Battlefield 6 is the strongest all-around pick among the 2025 first-person shooters covered here, especially if you want team-based multiplayer and large-scale combat. That is an editorial judgment, not a universal consensus: GamesRadar+ ranked it first in its year-end FPS list, and PlayStation Universe named it Best First-Person Shooter in its 2025 awards. For a fast solo campaign, try DOOM: The Dark Ages; for loot and build crafting, consider Borderlands 4.
How this 2025 FPS guide defines eligibility
This guide focuses on games released in 2025 that are played primarily from a first-person perspective. Release-year lists can differ depending on whether they count a game’s first public version or its later full release. That distinction matters for Escape from Tarkov and Ready or Not: both had playable versions before 2025, while their 1.0 releases came in 2025. They belong on a list using a full-release rule, but not necessarily on one limited to first public releases.
Genre also matters. Some year-end “shooter” lists include third-person games and other titles that are not primarily first-person. This guide filters for the FPS focus rather than treating every shooter as an FPS. The available sources do not establish a uniform head-to-head review method, so the recommendations below are organized around what each game offers rather than a claimed objective score.
Best FPS games of 2025 by play style
| Game | Best fit | What stands out | Platforms established by cited sources |

| Metal Eden | Compact arena action | Fast movement, arena combat, and a sci-fi setting | PS5, PC, Xbox Series X (GamesRadar+) |
| Escape from Tarkov | High-stakes extraction play | Extraction-focused FPS play; its 2025 1.0 release qualifies under a full-release rule | PC (GamesRadar+) |
| Ready or Not | Realistic SWAT simulation | GameSpot describes it as a realistic first-person SWAT simulation; its 1.0 release makes it a candidate under a full-release rule | Not stated in the cited source details |
| Atomfall | Another award-recognized 2025 FPS to investigate | PlayStation Universe named it a runner-up; the cited material does not establish enough gameplay detail for a more specific recommendation | Not stated in the cited source details |
Battlefield 6: the best pick for team-based warfare
Choose Battlefield 6 if the appeal of an FPS is coordinating with teammates across larger battles, rather than concentrating on a solo campaign or a loot treadmill. GamesRadar+ highlighted its urban long-range fighting, varied arsenal, map design, and team play. The same outlet ranked it first in its year-end FPS list, while PlayStation Universe named it Best First-Person Shooter in its own 2025 awards. Those are two distinct editorial judgments, not a universal ranking or a measured consensus.

Borderlands 4: the pick for loot and build crafting
Borderlands 4 combines first-person gunplay with loot and build choices. GamesRadar+ points to its modular perks, while the cited coverage characterizes its tone as colorful and chaotic. It is a sensible option if experimenting with gear and character builds matters as much as moment-to-moment shooting. PlayStation Universe also named it a runner-up in its 2025 Best FPS award.
Other notable 2025 FPS options
Metal Eden
GamesRadar+ describes Metal Eden as a short arena FPS built around fast movement and a sci-fi setting. That makes it the compact-action alternative in this selection. GamesRadar+ lists PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.

Escape from Tarkov
Escape from Tarkov is a PC extraction FPS centered on high-stakes extraction play, according to GamesRadar+, which ranked it second in its year-end list. Its eligibility depends on the list’s release rule: it had playable versions before 2025, but its 1.0 release arrived that year.
Ready or Not
GameSpot describes Ready or Not as a realistic first-person SWAT simulation and references its 1.0 release. Count it if “released in 2025” means a full release; leave it out if you mean games whose first public versions appeared in 2025.

What “best” means in this list
Battlefield 6 has the strongest year-end recognition among the cited sources: GamesRadar+ put it first, and PlayStation Universe gave it that outlet’s Best FPS award. This is a source-based reason to make it the lead recommendation, not proof that every player or critic agrees. There is no consistent head-to-head scoring method in the cited coverage, and no verified, directly sourced review-score comparison is used here. Your best choice still depends on whether you value team play, fast solo combat, loot progression, arena movement, extraction stakes, or tactical simulation.
