Best Fighting Games to Play If You Like Street Fighter 6

By VGSources Team 10 min read

TEKKEN 8 is the best starting point if you want to leave Street Fighter 6’s 2D-style battles for a 3D fighter. Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- for a distinctive 2.5D system, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising for fighting plus party and story modes, Mortal Kombat 1 for cinematic solo content and assist partners, or FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves for REV mechanics, two control schemes and an RPG-style campaign. None is an objectively superior replacement: the right choice depends on which parts of Street Fighter 6 you want to keep and which you want to change.

Street Fighter 6 itself combines three different experiences: traditional matches in Fighting Ground, the avatar-led World Tour and the social Battle Hub. Decide whether your priority is match structure, solo progression or an online hangout before buying another game.

What are you trying to preserve from Street Fighter 6?

If Fighting Ground is your priority

Start by comparing combat format rather than graphics or character count. Street Fighter 6’s Fighting Ground is the traditional fighting-game component. Guilty Gear -Strive-, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Mortal Kombat 1 and FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves remain closer to that broad 2D-style tradition, but each uses different rules. TEKKEN 8 is the deliberate format change: it is a 3D fighter, so spacing, sidestepping and arena movement become part of the decision-making.

#1 Best Overall
CD Bandai Games Tekken 8 for Playstation 5
  • Arcade Quest - In the new single-player mode ‘Arcade Quest’, players can create their own avatar and conquer their rivals in a variety of different arcades. This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches. .

If World Tour is what keeps you playing

Look for a game with a substantial progression or story mode. Mortal Kombat 1 offers a single-player Story mode and the Invasions progression mode. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising includes Story and Arcade modes. FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves has Episodes of South Town, an RPG-style single-player mode. These are different structures, not interchangeable versions of World Tour, so choose according to whether you want cinematic chapters, arcade routes or character-building progression.

If Battle Hub is the attraction

Online social features vary more than the match lists suggest. TEKKEN 8’s TEKKEN Fight Lounge is explicitly designed as an online place to interact and practice, and it lets you fight other players’ ghost data. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising advertises a large online lobby. FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves lists online ranked, casual and room matches, replays, cross-platform play and AI-generated clones. These feature descriptions do not prove that one community is larger or that one game’s connections are better; they tell you what kinds of online activities are offered.

TEKKEN 8: the clearest move to 3D combat

Choose TEKKEN 8 when you are comfortable changing the basic geometry of a fight. Instead of staying on a mostly horizontal 2D-style lane, you manage movement in a 3D arena. That makes it an alternative rather than a direct substitute for Street Fighter 6’s Fighting Ground.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it fits

  • The TEKKEN Fight Lounge provides an online social and practice environment.
  • Local multiplayer supports one or two players, useful for same-device sessions.
  • You can fight other players’ ghost data, creating a way to practice against recorded opponent behavior.

What to expect when switching

Your Street Fighter 6 fundamentals still help with timing, defense and matchup study, but you will need to learn 3D movement and the game’s own attack and spacing conventions. Do not buy it expecting your existing character knowledge or control habits to transfer unchanged. Its appeal is precisely the new combat format and the lounge-based social experience.

Best for

Pick TEKKEN 8 if your answer to “What should change?” is “the whole shape of the fight,” while you still want online interaction and local play.

Guilty Gear -Strive-: a stylized 2.5D system

Arc System Works describes Guilty Gear -Strive- as the latest entry in its long-running series and identifies it as a 2.5D fighter. That label signals a two-dimensional fighting structure presented with three-dimensional visuals, but it should not be read as a Street Fighter 6 clone. Its characters, movement rules and resource decisions belong to the Guilty Gear system.

Tekken 8 [PS5]
  • TEKKEN 8, the brand new part of the legendary TEKKEN range, brings the battle to a new generation!
  • TEKKEN 8 continues the tragic saga of the Mishima bloodline and their world-moving battles between father and son.
  • With a variety of single-player content, such as the all-new Arcade Quest mode and a comprehensive customization system for characters and avatars, TEKKEN 8 offers the most exciting experience yet.

The key system to learn

The official battle-systems information presents the Tension Gauge as a central resource for universal mechanics. You therefore manage more than immediate attack and defense: building and spending Tension is part of the game’s shared decision framework. Learn what actions consume or benefit from the gauge before judging the game from your first matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it fits

  • The 2.5D presentation offers a strong visual change without moving to a fully 3D arena.
  • The Tension Gauge gives every character access to a common layer of strategic resource management.
  • It suits players who want a game-specific system rather than a familiar Street Fighter-style translation.

Best for

Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- if you want a new identity, presentation and battle system while keeping the broad side-on fighter format.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: fighting, story and party play

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is designed for players who do not want every session to be a standard versus set. Cygames lists fighting and party as its genres and advertises Story, Arcade and Training modes, a large online lobby and the party mode Grand Bruise Legends.

Modes that broaden the package

  • Story: a solo option for players who want context and progression around their matches.
  • Arcade: a traditional route-based way to play through fights.
  • Training: a dedicated place to practice before returning online.
  • Online lobby: a larger social space than a simple matchmaking menu.
  • Grand Bruise Legends: a party-game mode for a different type of session.

Edition warning

The official features information warns that a listed feature is not available in the Free Edition. If Grand Bruise Legends, a story feature or another advertised item is the reason you are interested, verify that the edition you are downloading includes it. “Available on the page” and “included in this edition” are not necessarily the same thing.

