with Hall Effect Joysticks, 2 Pro Back Buttons, Officially Licensed (Black)
  • Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
  • Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
  • Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
  • Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.

That makes mGBA excellent for Linux users and accuracy-focused readers, but less convenient than a Play Store-first solution. See the official mGBA FAQ for its current platform guidance.

RetroArch through Linux

Linux RetroArch can provide a desktop-style library and configuration environment, but package and core installation are more involved than Android installation. Because Linux graphics behavior on ChromeOS is device-dependent, prefer Android for demanding systems when a reliable Android build exists.

Android-first installation path

  1. Update ChromeOS.
  2. Open the Launcher and start Google Play Store.
  3. Search for the emulator by its official name.
  4. Install only the official listing or a release linked by the project.
  5. Launch the emulator and grant file access through its file picker.
  6. Create a dedicated, clearly labeled game directory in the Files app.
  7. Keep legally obtained game files and save backups organized separately.
  8. Connect a Bluetooth or USB controller and configure it inside the emulator.
  9. Test one game before importing a large library.
  10. Leave graphics at default settings until the game is stable.

Android and Linux applications may not see identical folders. If the emulator cannot find a file, use its in-app file picker and grant access to the folder explicitly rather than assuming that every ChromeOS directory is exposed automatically.

Linux installation path

  1. Open Settings → Developers.
  2. Enable Linux development environment, if offered.
  3. Open Terminal.
  4. Update the Linux container:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  1. Restart if ChromeOS or the package manager requests it.
  2. Install an official Flatpak, AppImage or package according to the emulator’s documentation.
  3. Store Linux files under Linux files or another explicitly shared location.
  4. Launch the application before configuring a large game library.

Linux applications run in a sandboxed environment separate from the main ChromeOS system, although Linux apps share that Linux environment with one another. Do not assume that installing Flatpak automatically provides hardware acceleration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Files, BIOS files and saves

An emulator and a game are separate things. Emulators are software; they do not legally provide commercial game libraries. Use game dumps and BIOS files obtained from hardware and software you legally own, subject to applicable local law.

  • Do not download ROM repositories, BIOS archives, torrents or “all-in-one” ROM packs.
  • Do not use unofficial APK mirrors unless the emulator project explicitly provides that APK.
  • Keep original game files separate from save backups.
  • Back up saves before moving between Android and Linux editions or changing emulator versions.
  • Use descriptive folders by system and title so that a front end can scan them reliably.

Troubleshooting Chromebook emulation

The emulator does not appear in Google Play

Possible causes include an unsupported Chromebook, outdated ChromeOS or Play Store software, incompatible Android ABI, developer exclusion of ChromeOS or large screens, regional availability, or school/work management.

  1. Check the Chromebook model and ChromeOS version.
  2. Update ChromeOS.
  3. See whether other Android apps install.
  4. Check the emulator’s official download page.
  5. Use an official Linux build if one exists and Linux is enabled.
  6. Avoid APK mirrors and unofficial repacks.

The app says the Chromebook is incompatible

Check architecture and ABI support rather than repeatedly reinstalling. Intel/AMD Chromebooks may translate ARM code, which can reduce performance or battery life. Some devices cannot translate arm64 apps. A different official build may exist, but do not force an incompatible APK.

The Linux version launches but is slow

  • Try the Android version.
  • Lower internal resolution.
  • Disable shaders, texture enhancements and other graphics extras.
  • Confirm the architecture with uname -m.
  • Try an older or less demanding console.
  • Check whether the application is using software rendering.

Linux-container graphics limitations are a documented ChromeOS constraint, so a Linux build is not automatically faster than its Android counterpart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller connects but is not detected

Pairing with ChromeOS does not guarantee that the emulator has mapped the device. Open the emulator’s own input settings and bind buttons there. Try a standard Bluetooth or USB gamepad, reconnect it before launching the emulator, and test a different port or cable if using USB.

A physical controller is strongly preferable for PSP, PS1, GameCube and Wii. Touch controls can work for simple handheld games or turn-based titles, but Wii motion input and twin-screen layouts can be awkward.

Games stutter on a seemingly modern Chromebook

Possible causes include ARM translation, thermal throttling, battery-saver mode, high internal resolution, shader compilation, an unsuitable graphics backend or game-specific incompatibility. Lower enhancements first, test while plugged in, and avoid assuming that CPU branding predicts results.

Games show a black screen or crash

Confirm that the game file is valid and supported by the emulator, then test default graphics settings. Check whether the title requires a BIOS file, try the other available graphics backend, disable enhancements, and test a second game. If only one title fails, the problem may be game-specific rather than a Chromebook-wide failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Chromebook runs out of storage

Remove unused downloads, keep only the games you currently play, and maintain separate save backups. An external storage device or microSD card may help, but Android and Linux access depends on ChromeOS permissions, the app’s file picker and the Chromebook model.

When a Chromebook is the wrong tool

PS2, Wii U, Switch and newer systems should not be baseline recommendations for the average Chromebook. A technically installable emulator is not necessarily playable, and results can depend on Android ABI, graphics drivers, game compatibility, cooling and the exact ChromeOS route.

If demanding emulation is your main goal, a dedicated Windows/Linux gaming PC, a compatible gaming handheld or remote play from a more powerful computer may deliver a better experience. Do not buy an expensive Chromebook merely to run NES, SNES, GBA or PS1 games; those systems generally need far less hardware.

Final buying and setup advice

  • Choose by console first: PPSSPP for PSP, Dolphin for GameCube/Wii, DuckStation for PS1 when available, mGBA for GBA, and RetroArch or Lemuroid for older multi-system libraries.
  • Prefer Android when available: it is usually simpler and may provide a better graphics path than Linux on ChromeOS.
  • Use Linux selectively: it is useful for mGBA, PPSSPP, RetroArch and Dolphin builds, but Linux graphics acceleration is a significant qualification.
  • Check architecture: run uname -m and consider Android ABI support, not just the processor’s advertised name.
  • Buy a controller before buying emulator software: a physical gamepad often improves the experience more than optional paid emulator support.
  • Test one game first: installation is not proof of speed, correct graphics, working controls or broad compatibility.
