Fix phpMyAdmin by identifying which of three connections is failing: the browser to Nginx over HTTPS, Nginx to PHP-FPM over FastCGI, or PHP/phpMyAdmin to MySQL or MariaDB. A valid certificate proves only that the first connection can negotiate TLS; it does not prove that PHP-FPM is running, that the mysqli extension is loaded by FPM, or that the database account and endpoint are correct.

Map the three connections before changing anything
phpMyAdmin is a browser-based PHP application. The browser requests an HTTPS virtual host, Nginx passes PHP requests to PHP-FPM, and the PHP process opens a MySQL or MariaDB connection. Each hop has different symptoms and different logs.

Do not troubleshoot the database while a simple PHP script cannot execute through the same Nginx location. Conversely, do not treat a green browser padlock as proof that the database connection is healthy.

Classify the exact symptom
Copy the complete message, including an error number, before refreshing or changing configuration. The wording usually identifies the next layer to test.
- TLS warning, refused connection, timeout, or redirect loop: check DNS, firewall rules, port 443, the certificate chain and hostname, and the Nginx
listenandserver_namedirectives. - 502 Bad Gateway: inspect
fastcgi_pass, confirm the PHP-FPM service is running, and verify that the socket belongs to the installed PHP version. - phpMyAdmin says mysqli is missing: install or enable mysqli for the PHP-FPM runtime, then reload FPM and Nginx. Checking only the command-line PHP binary can give a false result because CLI and FPM may use different versions and configuration files.
- “Access denied for user” or an authentication-plugin error: check the username, password, account host component, grants, and authentication plugin.
- “Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket” or error 2002: check the database service and the exact socket path, or switch deliberately to a TCP host and port.
Verify the HTTPS Nginx virtual host
Confirm that the request reaches the intended server block
Check that DNS resolves the hostname to this machine (or to the intended load balancer), that the firewall permits TCP 443, and that Nginx has an HTTPS block with the expected server_name. The certificate must contain the hostname used in the browser. If several virtual hosts exist, a valid certificate for a different site can still appear when the request is routed to the wrong block.
Check both the HTTP and HTTPS blocks. If HTTP is redirected to HTTPS, the redirect should preserve the correct host and path. A proxy or load balancer in front of Nginx must also pass the public scheme and host consistently; otherwise phpMyAdmin can generate links that point back to HTTP or to an internal hostname.
Make sure phpMyAdmin is in the location you are serving
The HTTPS block should route the phpMyAdmin URL to the document root or alias containing the installation, and its PHP location should use the same FPM configuration as the rest of the site. A common mistake is putting the alias in one virtual host while the request is handled by another.
Use a minimal PHP test
Create a temporary file in the same directory and location, for example health.php containing only <?php echo 'ok';. Request it over HTTPS, then remove it immediately after testing. An “ok” response proves that the selected Nginx block can execute PHP through FPM; it does not test database credentials. If the file is downloaded, displayed as source, or returns 502, stop here and fix FastCGI routing first.

Fix PHP-FPM and FastCGI failures
Check the service and the endpoint used by Nginx
Use your operating system’s service manager to inspect the installed PHP-FPM service (the package may use a versioned name such as php8.2-fpm) and read its service log. Then inspect Nginx’s error log while making one request. The fastcgi_pass value must point to the same live Unix socket or TCP listener that FPM is actually using.

sudo systemctl reload nginxUse only the service name that exists on your system; do not start multiple FPM versions merely to make a guessed socket path work. A stale path such as /run/php/php7.4-fpm.sock will produce a 502 when only a newer socket exists. Correct the path, validate the Nginx configuration with nginx -t, and reload Nginx.
Validate the script filename parameter
In the PHP location, fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME must resolve to the actual phpMyAdmin file. An incorrect root, alias, or path-info rule can cause “Primary script unknown” in the FPM log even though the socket is reachable. Compare the resolved path with the file on disk and avoid mixing an alias directive with a document-root calculation that points somewhere else.
Check mysqli in the FPM runtime, not just CLI PHP
phpMyAdmin uses mysqli to connect to MySQL or MariaDB. The command php -m reports modules for the CLI binary, which may be a different PHP version or use a different php.ini than FPM. Inspect the modules loaded by FPM through a temporary phpinfo() page or the FPM configuration, and remove that diagnostic page afterward. Enable the matching mysqli package or extension for that FPM version, restart or reload FPM, then reload Nginx and test again.
If the extension appears in CLI output but phpMyAdmin still reports it missing, compare the CLI version, FPM pool version, extension directory, and loaded configuration files. Do not copy an extension from one PHP version into another; install the package built for the FPM version in use.

Account for HTTP/3 hostname handling
When HTTP/3 is enabled, hostname-dependent behavior can fail if Nginx does not pass the host variable to FPM. In the relevant PHP-FPM location or server block, add:
fastcgi_param HTTP_HOST $host;Reload Nginx and retest. This is specifically a workaround for missing HTTP_HOST in Nginx HTTP/3 configurations; it is not a database or certificate repair.
Check phpMyAdmin’s database endpoint
Understand socket versus TCP
A Unix socket is a local filesystem endpoint on the machine running PHP. It cannot connect to a database on another host. TCP uses a hostname or IP address and a port, and is appropriate when MySQL/MariaDB listens on the network or when the database is remote.

Find the actual socket or listener
Read the MySQL/MariaDB server configuration and the client’s status output to determine the active socket and port. Do not assume a distribution default: package upgrades and parallel database versions can create different paths. In config.inc.php, set the server host, port, and socket deliberately. Avoid specifying a socket path left over from an older installation.

This changes the connection method, so the database account’s host matching must be checked as well; user@localhost and user@127.0.0.1 can be distinct accounts.

