Cat 6 is the best Ethernet cable for most gaming PCs and consoles. It is appropriate for ordinary gigabit Ethernet, widely available, and usually flexible enough for a gaming desk. Upgrade to Cat 6A for 10GbE hardware, longer high-speed runs, or deliberate future-proofing; do not buy Cat 8 just because its category number is higher.
For most gaming PCs and consoles, buy a standards-compliant Cat 6 Ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors. Cat 6 comfortably handles ordinary gigabit networking and is a sensible balance of price, flexibility, availability, and upgrade headroom. Choose Cat 6A instead if you have 10GbE hardware, need a long high-speed run, or are wiring your home for future 10GbE use.

Do not buy Cat 8 solely because the number is larger. A cable cannot lower your ping beyond what your console or PC, router or switch, Internet connection, and game-server route allow.

Best overall: Cat 6 Ethernet cable
A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is the best default for a gaming setup. Look for a properly marked cable with RJ45 connectors, the length you actually need, durable strain relief, and a return policy that makes it possible to replace a defective cable.
Cat 6 is rated to 250 MHz and is commonly used for 1000BASE-T gigabit Ethernet. Under suitable conditions, it can also carry higher-rate traffic over shorter distances. Fluke Networks’ category comparison lists Cat 5e at 100 MHz and 1Gb/s, Cat 6 at 250 MHz and 1Gb/s with possible higher-rate operation in suitable circumstances, Cat 6A at 500 MHz and 10Gb/s, and Cat 8 at 2 GHz and 40Gb/s over a shorter specified reach. See Fluke Networks’ Ethernet cable category overview for the electrical-performance context.
For a typical console or gaming PC connected to a gigabit router, Cat 6 is not a compromise. It already exceeds what the ordinary 1GbE link can negotiate. A gaming label, gold-plated plug, or claim of “ultra-low latency” does not make a Cat 6 cable transmit game traffic faster than another correctly functioning cable on the same link.
What to check before buying Cat 6
- Category marking: The jacket or packaging should clearly identify the cable as Cat 6.
- Connectors: Standard RJ45 plugs should fit the Ethernet ports on your console, PC, router, or switch.
- Length: Choose enough length to route the cable without tension, but do not assume extra length improves performance.
- Construction: Stranded patch cables are generally convenient for short device connections; check the listing if solid versus stranded conductors matter for your installation.
- Flexibility and strain relief: A cable that bends sensibly and protects the plug tab is easier to install behind a desk.
- Returns and warranty: Useful protection if the cable will not negotiate the expected link speed.
When comparing a Cat 6 Ethernet cable, prioritize those details over gaming-themed packaging. Product listings should be checked at publication time for the actual category marking, length, connector design, conductor construction, and availability.
Best for 10GbE and future-proofing: Cat 6A
Cat 6A is the better choice when the rest of your network can use 10GbE or when you are deliberately installing a longer, higher-capacity run. It is specified for 10GbE across channels up to 100 meters when the cable, connectors, termination, and installation meet the relevant requirements. Cisco describes Cat 6A as a 500 MHz cable designed for up to 10Gbps across channels up to 100 meters, while also noting that it is typically thicker and less flexible than lower-category cable. Cisco’s cabling guidance explains the trade-off.

- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Choose a Cat 6A Ethernet cable if:
- Your PC, router, switch, or network adapter has 10GbE ports.
- You are running cable between rooms and want more reliable 10GbE headroom.
- The run is long enough that Cat 6’s 10GbE reach may become a limitation.
- You are opening walls or installing permanent structured cabling and do not want to replace it soon.
Cat 6A is not automatically better for online gaming on a 1GbE console. It may be thicker, stiffer, harder to hide, and more expensive without changing the negotiated rate or game latency. Treat it as an infrastructure upgrade, not a frame-rate or ping upgrade.
When Cat 5e is still a good choice
Cat 5e is acceptable for a short replacement cable when your network operates at 1GbE. A correctly terminated Cat 5e cable can provide a stable gigabit connection and is not defective or unsuitable simply because it is older than Cat 6. Cisco also documents multigigabit operation over Cat 5e in compatible systems, including 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps scenarios; the endpoint ports and installation must support those rates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCat 5e’s disadvantage is mostly reduced upgrade headroom. If the price difference is small, Cat 6 is the more sensible new purchase. If you already have a working Cat 5e cable and the device negotiates the expected speed, replacing it just to obtain a higher category is unlikely to improve gaming.
Why Cat 8 is usually unnecessary for gaming
Cat 8 has a higher nominal category rating, but that does not mean a PS5, Xbox, gaming PC, router, or Internet service will operate faster with it. Cat 8 is intended for specialized high-speed environments and has a shorter specified reach for its top rates. It is not a shortcut to lower ping.
Suppose a console has a 1GbE port and connects to a 1GbE router over a Cat 8 cable. The link remains limited by those ports. If the Internet connection is congested or the game server is geographically distant, Cat 8 cannot remove that delay either. Cisco’s documentation shows why achievable rates depend on the cable category, port capabilities, distance, bundling, and termination quality—not the cable label in isolation. Cisco’s Ethernet cabling and speed guidance provides that system-level context.

Ethernet cable category describes electrical performance. It does not guarantee a particular gaming experience. Keep these measurements separate:
- Link speed: The negotiated connection rate between your device and the router or switch.
- Throughput: How much data can be transferred successfully over the connection.
- Ping or latency: The round-trip time to a destination such as a game server.
- Jitter: Variation in latency from one packet to the next.
- Packet loss: Data that fails to reach its destination and must be retransmitted or is discarded.
Moving from unreliable or interference-prone Wi-Fi to a wired connection can make the local connection more consistent. It may reduce local jitter or packet loss if Wi-Fi congestion was the problem. But changing a working Cat 6 cable to Cat 8 does not inherently lower ping. The path also includes the device’s network interface, router or switch, home network load, ISP, upstream congestion, and the route to the game server.
Choosing the right length and design
For many gaming desks, 6 to 10 feet is enough. Measure the route from the console or PC to the router, wall jack, or switch, then choose the shortest practical cable that reaches without pulling on either connector. Extra slack is better than tension, but a large coil of unnecessary cable does not improve speed.
The general copper Ethernet channel limit is 100 meters, but that does not mean every cable category supports every speed for 100 meters. Fluke Networks gives approximately 35 meters as a Cat 6 limit for 10GBASE-T in its comparison, while Cisco documents approximately 55 meters in one switch implementation and Cat 6A up to 100 meters. The exact result depends on channel construction, patch cords, connection hardware, bundling, and termination quality. Consult Fluke Networks’ bandwidth and data-rate discussion rather than treating a printed patch-cable length as the whole engineering calculation.

Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Flat versus round cable
Flat Ethernet cables can be convenient along baseboards or beneath a door, but flatness is a routing feature, not a speed upgrade. A round cable may be easier to protect, manage, and terminate, and may offer better strain relief depending on the product. Neither shape is automatically faster.
Shielded versus unshielded cable
Shielding is not automatically beneficial in a normal home gaming room. It can be useful in an installation with substantial electrical noise, but shielded components and appropriate grounding need to be used correctly. For most short indoor connections between gaming equipment and a router or switch, a well-made unshielded twisted-pair patch cable is the straightforward option.
Console compatibility and adapters
A compatible PlayStation console can use a standard RJ45 cable. On PS5, select Set Up Wired LAN; on PS4, select Use a LAN Cable in the network setup menus. If the console does not have an Ethernet port, or if you are connecting a handheld or a PC without built-in Ethernet, you may need a model-specific dock or USB network adapter. Verify compatibility with the exact device before buying an adapter.
For a PC, the cable is only one part of the connection. The motherboard or adapter must have an Ethernet port, and the router or switch port must support the desired rate. If you are upgrading beyond gigabit, a 2.5GbE gaming router, 10GbE Ethernet switch, or multigigabit network adapter may be more important than buying a higher-category cable. The cable cannot create a faster negotiated link when the connected ports do not support it.

