The best EXILED plugins are not a universal top-ten list. They are the plugins that match your SCP: Secret Laboratory server’s purpose, support its exact game and EXILED versions, behave safely with your permission system, and remain maintained by their authors. Use the framework to build a deliberate stack: moderation first, then quality-of-life or gameplay features, followed by integrations and diagnostics.

What EXILED is—and what a plugin adds

EXILED is a high-level plugin framework for SCP: Secret Laboratory servers. Its event system lets developers react to server and game events, manipulate game behavior, and implement functions that are not available through normal server settings. EXILED loads through Northwood’s Plugin API while keeping framework code outside the main server assembly. That separation is intended to reduce the impact of small game updates, although it does not make every third-party plugin automatically compatible after an update.

A plugin is a separate .dll assembly built for EXILED. EXILED supplies the loading and event infrastructure; the individual plugin supplies the feature, commands, configuration, permissions, and update responsibility. Installing EXILED alone does not add custom roles, moderation commands, economies, Discord messages, or new rounds. Those capabilities come from separate plugin files.

The official project does not publish a permanent, ranked catalog of third-party plugins. Releases, maintainers, and compatibility change frequently. Therefore, a responsible “best plugins” list is a selection method rather than a static popularity ranking. Check each author’s current release page or community listing immediately before installation.

How to decide which plugins are best for your server

Evaluate every candidate against the same production gates. A plugin that adds an impressive feature but fails one of these gates can create more work than value.

Criterion What to verify Why it matters
Compatibility Supported SCP:SL version, required EXILED build, dependency list, and the date of the latest compatible release A DLL compiled for another API version may fail to load, throw errors, or behave incorrectly after a game update.
Purpose fit The exact problem the plugin solves and which player or staff workflow it changes Every additional assembly increases configuration and conflict surface. Install features your community will actually use.
Operational safety Permission nodes, default access, configuration clarity, error handling, and documented limitations An incorrectly exposed command can let ordinary players alter rounds, punish others, or access staff functions.
Maintenance Release history, issue activity, documentation, and evidence that the author responds to breakage When SCP:SL or EXILED changes, an abandoned plugin can become a permanent outage or security problem.
Lifecycle behavior Whether the author documents reload support, restart requirements, and what happens when settings change Some plugins cannot safely initialize or dispose their hooks while the server is running.
Rollback A known-good DLL and configuration backup, plus a way to remove the plugin without losing other settings A reversible deployment limits downtime when a release causes crashes or incompatibilities.

Compatibility is a production gate, not a cosmetic detail. A release page that says “works with EXILED” without naming the relevant game and framework versions is incomplete evidence. Treat a plugin as unverified until its author states those requirements or the community has confirmed them for your exact server build.

Best plugin types by server goal

Start with the outcome you want for players and staff. The categories below describe useful roles for a plugin stack; they do not claim that every plugin in a category is currently maintained or compatible.

Administration and moderation

Administration plugins are the first priority for a public server. Look for tools that make staff actions consistent and auditable: permission-aware commands, reports, warnings, kicks and bans, staff-only information, moderation menus, and action logs. A good moderation plugin should make it obvious who performed an action, which player was affected, and when it happened. It should also separate observation permissions from destructive permissions, so a junior moderator does not automatically receive owner-level controls.

  • Confirm the plugin’s permission names and default groups before players join.
  • Check whether punishments persist through a restart and whether expiration is supported.
  • Verify that logs include enough context to investigate an appeal.
  • Test commands against a test account rather than your owner account alone.

Do not install overlapping moderation systems without a reason. Two plugins may register the same command, listen to the same report event, or apply contradictory punishment rules.

Quality-of-life improvements

Quality-of-life plugins improve clarity and round flow without fundamentally changing the game. Typical examples include clearer status information, configurable announcements, smoother spectator handling, queue or ready-up conveniences, and small administrative shortcuts. These are often the safest additions because they can be enabled gradually and removed without redesigning the server’s rules.

Review every player-facing message and frequency setting. Excessive broadcasts can hide important warnings, while an information panel that exposes hidden roles or locations can change the competitive balance. Prefer plugins with feature flags, message templates, and separate settings for staff and players.

Custom roles and alternate gameplay

Custom-role and gamemode plugins can give a server a distinctive identity. They may add new role assignments, alter spawn logic, introduce round modifiers, or run event-style scenarios. Their risk is also higher: they often hook deeply into role changes, damage, inventory, doors, warhead logic, or round transitions.