Test reachability independently
From the same server that runs PHP-FPM, use the MySQL client with the same host, port or socket, username, and database account that phpMyAdmin uses. A successful client login narrows the problem to phpMyAdmin’s configuration or PHP runtime. A failure with the same error confirms that the endpoint, service, or account still needs attention.
Resolve credentials, grants, and authentication plugins
Check the complete account identity
MySQL accounts are identified by both username and host. Verify the password, the host component, and the grants for the exact endpoint phpMyAdmin selects. Switching from a socket to 127.0.0.1 can select a different host-specific account even when the visible username is unchanged.
Interpret “Access denied” correctly
“Access denied for user” usually means the server was reached but rejected the account, password, host, or requested privileges. It is not fixed by replacing the TLS certificate or changing Nginx’s fastcgi_pass. Test the account from the server, correct the password or grants through an administrative connection, and then repeat the phpMyAdmin login.
Handle unsupported authentication methods
An authentication-plugin error means the server requested a method that the PHP mysqli client cannot use. Check the database account’s authentication plugin and the PHP connector version loaded by FPM. Upgrade or configure compatible client software according to the database administrator’s policy; do not weaken authentication blindly. The same error can persist when CLI PHP has a newer connector than FPM, which is why the FPM runtime must be checked.

HTTPS encrypts the browser-to-Nginx leg. MySQL SSL encrypts the PHP-to-database leg. A valid web certificate does not enable, configure, or validate MySQL SSL, and a database TLS problem does not make the browser certificate invalid.

Configure database TLS only when the database requires or benefits from it
phpMyAdmin’s server configuration can specify MySQL SSL settings, including a certificate authority (CA), client certificate, client key, and verification behavior. For a remote database, SSL is recommended. The CA and verification settings establish trust in the database server; encryption by itself does not authenticate that server.
Treat disabled verification as an exception
Setting $cfg['Servers'][$i]['ssl_verify'] to false disables server-certificate verification. It may explain why a test connection succeeds, but it removes an important protection against connecting to an impostor endpoint. Use it only as a deliberate, temporary exception while correcting the CA or certificate name, not as a general fix for connection errors.

If the browser reports a certificate error, inspect Nginx’s certificate chain and hostname. If phpMyAdmin reports a MySQL certificate or TLS error after the page has loaded, inspect the database CA, client certificate/key permissions, server certificate name, and the SSL options in config.inc.php. These are separate certificate stores and separate handshakes.
Read logs in the order the request travels
- Browser network and security panel: record the URL, response status, redirect chain, TLS alert, and final hostname.
- Nginx access and error logs: look for the selected server block, status code, upstream socket errors, permission failures, and “Primary script unknown.”
- PHP-FPM service and pool logs: check startup failures, missing extensions, script errors, and rejected FastCGI requests.
- phpMyAdmin or PHP application output: capture the complete mysqli message and error number.
- MySQL/MariaDB logs: check whether the server received the connection, rejected authentication, refused TLS, or was not listening.
phpMyAdmin’s own syslog destination is not necessarily the same file as the Nginx or Apache web-server log. Inspect the configured application destination and the database log separately rather than assuming one file contains every failure.
Use a controlled change-and-test cycle
- Save copies of the Nginx virtual-host file, FPM pool configuration, and
config.inc.php. - Write down the current error and the layer it suggests.
- Change one variable only: for example, the FPM socket, mysqli package, socket path, or database host.
- Validate syntax before reloading: run
nginx -tfor Nginx and the appropriate PHP-FPM configuration test for your distribution. - Reload or restart the service that owns the changed setting. A database endpoint change does not require replacing the web certificate; an Nginx change does not repair a database account.
- Repeat the same request and compare the new error with the previous one.
- Revert a change that moves the failure to an earlier layer, then continue with the evidence from the logs.
After the connection works, remove temporary health or phpinfo() files, restrict phpMyAdmin access to trusted networks or an additional authentication layer where appropriate, and keep the public HTTPS hostname consistent in every proxy and redirect.
Common wrong turns and the precise correction
- “The padlock is green, so MySQL must be fine.” The padlock covers browser HTTPS only. Test PHP-FPM and the database account separately.
- “CLI PHP shows mysqli, so phpMyAdmin has it.” CLI and FPM can be different versions. Inspect the modules loaded by FPM.
- “Changing the socket path fixed the 502.” A 502 is an Nginx-to-FPM failure. A database socket error appears only after PHP runs; keep those socket types distinct.
- “Use a socket for a remote database.” Unix sockets are local. Configure a TCP hostname and port for a remote server.
- “Disable every SSL check.” Browser TLS and MySQL TLS are separate. Disabling MySQL certificate verification removes server identity checks and does not fix an invalid browser certificate.
- “ForceSSL will repair the redirect.” The current phpMyAdmin configuration guidance marks ForceSSL as deprecated. Correct the Nginx/proxy scheme and, where a reverse proxy prevents phpMyAdmin from determining its public URL, configure the documented absolute-URI setting such as
PmaAbsoluteUrirather than relying on a deprecated switch.
When to involve the hosting or database administrator
Escalate with the exact timestamp, public hostname, HTTP status, Nginx upstream message, FPM service name and socket, complete phpMyAdmin error, database host/port or socket, and the result of an equivalent MySQL-client test. This evidence lets an administrator distinguish a firewall or listener problem from a bad grant, an incompatible authentication plugin, or a broken PHP package without asking you to change unrelated settings.
The Bottom Line
Work from the outside in: prove the HTTPS virtual host, then PHP-FPM and mysqli, then the database endpoint and account, and finally any MySQL SSL trust settings. Matching the exact error to its layer prevents certificate changes from masking a dead FPM socket, and prevents credential or authentication problems from being misdiagnosed as Nginx failures.