Platforms

Cygames lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam. Confirm current regional support and the exact edition on your chosen platform, because store offerings can change.

Mortal Kombat 1: cinematic solo play and Kameo assists

Mortal Kombat 1 is the strongest fit here for a player who values a cinematic single-player campaign and a partner-assist mechanic. Its official FAQ identifies Story mode, the Invasions progression mode and Kameo Fighters.

How Kameo Fighters differ from a normal roster

You choose a Kameo Fighter separately from the main roster. The Kameo character assists during matches, so team construction includes a partner decision without replacing your primary fighter. This is a meaningful system change from selecting one Street Fighter 6 character and relying on that character’s own toolkit.

Solo options

  • Story mode: a directed, cinematic campaign.
  • Invasions: a progression mode that provides a different solo structure from a conventional arcade ladder.

Edition and DLC checks

The FAQ lists expansions, downloadable content and a Definitive Edition Upgrade. It does not make every store bundle identical. Compare the contents of the actual platform-specific edition before paying, especially if you want the story expansion or additional fighters. Prices are intentionally not stated because they change by region, platform and promotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for

Choose Mortal Kombat 1 if your replacement must deliver a story-first solo experience and you like the idea of selecting an assist partner separately from your main character.

FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves: REV mechanics, two controls and RPG progression

FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves targets players who want a fighter with a distinct risk-and-reward layer and a separate solo progression mode. SNK highlights its REV system, two control schemes and Episodes of South Town, an RPG-style single-player mode.

Arcade Style and Smart Style

The two schemes address different input preferences:

This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches.
  • Built for Personalisation - With a wide variety of customisations to playable characters, avatars, HUD elements, and music – players can tailor their experience to their own personal preferences. There is more freedom in customisation options than ever before for playable characters.
  • Arcade Style is based on precise, technical inputs.
  • Smart Style lets you perform flashy special moves and combos with directional inputs and single-button presses.

These are in-game control options, not evidence that you need an additional controller. They let you decide how much execution complexity you want while learning the game’s mechanics.

Modes and online features

The official game-modes listing includes training, tutorial, online ranked, casual and room matches, rollback netcode, cross-platform play, replays and AI-generated clones. It also lists Episodes of South Town for RPG-style solo progression. Feature availability can depend on platform and service status, so confirm the current listing when you buy.

Demo and Nintendo Switch 2 timing

In an announcement dated September 30, 2026, SNK described a demo with six characters and Arcade, Classic Versus, Training, Tutorial, Trial and Color Edit modes. The same announcement scheduled a Nintendo Switch 2 version for late October 2026. Because both the demo offering and release timing are date-sensitive, check SNK’s current announcement and your regional store rather than treating those details as permanent.

Best for

Pick FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves if you want a fighter that lets you choose between technical and assisted inputs, learn a REV-based system and spend time in an RPG-style solo mode.

How the alternatives compare by decision

Combat format

  • Want 3D? TEKKEN 8 is the clear choice.
  • Want side-on combat with a new presentation? Guilty Gear -Strive- offers a 2.5D approach.
  • Want a 2D-style fighter with varied surrounding modes? Consider Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Mortal Kombat 1 or FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, then decide based on their systems and solo content.

Controls and onboarding

Street Fighter 6 players should distinguish between a game’s control scheme and its hardware requirements. FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves explicitly offers Arcade Style and Smart Style. The other games in this guide have their own input conventions, but the listed evidence does not establish that any requires a special fight stick or extra pad. Use the built-in tutorials and training modes where available before buying hardware.

A practical selection process

  1. Name the part of Street Fighter 6 you use most. Choose Fighting Ground, World Tour or Battle Hub as your baseline.
  2. Choose your format boundary. Decide whether a 3D fighter is appealing, whether 2.5D presentation is enough of a change, or whether you want to stay with a side-on structure.
  3. Pick the system you want to learn. TEKKEN 8 changes movement format; Guilty Gear -Strive- centers its universal Tension Gauge; Mortal Kombat 1 adds Kameo partners; FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves uses REV mechanics and alternate controls.
  4. Match the solo mode to your available time. Select Story, Invasions, Episodes of South Town, arcade routes or training according to whether you want narrative, progression or practice.
  5. Verify the edition. Check whether the Free Edition of Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising includes the feature you want and whether a Mortal Kombat 1 bundle contains the expansions or fighters you expect.
  6. Verify platform and region. Confirm the current store page, online-service requirements, cross-play scope and release status for your device.
  7. Use a demo or trial when offered. The FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves demo announcement lists six characters and several modes, but availability can change; check the current listing first.

Purchase and expectation checklist

  • Match the game to your actual platform: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Steam or another supported system.
  • Read the edition contents instead of assuming the base game includes every expansion, DLC character or mode.
  • Check regional pricing and availability at checkout; no universal price applies across stores.
  • Confirm whether online features require an active platform subscription.
  • Do not infer community size, netcode quality, balance or overall superiority from a publisher’s feature list.
  • Remember that a listed control scheme does not mean an additional controller is required.

What the official descriptions do—and do not—establish

The information available for these games establishes their modes, systems, control options and selected platform details. It does not provide a controlled comparison of balance, input latency, matchmaking population, competitive tier quality, sales or long-term player retention. Treat “best” as a fit decision: the best game is the one whose combat format, learning curve, solo structure and online features match your priorities.
