A useful list separates historical influence from what is compelling to play now, while representing the genre’s very different formats. By that standard, Street Fighter II is a strong historical anchor; Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Soulcalibur, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate show why no single style can stand for the whole genre.
How to judge the best fighting games
“Best” can mean historically influential, exceptionally designed, still active in competition, approachable to new players, or representative of a particular fighting-game format. Those measures do not always point to the same game. This selection treats historical influence and present-day relevance as separate strengths rather than pretending there is a definitive all-time order.
It also uses “fighting game” broadly. Traditional one-on-one fighters, 3D fighters, team-based combat and platform fighters have different movement, match structures and goals. The picks below are a curated cross-section, not an exhaustive list or claim that other series do not belong.
Essential fighting games across eras and styles
1. Street Fighter II — the historical anchor
Street Fighter II is the clearest starting point for a history-minded list. Capcom says the game “defined the fighting game genre,” describing its character-based battles built around punches, kicks and special moves. Capcom’s 2017 30th-anniversary feature reported cumulative global sales of 6.3 million units. That figure belongs to the individual game and that dated report; it is not comparable to a later franchise-wide total.

Capcom’s Street Fighter 30th-anniversary feature supplies the historical case, while Game Informer’s retrospective also treats the game as a foundational reference point.
2. Mortal Kombat — a defining franchise with major commercial reach
Mortal Kombat earns a place as a major fighting-game tradition, not because a sales record alone determines quality, but because it is an unmistakable part of the genre’s landscape. Guinness World Records listed it as the best-selling fighting videogame series excluding crossovers as of 16 January 2024. That is a franchise record, not a single-game sales figure or an all-time quality ranking.

Guinness World Records’ series record states the scope and date of that claim.
3. Tekken — the 3D-fighter pillar
Tekken represents the 3D branch, where movement and positioning differ from the lane-based feel of a conventional 2D fighter. It is also a continuing major franchise: Guinness World Records reported more than 55 million series sales on its cited record page in 2024. That total is not directly comparable with Street Fighter II’s single-game figure.

For players choosing what to play in the current era, Tekken 8 appeared alongside Street Fighter 6 in PlayStation’s preview of Evo 2024. That is a dated tournament signal, not proof of permanent competitive status or an all-time ranking.
4. Soulcalibur — a weapon-based alternative
Soulcalibur broadens the list beyond punch-and-kick combat with its weapon-based fighting. It is a useful pick for readers who want a distinct movement and attack feel rather than another entry in the same traditional-fighter mold. Bandai Namco includes the series among its recognized fighting-game titles.

5. Dragon Ball FighterZ — anime-inspired team combat
Dragon Ball FighterZ represents the anime-inspired and team-fighter side of the genre. Its inclusion matters because team structure changes how players think about matchups and character choices compared with a single-character duel. Bandai Namco’s fighting-game feature includes the title among its recognized games.
6. Street Fighter 6 — a current-era Street Fighter
Street Fighter 6 is a contemporary example of the series that began with the historical anchor above. It belongs on a modern-facing list because it featured in PlayStation’s Evo 2024 preview and appears in 2026 editorial coverage of notable fighting games. These are snapshots of tournament and editorial attention, not evidence of a universal consensus or an enduring competitive ranking.

7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — the platform-fighter case
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate belongs if the definition includes platform fighters. Rather than winning through a conventional health-bar duel, the series’ distinctive objective is to knock opponents off the stage. TIME’s all-time games feature describes that structure, and the game appears in a 2026 GamesRadar list of notable fighting games. Its different rules make it a complement to traditional fighters, not a directly interchangeable alternative.

- For genre history: Start with Street Fighter II to see the game Capcom identifies as genre-defining.
- For 3D movement: Choose Tekken.
- For weapon-based combat: Try Soulcalibur.
- For team-based, anime-inspired fights: Consider Dragon Ball FighterZ.
- For a contemporary traditional-fighter example: Look at Street Fighter 6 or Tekken 8; their presence in an Evo 2024 preview is historical context, not a guarantee of current event status.
- For platform knockouts: Pick Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if that distinct format is what you want.
- For a major franchise recognized by sales records: Mortal Kombat has the Guinness record described above, though sales do not settle which installment is best for you.
Before buying, check the specific game’s supported platform, edition and online availability: those details vary by title and can change. A fight stick is optional, not a prerequisite; compatibility depends on the particular controller and platform, so verify both before purchasing an accessory.
