The best FC 25 free-agent targets depend on when you need them: players unattached at the start can be approached in the first season, while contract-expiry names are only possible future opportunities. For immediate quality, the first-season lists include Adrien Rabiot (83), Joselu (82) and Memphis Depay (82). For a later window, the watchlist includes Kevin De Bruyne, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. Treat every name as a candidate, not a guarantee: squad updates and individual saves can change player status.
How free agents and contract-expiry players differ
A free agent is unattached to a club and can be approached without negotiating a transfer fee, though wages and bonuses still matter. A contract-expiry target is still contracted: guides describe these players as having a year or less remaining, and FC 25 managers may be able to negotiate during that final contract year. A player may join after the contract ends if negotiations succeed; neither availability nor a successful deal is guaranteed. See the explanations from Charlie INTEL and Dexerto.

Best first-season free agents
Dexerto’s FC 25 list supplies useful first-season candidates and their listed overall ratings. The ratings are guide figures, not a guarantee that your save’s squad data matches:
| Position | Players and listed ratings |
|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Carlos Acevedo (77) |
| Defenders | Romain Saiss (78); Cesar Montes (74); Israel Reyes (74); Ivan Perisic (76); Gerardo Arteaga (74) |
| Midfielders | Adrien Rabiot (83); Luis Chavez (79); Erick Sanchez (78); Samuel Gustafson (75) |
| Winger | Akram Afif (78) |
| Forwards | Joselu (82); Memphis Depay (82) |
For immediate midfield impact, Rabiot is the standout by listed overall rating in this selection. Forwards Joselu and Depay are also high-rated options. These are shortlist suggestions based on the guide’s categories and ratings, not results from gameplay testing. Dexerto’s list was updated September 3, 2025.

Younger options with potential
India Today Gaming highlights several players who may suit a longer save. Its figures pair current overall rating with potential:
| Player | Rating | Potential |
|---|---|---|
| Erick Sanchez | 78 | 83 |
| Jesus Orozco Chiquete | 72 | 82 |
| Cesar Huerta | 75 | 81 |
| Marcelo Flores | 71 | 81 |
These rating and potential figures come from India Today Gaming’s FC 25 guide. They can help identify development prospects, but potential is not the same as guaranteed growth in a particular career.

Contract-expiry players to watch in later seasons
These players appear in Dexerto’s later-season contract-expiry table. They are not necessarily free at the start, and the listing does not promise they will still be available when you reach a later window.
| Position | Players and listed ratings |
|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | David De Gea (84) |
| Defenders | Virgil van Dijk (89); Jonathan Tah (86); Ferland Mendy (84); Alphonso Davies (82); Trent Alexander-Arnold (86) |
| Midfielders | Kevin De Bruyne (91); Ilkay Gundogan (87); Joshua Kimmich (86); Paulo Dybala (87) |
| Wingers | Neymar Jr (87); Mohamed Salah (89); Lionel Messi (88) |
| Strikers | Heung-Min Son (87); Victor Osimhen (87); Cristiano Ronaldo (86) |
India Today Gaming’s second-season list corroborates several names and gives rating/potential pairs: De Bruyne (90/90), Salah (89/89), Van Dijk (89/89), Osimhen (87/89), Messi (88/88) and Son (87/87). De Bruyne’s overall rating differs between the two guides (91 at Dexerto, 90 at India Today Gaming), so use the figures as source-specific FC 25 reference points rather than a universal current rating.

How to choose a target for your club
- Fit the position and role: prioritize a player who fills a real gap in your squad rather than choosing solely by overall rating.
- Balance immediate ability and development: current overall can help with a short-term need; age and listed potential may matter more in a longer save.
- Check the full cost: a free transfer does not mean a cost-free signing. Confirm wages and bonuses in your save; the guides do not establish what a particular club can afford.
- Account for timing and certainty: distinguish an unattached player you can approach now from a player whose contract may expire later.
For example, Rabiot is a possible immediate midfield option based on Dexerto’s first-season listing, while De Bruyne or Kimmich belong on a later contract-expiry watchlist. Those recommendations follow the guides’ categories and listed ratings, not firsthand gameplay testing.

FC 25 player data is edition-specific, and availability can vary with squad data. EA advises downloading squad updates for the latest transfers and player ratings: “You’ll be prompted to download the Squad updates to get the latest transfers, Player ratings, and more.” Read EA’s Career Mode guide, then check the player’s status in your own save before building a plan around a signing. EA’s FC 25 Player Ratings Reveal is also specifically for FC 25; avoid substituting ratings or real-world club status from newer editions.
