Windows 11’s former Full Screen Experience is now generally branded Xbox mode. It gives compatible PCs a controller-first, full-screen gaming interface that can open a selected home app, surface games from Xbox Game Pass and leading PC storefronts, and optionally launch automatically after Windows sign-in.
It is not a new Windows edition, a replacement operating system, or a guaranteed FPS-boosting mode. Windows remains underneath, and games may still require their original launchers, accounts, anti-cheat systems, and other requirements.

What happened to Windows 11 Full Screen Experience?
Microsoft originally called this feature Full screen experience (often shortened to FSE). Current Windows guidance and Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 rollout announcement use the name Xbox mode. Older articles, Insider screenshots, and some Windows builds may still show Full screen experience.

Microsoft began expanding Xbox mode beyond handhelds to Windows 11 desktops, laptops, tablets, and handhelds on April 30, 2026. The rollout is gradual and limited to supported markets, so an otherwise eligible PC may not have the setting yet. Microsoft’s rollout announcement describes the broader availability and staged delivery.
Check eligibility before looking for the setting
- Windows version: Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Microsoft’s support documentation lists Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, all editions.
- Rollout status: Version 24H2 alone does not guarantee that Xbox mode has reached your device or market.
- Xbox app: Keep the Xbox PC app current through the Microsoft Store.
- Display and app requirements: The Xbox PC app itself supports Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later, requires at least 150 MB of app storage, and specifies a 720p-or-higher display. Those are Xbox app requirements—not proof that Xbox mode is available.
- Handheld software: Install current firmware, controller software, Bluetooth drivers, and manufacturer utilities where applicable.
To check your Windows version, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. To improve the chance of receiving feature updates promptly, open Settings > Windows Update and enable Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, if that option is shown. Microsoft says this can help with earlier feature delivery, but it does not guarantee immediate access.
How to enable Xbox mode in Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if requested.
- Open the Microsoft Store, select its library or updates area, and update the Xbox PC app. Install updates for Game Bar or related Xbox components if Windows or the Store offers them.
- Return to Settings and select Gaming.
- Open Xbox mode. On older or transitional builds, this may still be labelled Full screen experience.
- Under Choose home app, select the installed supported gaming home app—normally the Xbox app.
- If available, enable Enter Xbox mode on startup.
- Restart, or sign out and sign back in, if Windows requests it.
- Confirm that the full-screen interface opens and that you can navigate it with a controller.
Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode, followed by selecting a home app. Selecting None disables the configured Xbox mode home app. See the official Microsoft support instructions for build-specific wording.
How to enter Xbox mode after setup
Xbox mode and automatic startup are separate capabilities. You may be able to enter the interface manually even when your build does not offer automatic startup.

- On a supported handheld, press its Xbox/Guide button or equivalent control.
- Open Task View with Windows + Tab and select the gaming home app.
Button names and gestures vary by Windows build, controller, and handheld software. If a controller is not responding, a keyboard or touch screen is usually the quickest way to reach the interface or desktop.
How to exit Xbox mode and return to the desktop
Xbox mode is reversible. Press Windows + Tab to open Task View and select the Windows desktop. You can also press Windows + G and use the Game Bar Home control, or use the supported Xbox button or swipe gesture on your device.
To stop Windows from entering the gaming interface after sign-in, return to Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode (or Full screen experience) and turn off Enter Xbox mode on startup. Selecting None as the home app is another documented way to disable the configured experience.
What Xbox mode actually shows
The interface is designed to reduce desktop interaction when you are holding a controller. It can provide access to:

- Games available through the Xbox PC app and PC Game Pass.
- Installed games from leading PC storefronts.
- A full-screen, controller-navigable home interface.
- Normal Windows access when you switch back to the desktop.
“Leading storefronts” does not mean every PC game will appear automatically. Detection can be incomplete for games installed manually, titles on an inaccessible drive, emulators, utilities, or games that depend on a separate launcher. A storefront app may also need to be installed, signed in, and able to locate the game.
Xbox mode does not remove third-party requirements. Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, anti-cheat services, game-specific accounts, and other launch components may still be involved. Microsoft describes an aggregated library, not universal launcher detection. Read Microsoft’s Xbox mode announcement for its stated storefront scope.
Game Pass is optional, not required
The Xbox PC app is the central software associated with Xbox mode, but you do not need a Game Pass subscription simply to use the app or the interface. Game Pass is useful if you want a ready-made catalog rather than buying every game separately.

