Rocket League, Fortnite, and Apex Legends are strong starting points across different genres; Overwatch is another option, but its detailed crossplay guidance here comes from a 2021 announcement and should be checked against current support information. Crossplay lets people on different supported systems play together; it does not by itself mean saves or purchases transfer between them.
Free crossplay games worth checking first

Rocket League: quick competitive matches
Rocket League is a good fit for short, competitive car-soccer matches. Epic Games Support documents cross-platform matchmaking across the Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. It also supports private matches with friends on other platforms, making it a useful choice for groups that want a closed lobby.
Crossplay is enabled by default. Epic says turning it off may increase matchmaking time, so check the setting only if your group has a specific reason to limit cross-platform play.

Fortnite: multiple kinds of play
Fortnite offers more than one experience, including Battle Royale, racing, and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. Epic describes Fortnite as a cross-platform and crossplay title; TechRadar reports Battle Royale availability across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and mobile. Because availability can differ by device and experience, verify that everyone can access the same mode on their chosen platform.
Apex Legends: team-based battle royale
EA lists Apex Legends as free to download and play on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the EA App or Steam. EA also lists an EA account and persistent internet connection as requirements, notes age restrictions and in-game purchases, and says a platform subscription may be required. Check the conditions that apply to your platform and region.

Overwatch: check current setup details
Blizzard’s crossplay announcement identifies PC, Xbox One and Series consoles, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Switch. It describes account linking for console players, but the announcement dates to 2021; treat its detailed setup and progression guidance as historical unless current Blizzard support confirms it. Blizzard also distinguished crossplay from carrying progression and collection content between sessions on different platforms.
How to choose for your group
- Check the exact pairing. A game being available on several platforms does not prove that every pair can join the same session. Verify the platforms and the specific mode each person plans to use.
- Match the play style. Choose Rocket League for car-soccer matches, Fortnite for its range of experiences, or Apex Legends for team-based battle royale.
- Decide whether you need a private lobby. Rocket League officially supports private cross-platform matches. For other games, check their current official instructions rather than assuming private crossplay works the same way.
- Check accounts and possible costs. Free-to-play does not rule out account requirements, persistent internet, age limits, in-game purchases, or a platform subscription. EA lists these qualifications for Apex Legends.
- Separate crossplay from cross-save. Crossplay is about playing together across systems. If you want your save or inventory to follow you between devices, check that game’s separate progression or cross-save rules.
- Review crossplay settings. Some games have controls that affect cross-platform matchmaking. In Rocket League, crossplay is on by default, and disabling it may increase queue time.
Where to find more options
Microsoft’s Xbox Store has a changing filtered category for free games with cross-platform multiplayer, including titles such as Rocket League, Apex Legends, and Fall Guys. Its listings can vary by region and date; use the store category to discover candidates, then confirm the exact platform pairing on the game’s official page.
