Quick recommendations
| Best for | Choose | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most Nintendo libraries | Delta | Simple interface, save states, cheats, customizable touch controls and controller support | Not intended for PSP, PS2, GameCube/Wii or modern systems |
| PSP | PPSSPP | Dedicated PSP emulator with mature graphics and control settings | Some demanding games need tuning; a physical controller is preferable |
| Advanced multi-system use | RetroArch | Many cores, shaders, remapping, playlists and detailed configuration | Its terminology and settings can overwhelm beginners |
| One large retro library | Provenance | Unified interface across a wide range of classic systems | Support for demanding systems does not guarantee smooth gameplay |
| PlayStation 1 | Gamma or RetroArch | Gamma offers a more focused PS1 workflow; RetroArch offers more control | Verify current BIOS, controller, save and multi-disc behavior |
| Nintendo 3DS | Folium or Provenance | Purpose-built or broad-platform options worth investigating | Performance and dual-screen usability vary substantially |
For most readers, the practical starting point is Delta. It is easier to configure than a multi-system frontend and fits Nintendo handheld and 8-bit/16-bit console libraries especially well. If your games are mainly PSP titles, skip the general-purpose options and install PPSSPP instead.

What an iPhone emulator actually is
An emulator recreates the behavior of another console or computer so software designed for that system can run on the iPhone. In this guide, “iPhone emulator” means console and handheld emulation—not an app that emulates iOS, runs a current PlayStation or Xbox, or turns the phone into a Windows PC.
- Frontend: The library and interface used to organize and launch games.
- Core: The actual system emulator. RetroArch, for example, uses different cores for different consoles.
- ROM or game image: A digital copy of software from a cartridge, disc or other medium.
- BIOS or firmware: System software that some emulators or consoles require.
A long system list is not proof that an app runs every game well. Compatibility depends on the emulator implementation, the individual title, graphics settings, iPhone hardware, thermals and sometimes the distribution method.
1. Delta: the best default for Nintendo gaming
Best for: NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and many Nintendo 64 games.
Delta is the easiest recommendation for beginners who want to import legally obtained Nintendo game files and start playing without learning cores or complicated graphics menus. Its official project lists emulation, controller skins, save states and cheat codes among its features. The project information is available on Delta’s official repository.
Why Delta works well
- Its iOS-style interface is easier to understand than a technical frontend.
- Save states and in-game saves support both quick sessions and longer playthroughs.
- Touch-control layouts can be customized, and physical controllers are supported.
- It is a natural fit for Game Boy, GBA, NES and SNES games.
Delta is not the right answer for every Nintendo system. Nintendo 64 compatibility remains game-dependent, while PSP, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Wii and modern systems are outside its role. Availability and features can also differ by storefront region and distribution method.
2. PPSSPP: the best PSP emulator
Best for: PlayStation Portable games.
PPSSPP is the clearest choice when PSP is your priority. A dedicated emulator offers PSP-specific graphics, rendering and control options that a general multi-system app may not present as clearly. Its official iOS documentation confirms that the App Store version is available without sideloading; consult the official PPSSPP iOS guide for current distribution details.
PSP performance varies by title. If a game struggles, reduce internal resolution and disable expensive enhancements before experimenting with frameskip. Texture scaling and other visual improvements can look excellent on a modern iPhone, but they also increase the workload.

- WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
Glass controls are workable for menus, turn-based games and short sessions, but a physical controller is strongly preferable for action games, racing games and titles that make heavy use of shoulder buttons or analog input.
Does PPSSPP require JIT?
Usually, no. JIT, or just-in-time compilation, allows some software to compile code during execution and can improve performance in certain scenarios. iOS distribution restrictions make JIT availability different between App Store and sideloaded builds, but PPSSPP’s documentation says JIT is not generally critical to PSP performance. Do not sideload solely because an old guide claims that JIT is mandatory without identifying the emulator build, iPhone, game and settings involved.
3. RetroArch: the best choice for advanced users
Best for: Readers who want one highly configurable environment for many systems.
RetroArch uses emulator cores rather than presenting every system as a separate app. It can provide extensive controller remapping, shaders, video filters, playlists and per-game or per-core settings. This makes it attractive to experienced users who want control over display scaling, latency, input and library organization.
Recommended Free Tools
The trade-off is complexity. You may need to select a core, understand where settings are stored, build playlists and decide whether a change applies globally, to one core or only to one game. A system list also does not guarantee equal compatibility across all titles.
Choose RetroArch over Delta when customization matters more than convenience. Choose Delta or Provenance when you want to import games and play with fewer decisions.
4. Provenance: the broadest unified library candidate
Best for: A large collection spanning many classic platforms.

- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
Provenance’s project materials advertise support across more than 50 systems, including Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Sony, arcade, Dreamcast, GameCube/Wii and 3DS-related platforms. Its features include library management, save states, controller skins and cheats. See the official Provenance repository and Provenance documentation for current details.
The App Store listing also describes import changes, iCloud improvements, Dreamcast and Flycast work, GameCube/Wii fixes and expanded PPSSPP integration. Those signals make Provenance a compelling all-in-one option, but “supports” must not be read as “every game runs smoothly.” Dreamcast, Saturn, GameCube, Wii and 3DS titles are more sensitive to the iPhone model, thermal conditions, emulator version and individual game.
Check whether a feature is free, optional or associated with Provenance Plus in the current listing before paying. Cloud features may cover saves, artwork, settings or other data differently; do not assume that a synced library is a complete backup of every ROM, BIOS and save file.
5. Gamma for PS1, and Folium for 3DS
Gamma: a focused PS1 option
Gamma is worth considering if your library is primarily PlayStation 1 and you do not want to learn RetroArch. A focused app can be easier to approach than a multi-system frontend, but verify the current App Store listing for advertisements, paid upgrades, controller behavior, BIOS requirements, save synchronization and multi-disc support before committing to it.
There is not enough basis to claim that Gamma universally beats RetroArch on compatibility. RetroArch is the more flexible option; Gamma is the simpler PS1-oriented one when its current feature set matches your needs.

