Best Encoder Preset for 4K 60fps YouTube Live on an RTX 4070

For 4K60 SDR gaming on YouTube, start with OBS NVENC AV1 at P6, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation—then test your game and GPU headroom.

For a standard SDR 4K60 YouTube gaming stream on an RTX 4070, start with OBS’s Hardware (NVENC, AV1) encoder and P6: Slower (Better Quality). Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and 35 Mbps—the bitrate YouTube currently recommends for AV1 or HEVC at 4K60. Treat this as a starting configuration, not a proven universal winner: test it with your game and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Recommended OBS settings for SDR 4K60

In OBS, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, then configure the Streaming tab. For an RTX 4070, OBS’s NVIDIA guide points to AV1 encoding on RTX 40-series GPUs. The settings below combine that guide’s practical starting point with YouTube’s current 4K60 bitrate recommendation.

OBS setting Starting value Why it matters
Encoder Hardware (NVENC, AV1) OBS recommends this option for YouTube with RTX 40-series hardware.
Rate Control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest.
Bitrate 35,000 Kbps YouTube’s current recommended AV1/HEVC bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps.
Keyframe Interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Preset P6: Slower (Better Quality) OBS’s NVIDIA guide gives P6 as a quality-oriented starting preset.
Tuning High Quality The guide’s recommended starting tuning for this setup.
Multipass Mode Two Passes (Quarter Resolution) The guide’s starting multipass option.
Look-ahead On initially; turn off if GPU utilization is high OBS’s guide includes it, but advises disabling it when GPU load is high.
Psycho Visual Tuning On Included in the guide’s starting configuration.
Maximum B-frames 4 with Look-ahead on; 2 with it off These are the guide’s respective recommendations.

Setting labels can vary between OBS versions. OBS’s NVIDIA guide was last updated in 2022, so use it as a practical starting configuration rather than a guarantee that every option name or result is identical in every release. OBS’s newer 31.0 guidance cautions that Ultra High Quality tuning is “Not recommended for gaming content.” Do not enable it as a blanket gaming recommendation. Its split-encode guidance requires two or more Ada NVENC engines (RTX 4070 Ti or higher); do not assume the ordinary RTX 4070 has that dual-engine capability. Choose AV1, HEVC, or H.264 for your stream

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps. For a standard SDR stream, AV1 is the strongest starting choice supported here: OBS’s RTX 40-series guidance supports it, and YouTube recommends a lower bitrate for AV1/HEVC than for H.264 at 4K60. That is not evidence of a specific quality advantage or a measured RTX 4070 head-to-head result.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stream type or codec 4K60 guidance Practical choice
AV1, SDR YouTube recommends 35 Mbps. Use as the starting codec for an RTX 4070 SDR stream.
HEVC/H.265, SDR YouTube recommends 35 Mbps. Usable alternative where it suits your workflow; the researched guidance does not establish a quality ranking against AV1.
H.264, SDR YouTube recommends 50 Mbps. Use if you need H.264 compatibility and can sustain the higher recommended bitrate.
HDR YouTube does not support AV1 for HDR and recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); HDR uses 10-bit. Switch to HEVC/H.265 and use OBS’s HEVC and main10-profile guidance for YouTube HDR.

The figures are YouTube recommendations, not a promise of visual quality and not proof that your upload connection can hold the bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance also says low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K; 4K live streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. YouTube Live encoder settings

Test the actual game before relying on the preset

The encoder shares the GPU with the game’s rendering work. P6 and the additional quality options are starting points, not an RTX 4070-specific benchmark result. A demanding game, complex scenes, capture sources, driver differences, or an unstable upload can change what runs smoothly.

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled live stream and copy its stream key into OBS under Settings → Stream. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. In OBS, set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps if that matches your game and intended stream. Set the video canvas and output scaling deliberately; upscaling a lower-resolution game does not create native 4K detail.
  3. Start a private or unlisted test where possible, using representative gameplay, scene transitions, and audio. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Check OBS’s Stats dock and YouTube’s stream health while the test runs. Look for rendering lag, encoding lag, dropped frames, bitrate instability, and audio problems.
  5. If the GPU is saturated or the stream lags, reduce the game’s frame rate or graphics load first. If utilization remains high, disable Look-ahead; then retest before changing other quality options.
  6. If frames drop because the upload cannot sustain the target, check the connection under load and lower the bitrate to a stable value. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is a target, not a requirement to overload an unstable connection.

Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it. YouTube’s 2-second keyframe target should be retained; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its 4K guidance does not offer low-latency optimization, so choose normal latency expectations for a 4K broadcast.

Common 4K60 streaming problems and fixes

  • YouTube reports insufficient bitrate or unstable stream health: verify that OBS is set to CBR and that the upload connection can continuously sustain the configured bitrate. Test on the same network and during comparable household usage; reduce bitrate if the line cannot hold it.
  • OBS reports encoding lag: the encoder workload may be competing with rendering. Turn off Look-ahead, reduce game graphics or frame rate, and retest.
  • OBS reports rendering lag: the game may be using too much GPU capacity. Lower graphics settings or cap the game frame rate so OBS has rendering headroom.
  • HDR is washed out or unavailable: confirm the stream is configured for HDR throughout the capture and output path, then use HEVC/H.265 with the main10 profile rather than AV1 for YouTube HDR.
  • Stream key or connection errors: confirm the key in OBS matches the active YouTube Studio stream, and check that the selected ingest protocol and network allow the connection. Reset a compromised key in YouTube Studio.
  • 4K stream has more delay than expected: YouTube states that low-latency optimization is not available at 4K. This is a platform limitation, not a reason to increase the keyframe interval.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Using an encoder preset does not grant rights to the game, music, video, or other material in a broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check the game publisher’s streaming policy—particularly for licensed music and cutscenes. YouTube may interrupt or restrict live streams that violate copyright rules. Check YouTube’s current live streaming encoder and setup guidance before an event, since platform requirements can change.