  • Read the author’s rules for combining the plugin with other role or spawn systems.
  • Check how the plugin behaves when a round is forcibly ended or a player disconnects.
  • Test edge cases such as spectators rejoining, late joins, team changes, and server restarts.
  • Keep an ordinary server configuration available so you can disable the feature for standard rounds.

Deploy one gameplay-changing plugin at a time. If a custom role fails, adding another large gameplay assembly before isolating the fault makes logs and reproduction much harder.

Progression and economy

Persistent currencies, rewards, levels, shops, and unlocks can encourage regular play, but they also create a long-term data obligation. Before choosing one, establish where data is stored, how backups work, and what happens if the plugin is removed or its schema changes. A reward system should state whether credits are awarded for time, objectives, wins, or staff-defined events, and whether it can be abused by idling or reconnecting.

Use conservative permissions for administrative balance commands. Test resets and migrations on a copy of the server data. If the author does not explain how to export or delete player data, treat that omission as an operational risk rather than a minor documentation gap.

Communications and external integrations

Integration plugins can send status, moderation, round, or audit information to a chat service, webhook, dashboard, or management system. They are useful when staff cannot watch the game server continuously, but they expand the security boundary beyond the server itself.

  • Store webhook URLs, tokens, and API keys outside public configuration examples.
  • Check exactly which player identifiers and moderation details leave the server.
  • Confirm retry and rate-limit behavior so an external outage does not stall round events.
  • Disable unused event channels instead of forwarding every log line.

An integration should fail closed or degrade gracefully: the SCP:SL server should remain playable if the external service is unavailable.

Logging, metrics, and diagnostics

Diagnostic plugins are especially valuable while assembling a larger stack. They can expose event timing, command usage, errors, or plugin activity that ordinary server output does not make easy to interpret. Select tools that let you increase detail temporarily and then return to normal logging. Excessive debug output can obscure the original failure and increase disk usage.

When troubleshooting conflicts, diagnostic output is more useful if you can reproduce the problem with a minimal set of plugins. Keep a clean test instance or a documented “safe profile” containing only EXILED and the essential administration tools.

Installation on Windows and Linux

EXILED provides an installer and a manual installation method for both Windows and Linux. Follow the project’s current instructions for the EXILED build that matches your SCP:SL server. The framework must be installed before any EXILED plugin DLL can load.

1. Confirm prerequisites

  1. Record the exact SCP:SL server version currently running.
  2. Check the plugin release page for its required EXILED version, dependencies, and any upgrade notes.
  3. Back up the server directory, the EXILED configuration, and any persistent data used by existing plugins.
  4. Stop the server before replacing framework files or installing a first plugin.

2. Install EXILED

Use the official installer when it supports your operating system and server layout. Manual installation is available when you need to control file placement or operate a Linux service account. Do not mix files from unrelated EXILED releases. After installation, start the server once so EXILED can create its directories and per-port configuration.

3. Place the plugin DLL

Download the release .dll from a source controlled by the plugin’s author. Avoid renamed binaries or random reuploads; you need the author’s version information and configuration notes for future troubleshooting.

  • Windows: place the DLL in the EXILED Plugins directory under the server user’s roaming AppData EXILED path, normally represented by %APPDATA%EXILEDPlugins.
  • Linux: place the DLL in ~/.config/EXILED/Plugins for the account that runs the server.

The account that launches the server must be able to read the DLL and write EXILED’s configuration and log locations. Installing the file under a different user’s home directory is a common reason for a plugin appearing to be missing.

4. Start and inspect generated configuration

Start the server and watch the console and logs for the plugin’s load message, dependency errors, exceptions, or permission warnings. EXILED normally stores plugin configuration in a YAML file associated with the server’s port. Open the generated per-port EXILED configuration and read the plugin’s comments before changing values. Keep YAML indentation intact; a malformed file can prevent settings from loading.

5. Configure before opening the server

  1. Set feature flags, limits, messages, cooldowns, and channels to conservative values.
  2. Assign permissions explicitly and verify which groups receive them by default.
  3. Restart or reload only after saving a copy of the working configuration.
  4. Join with a staff test account and a normal player account to verify both sides of the permission boundary.

Reloading plugins and deciding when to restart

EXILED supports the reload plugins command from Remote Admin or the server console. It can load newly added plugins and apply changes without a full process restart. That convenience is not a guarantee that every plugin supports safe dynamic updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynamic updating depends on correct plugin setup and implementation. A plugin may leave event handlers, timers, network connections, cached state, or spawned objects behind when it unloads. EXILED’s documentation places responsibility for those problems with the plugin developer and host. Use a reload only when the author explicitly documents it as safe for that plugin and change. Otherwise, schedule a restart during a maintenance window.