Folium and Provenance for 3DS
3DS emulation should be treated as an investigation, not a guaranteed purchase. It is substantially more demanding than GBA, SNES or PS1 emulation, and results vary by iPhone generation, game, graphics settings and emulator build.
A single iPhone screen also complicates a system designed around two displays and touch input. A controller improves buttons and analog movement but does not eliminate the need to manage the second screen. Check current price, minimum iOS version, supported devices, recent updates and game-specific reports before paying for a 3DS-focused app.

App Store or sideloading?
For ordinary retro gaming, sideloading is often unnecessary. Established emulators can be obtained through the App Store in at least some regions, which avoids signing and certificate maintenance.
Sideloading may still be useful for an experimental build, a feature unavailable in the App Store version, an emulator not accepted in your storefront or a specific JIT-related experiment. It adds trust, signing and maintenance overhead, and a certificate can stop working.

Do not install random configuration profiles, enterprise certificates or “one-click emulator” packages from unknown sites. If a sideloaded app disappears or stops opening, return to the developer’s official distribution instructions rather than downloading a replacement IPA from an unfamiliar source.
Storefront availability is regional. A US App Store listing does not prove availability in the EU, UK, India or elsewhere. Avoid casually changing your Apple Account region: subscriptions, payment methods and existing purchases can be affected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to add your own games
Exact labels differ between apps, but the usual workflow is:
- Obtain a game file that you are legally entitled to use under the law where you live.
- Place it in the Files app, iCloud Drive, an AirDrop destination or another supported storage location.
- Use the emulator’s Import, Open in or Add Game command.
- Select the file and let the app scan or copy it into its library.
- Launch the game, confirm controls and create both an in-game save and, when useful, a save state.
Provenance’s documentation describes importing through Files, AirDrop, Safari downloads, WebDAV and related methods, but exact behavior can change between builds. Not every emulator accepts every archive format. If a game does not appear, check its extension, supported system and whether the file is still only in cloud storage. If the archive is unsupported, extract it first.
A blank screen can indicate a missing BIOS, a corrupt dump, an unsupported format or an emulator incompatibility. Multi-disc games should be handled through the app’s disc-management feature rather than imported as unrelated games.

Protect your saves
Keep the distinction between in-game saves, save states, memory-card saves and cloud-synced saves. Use in-game saves for important progress, because save states can be less portable between emulator versions. Back up important save files independently, especially before deleting an app, changing its storage location or enabling a new sync system.
Do you need a controller?
Touch controls are fine for turn-based RPGs, puzzle games, many handheld titles and short sessions. A physical controller is strongly preferable for N64 games, PSP action games, PS1 titles, racing games, fighting games and GameCube/Wii-style controls.
Apple’s Game Controller framework supports common devices including DualShock 4, DualSense and Xbox controllers. Individual emulator mappings remain app-specific, so compatibility does not guarantee perfect button placement.
- Bluetooth console controller: Best value if you already own a PlayStation or Xbox pad.
- Telescopic controller: More portable and console-like, but check the iPhone connector and case clearance.
- Case/controller combination: Convenient, though it may restrict phone cases, charging or iPad use.
- Retro-style Bluetooth pad: A good match for Delta, RetroArch and NES/SNES libraries.
Backbone and Razer Kishi-style controllers suit frequent mobile gaming, while 8BitDo controllers are attractive for retro layouts. Check the official Backbone, Razer and 8BitDo listings for the exact connector and device compatibility. If you already own a DualSense, DualShock 4 or Xbox Wireless Controller, buying another pad may be unnecessary.
How much does the iPhone model matter?
It matters most once you move beyond older 8-bit and 16-bit systems. Performance depends on the SoC, GPU, RAM, iOS version, emulator build, thermal throttling, JIT availability, resolution, shaders and the individual game.
- 8-bit and 16-bit systems: Usually easy for modern iPhones.
- GBA, DS, PS1 and N64: Generally practical, with occasional game-specific issues.
- PSP: Often good in PPSSPP, but demanding games may need lower resolution or other adjustments.
- Dreamcast, Saturn, GameCube, Wii and 3DS: More variable and should not be marketed as universally smooth.
If a game runs slowly, first confirm that the app is intended for the system. Then disable shaders and enhancements, reduce internal resolution, try another graphics backend if available, and check for heat-related throttling. Use frameskip cautiously: it may improve responsiveness but can make animation and gameplay less accurate. Audio crackling can result from frame pacing, excessive enhancements, audio-latency settings, heat or game-specific incompatibility.
Are iPhone emulators legal?
Separate the emulator software from the game files and BIOS files. Emulator software is not automatically unlawful, but ROMs, disc images and firmware can remain copyrighted. The fact that you own a physical cartridge or disc does not automatically mean that downloading any matching file is lawful in every country.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use game images and BIOS files you are legally entitled to use under the law where you live. Do not rely on ROM repositories, preloaded emulator bundles or BIOS bundles, and do not assume Apple’s approval of an app settles the copyright status of every file used with it. Apple’s App Review Guidelines make developers responsible for complying with applicable laws when distributing emulator software and game downloads.
Quick Recap