PC Game Pass can include a rotating PC catalog and EA Play access, with day-one releases subject to plan and title exclusions. Ultimate is more appropriate for people who also use an Xbox console or cloud gaming. It is poor value if you only want a Windows launcher and already own most games on Steam or another store. A subscription provides access, not permanent ownership; titles can leave the catalog, and availability varies by plan, region, platform, and time. Consult the current Game Pass catalog for live availability.
Troubleshooting missing or incomplete Xbox mode features
| Problem | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox mode or Full screen experience is missing | Windows is below 24H2, the rollout has not reached the PC, the market is unsupported, or the apps are outdated | Check Settings > System > About; install Windows and Store updates; restart; then wait for the supported rollout if the page remains absent. |
| The startup toggle is missing | Manual entry and automatic startup are being delivered separately, or the build exposes only part of the feature | Update Windows and the Xbox app. Use manual entry while waiting; do not assume startup support is guaranteed. |
| Games are missing | The game uses a separate launcher, was installed manually, is on an inaccessible drive, or has not been detected | Install and sign in to the relevant storefront, verify the game is installed and visible there, and launch it manually if necessary. |
| The controller cannot navigate | Pairing, firmware, driver, battery, or remapping conflict | Reconnect it, test a wired connection, update firmware and Bluetooth drivers, and check Xbox Accessories or the device maker’s control software. |
| The interface appears frozen or the desktop is hidden | The full-screen layer is obscuring normal Windows | Press Windows + Tab, then Windows + G. Use a keyboard or touch input; sign out or restart only if those routes fail. |
| The interface is unstable | Preview Windows, incomplete rollout components, or conflicting manufacturer software | Return to a stable Windows build where possible, update device utilities, and disable unofficial feature modifications. |
Do not force a missing production feature casually
Early reports may refer to Windows Insider builds or third-party feature-flag tools such as ViVeTool. These methods are build-specific, unofficial, and capable of exposing incomplete or changing menus. Microsoft’s supported route is to keep Windows and the Xbox app updated and wait for the rollout. Do not treat an old feature ID or command as a permanent installation method.

| Option | Best for | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox mode | Windows users wanting Microsoft’s integrated controller-first interface | Built into supported Windows 11 builds; can aggregate Xbox and leading storefront libraries; optional automatic startup | Gradual availability; incomplete coverage is possible; less customizable than dedicated library managers |
| Steam Big Picture Mode | Players whose library is mainly on Steam | Mature controller-oriented interface centered on Steam | Not a Windows-wide shell; other launchers and manually added games require additional setup |
| Playnite | Users managing several launchers, emulators, manual games, and custom themes | Extensive customization and broad library-management options | More setup and maintenance than Xbox mode; not Microsoft’s integrated Windows experience |
| Manufacturer launcher | Handheld owners needing hardware controls | Power profiles, fan controls, button mapping, display settings, and device-specific tools | Usually tied to one manufacturer; may overlap with rather than replace Xbox mode |
| SteamOS or another dedicated gaming Linux distribution | Users willing to change operating systems for a console-like boot experience | Gaming-focused OS design | May require repartitioning or dual boot; compatibility can vary for anti-cheat, Game Pass PC, launchers, and Windows utilities |
These options are not always mutually exclusive. A handheld may use Xbox mode for the main interface, manufacturer software for wattage and controls, and Steam or Playnite for specific libraries.
Should you enable automatic startup?
Turn on Enter Xbox mode on startup when the device is primarily a gaming handheld, a living-room PC, or a compact system connected to a TV. It makes controller access faster and hides much of the ordinary desktop.

What Xbox mode does not promise
- It does not work on every Windows 11 PC immediately; rollout and market support matter.
- It does not support Windows 10 as an Xbox mode platform, even though the Xbox PC app itself supports Windows 10/11 22H2 or later.
- It does not automatically display every launcher, emulator, or manually installed executable.
- It does not replace SteamOS or turn Windows into an Xbox console operating system.
- It does not guarantee higher frame rates. Microsoft emphasizes a streamlined, less distracting interface, not a universal performance increase.
- It does not make Game Pass titles permanent purchases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Xbox mode on Windows 10?
No—not according to Microsoft’s Xbox mode requirements. Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. The separate Xbox PC app has broader Windows 10/11 version 22H2 requirements.
Do I need an ROG Ally, Legion Go, or another handheld?
No. Microsoft began expanding Xbox mode to compatible Windows 11 desktops, laptops, tablets, and handhelds. Availability still depends on the rollout, market, and Windows build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy is Full screen experience missing from Settings?
The PC may be below Windows 11 24H2, the Xbox app may be outdated, the feature may not yet be available in your market or rollout cohort, or your build may use the newer Xbox mode name. Update Windows and the Store apps, restart, and check again.
Will Xbox mode show all my Steam and Epic games?
Not necessarily. Microsoft describes aggregation from leading PC storefronts, but detection can be incomplete for separate launchers, manual installations, emulators, inaccessible drives, or games requiring additional accounts and services.
The Bottom Line
If the option is available, use the supported path: Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode, select the Xbox app as the home app, and optionally enable startup. If you cannot find it, update to Windows 11 24H2 or later and the Xbox PC app, then account for Microsoft’s gradual, market-limited rollout. Avoid forcing the feature with unofficial tools unless you intentionally accept Insider-build risks.