Installation checklist
- Connect one end to the console or PC and the other to a router, switch, or wall jack.
- Make sure both plugs click fully into place.
- Route the cable without sharp bends, crushing, pinching, or sustained tension.
- Keep it away from moving chair wheels and door hinges where possible.
- Check the negotiated link speed in the device or router interface.
- Run a download or network test, then compare stability—not just the advertised cable category.
Do not sharply kink the cable to fit a narrow gap or trap it under heavy furniture. Poor physical handling can cause intermittent links even when the category printed on the jacket is appropriate.

Troubleshooting a wired gaming connection
If the device does not detect Ethernet
- Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends.
- Try a different router or switch port.
- Test with a known-working cable.
- Check whether the router or switch port LEDs indicate a link.
- Restart the console, PC, and network equipment if appropriate.
- On a Windows PC, check Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet and Device Manager > Network adapters.
- Install the Ethernet adapter driver supplied by the PC or motherboard manufacturer if the adapter is missing or malfunctioning.
If the link is slower than expected
Check the link rate at both ends. A damaged plug, unsuitable port, bad wall termination, poor patch panel, or cable problem can cause a connection to negotiate at 100Mb/s instead of 1Gb/s. Replace or bypass components one at a time. For 2.5GbE or 10GbE, verify that every device in the local link supports the target speed and that the cable length and installation are appropriate.
If ping remains high
First determine whether the problem is local. Test another Ethernet cable, compare wired and Wi-Fi results, check for packet loss to the router, and look for heavy uploads or downloads on the home network. If the local link is clean, the remaining latency may come from the ISP, congestion, or the game server’s distance and route. A higher cable category will not fix those causes.
Buying checklist
- Buy Cat 6 for most console and PC gaming connections.
- Buy Cat 6A for 10GbE, long high-speed runs, or deliberate future-proofing.
- Use Cat 5e when a 1GbE network needs an inexpensive replacement.
- Reserve Cat 8 for a specific high-speed network design.
- Match the cable length to the room and avoid tension, crushing, and sharp bends.
- Check the jacket marking, RJ45 fit, flexibility, strain relief, and return policy.
- Do not pay extra for unsupported promises of lower ping or faster gaming.
- For speeds above 1GbE, verify the ports, router or switch, network adapter, and cable together.
Final verdict
Buy a Cat 6 Ethernet cable for most gaming PCs and consoles. It is sufficient for ordinary gigabit networking and is the most practical default. Choose Cat 6A if you own 10GbE hardware, need a longer high-speed run, or want additional infrastructure headroom. Cat 5e remains perfectly usable on a functioning 1GbE network, while Cat 8 is usually unnecessary. Match the cable to the ports, distance, and network speed your setup can actually use—not to the largest number on the package.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Ethernet cable for gaming?
Cat 6 is the best default for most gaming PCs and consoles because it supports ordinary gigabit Ethernet and offers useful upgrade headroom without the extra thickness or cost of Cat 6A. A correctly functioning Cat 5e cable is also fine on a 1GbE network.
Does Cat 8 reduce gaming ping more than Cat 6?
No. Cat 8 cannot lower ping when the device and router ports, Internet connection, congestion, or game-server route are the limiting factors. It is intended for specialized high-speed network environments, not as a universal gaming upgrade.
When should I buy Cat 6A instead of Cat 6?
Choose Cat 6A if your PC, router, switch, or adapter supports 10GbE, if the run is long enough for Cat 6 10GbE reach to be a concern, or if you are installing permanent cabling and want more upgrade headroom. It is unnecessary solely for a 1GbE console connection.
What Ethernet cable length should I buy for a gaming setup?
Use a cable long enough to reach without tension, typically 6 to 10 feet for many gaming desks. Avoid sharp bends, crushing, pinching, and excessive strain. Extra length does not improve gaming performance.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Cat 6 with RJ45 connectors. Upgrade: Cat 6A for 10GbE or long high-speed runs. Skip Cat 8 unless your home network specifically supports the rates it is designed for.
