Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you’re asking, “Does anyone know of any good companion mods?”, the best choice depends on the kind of change you want: a new story companion, more dialogue for familiar characters, or a larger party you can manage. Bethesda and mod-host listings describe several strong options, but they do not establish a universal winner or prove that a mod will work in every load order.
Choose the kind of companion change you want
| Mod | Best fit | What its listing says it adds | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heather Casdin | A new voiced character and story | Bethesda describes a complex, story-driven companion with quests and voiced dialogue across the Commonwealth, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World. Bethesda’s listing says she has over 2,400 lines of custom voiced dialogue; that count has not been independently audited. | Review the current listing for platform availability and requirements. Bethesda’s listing for the separate mod The Machine and Her includes a specific load-order warning; it does not establish an ordering rule for Heather Casdin. |
| Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul | More interaction with selected vanilla companions | The mod page describes added dialogue and content for Cait, Curie, Piper, Nick Valentine, and Danse. It says the author initially chose them based on a player poll. | The page claims compatibility with NPC appearance mods and mods affecting NPC stats, leveled lists, and companion affinity. Treat those as the page’s claims, not a guarantee for every setup. |
| AFT Plus | A larger follower party and follower management | The listing describes a follower framework with recruitment and management options, and reports a cap of 10 followers. This is a current listing claim, not a tested result. | Check the live requirements, compatibility notes, and updates before installing, particularly if you use other follower or quest mods. |
| Tales from the Commonwealth | A broader quest and NPC expansion that also adds companions | Bethesda’s listing says it adds more than 20 quests, 125 NPCs, and three companions with more than 1,000 lines apiece. These are listing figures, not independently verified counts. | Check the current listing for platform availability, requirements, and compatibility details. |
For a new companion and a separate story: Heather Casdin
Choose Heather Casdin if you want a character-led addition rather than simply expanding the behavior of an existing companion. Bethesda describes quests and voiced dialogue that take place across the Commonwealth, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World, giving the mod a broader story footprint than a dialogue-only add-on. The “over 2,400 lines” figure is Bethesda’s own listing claim, and its page date is not shown.
This is a good fit when your priority is meeting a new character and following her story. The listing alone does not establish how well the mod fits a particular platform, game version, or combination of other mods, so confirm those details before downloading.
For more dialogue from familiar companions: Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul
If you would rather add interactions to characters you already know, Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul focuses on selected vanilla companions: Cait, Curie, Piper, Nick Valentine, and Danse. Its page says the author initially selected those characters based on a player poll; that explains the initial selection, not a claim that these are the only companions who could benefit from added dialogue.

The page also says NPC appearance mods are compatible, as are mods that affect NPC stats, leveled lists, and companion affinity. Those notes are useful starting points, but compatibility depends on the specific mod versions and the rest of your setup. Consult the current page and any relevant patch hub rather than treating a general compatibility statement as a guarantee.
For a larger party and follower controls: AFT Plus
AFT Plus is the option to investigate if your main goal is recruiting and managing multiple followers. Its Nexus Mods listing describes a follower framework and reports a maximum of 10 followers. That number is a claim on the mod’s listing, not an independently tested limit or a promise that every follower combination will behave correctly.

The listing includes compatibility notes and update information dated August and September 2026. Because follower frameworks can overlap with other follower and quest mods, read the current requirements and notes for your exact game setup before installation. Do not assume that the listed cap, requirements, or compatibility details apply unchanged to every version or platform.
For quests, NPCs, and companions together: Tales from the Commonwealth
Tales from the Commonwealth suits players looking for a broader world expansion rather than a companion-only change. Bethesda’s listing says it adds more than 20 quests, 125 NPCs, and three companions, each with more than 1,000 lines. Those figures describe what the listing claims; they are not independent measurements. Check Bethesda’s current page for the specific requirements and availability relevant to your setup.

Check platform, load order, and compatibility before installing
Mod availability and compatibility are specific to the mod version, platform, game setup, and other installed mods. The available listings do not establish a complete current PC, Xbox, and PlayStation availability matrix for these recommendations. Confirm that the mod is available for your platform and edition, then read its live requirements and compatibility notes. If another mod has a patch hub, check that too.
One specific load-order warning
Bethesda’s listing for The Machine and Her gives a particular instruction: download the named companion-related mod and place it before The Machine and Her in the load order to prevent a brown-face issue affecting its NPCs. This is a warning for that mod and situation—not a general load-order rule for the other recommendations in this guide.

Installing into an existing save
The available listings do not establish save-specific installation guidance across all four mods. Before adding one to an existing save, check its current page for instructions about installation, removal, and any required patches. Do not infer that a mod is safe to add or remove mid-playthrough simply because its feature description sounds self-contained.

- Pick Heather Casdin if you want a new character with quests and voiced dialogue.
- Pick Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul if you want additional dialogue for its selected vanilla companions.
- Look at AFT Plus if recruiting and managing a larger follower party is the priority.
- Look at Tales from the Commonwealth if you want quests and new NPCs as well as companions.
These are goal-based recommendations, not a measured quality ranking: the listings describe features and selected compatibility details, but do not establish comparative stability or performance in an arbitrary load order.