  • Use reload for a documented configuration-only change when the plugin supports it.
  • Prefer a restart after replacing a DLL, changing dependencies, or upgrading EXILED.
  • Check logs immediately after any reload and play through one complete round before calling it successful.
  • If behavior becomes inconsistent, stop the server, restore the previous DLL and YAML, and restart cleanly.

A safe rollout plan for a multi-plugin server

Adding everything at once prevents you from identifying the cause of a failure. A staged rollout gives each assembly a known baseline.

  1. Build a baseline: run the intended SCP:SL and EXILED versions with no optional plugins, recording startup time, warnings, and a normal round.
  2. Add administration first: verify permissions, commands, punishment behavior, and logs with test accounts.
  3. Add one quality-of-life feature: test messages, spectator behavior, queues, and round transitions.
  4. Add gameplay changes individually: complete several rounds, including forced ends and reconnects.
  5. Add persistence or integrations: verify backups, external failures, data retention, and rate limits.
  6. Document the final stack: record DLL versions, configuration backups, dependencies, permissions, and restart requirements.

Keep the previous DLL and its matching configuration until the new release has survived normal traffic. A rollback is only reliable when you know which pair of files worked together.

Common failures and practical fixes

The plugin does not appear to load

  • Confirm the file extension is .dll and that the file is in the correct user’s Plugins directory.
  • Check that the server process runs under the same account whose AppData or home directory you inspected.
  • Compare the plugin’s required EXILED and SCP:SL versions with the running versions.
  • Read startup logs for a missing dependency, blocked assembly, or configuration parse error.

The server starts but a feature does nothing

  • Inspect the generated per-port YAML file for a disabled feature flag or invalid value.
  • Test with an account that has the plugin’s required permission.
  • Check whether the feature activates only during a particular round state or event.
  • Disable other plugins that hook the same event, then reintroduce them one at a time.

Commands are visible to the wrong people

Review the plugin’s permission nodes and your group assignments rather than assuming a command is staff-only. Test from a normal player account, a moderator account, and an owner account. Remove broad permissions and add the narrow nodes required for each job.

A reload causes duplicate messages or unstable behavior

Stop using dynamic reload for that plugin. Restart the server and report the reproducible behavior to the author with the plugin version, EXILED build, SCP:SL version, logs, and steps that triggered it. Do not keep reloading in production while handlers or timers may be accumulating.

An update breaks several plugins at once

Freeze further upgrades, restore the last known-good framework and DLL set, and test the new SCP:SL version in a separate instance. Upgrade EXILED and plugins according to their documented compatibility requirements, one component at a time. A framework update can expose independent problems in plugins that previously appeared stable.

Maintenance after installation

Plugin management is an ongoing operating task, not a one-time upload. Before every SCP:SL or EXILED update, read release notes for breaking API changes and check every installed plugin’s release page. Keep an inventory containing the DLL filename, version, author, dependencies, configuration path, permissions, and whether a restart is required.

  • Back up YAML and persistent data before changing versions.
  • Test updates on a private or maintenance server when possible.
  • Watch startup logs and at least one full round after deployment.
  • Remove abandoned plugins whose feature is no longer needed; an unused assembly still adds conflict and update risk.
  • Review permissions periodically, especially after adding new staff or importing a configuration.

Maintenance quality is part of a plugin’s value. A smaller stack of actively maintained, well-documented assemblies is safer than a large collection chosen solely because it is popular.

Choosing a practical first stack

Server situation Start with Add later only if needed
Small private group One lightweight quality-of-life plugin and narrowly scoped staff tools Custom roles or progression after the group agrees on rules and backups
Public community server Permission-aware moderation, reporting, and audit logging Announcements, queue tools, integrations, then carefully tested gameplay changes
Event-focused server Diagnostics and administrative controls that can reset rounds safely Custom roles, round modifiers, and event-specific communication tools
Persistent progression server Moderation plus a documented data and backup process Economy, rewards, and external dashboards after migration and rollback procedures exist

If you cannot explain a plugin’s purpose, required permissions, compatibility target, and rollback procedure in a short runbook, it is not ready for a production server. That standard is more dependable than a popularity-based ranking because it remains useful as individual releases change.

The Bottom Line

The best EXILED plugin set is a small, version-matched, permission-audited stack built around your server’s goals. Install from the author’s release, test one DLL at a time, keep per-port YAML and rollback backups, and restart instead of dynamically reloading whenever safe-update behavior is not explicitly documented.
