Choose a PDF if you want to print or work outside a browser; choose the online sheet if you want guided creation and digital management. “Custom” can mean a personalized online appearance or a redesigned PDF, and those are different things.

Printable PDF
Choose a printable sheet if you prefer to write by hand or want a copy at the table. D&D Beyond’s resource page lists downloadable PDFs and says they may be printed and photocopied for personal use. Check the specific file’s label so you pick a sheet that matches your edition and table’s rules.
Fillable PDF
A fillable PDF lets you enter information on a device without managing the character in an online tool. D&D Beyond lists a Fillable Character Sheet among its downloads. Its support documentation also says a character sheet can be exported as a PDF for use outside the service: PDF export instructions.
Online character sheet
An online sheet suits players who want guided character creation and digital management in one place. D&D Beyond describes its builder as a guided way to create a character and receive a digital sheet. The free options are limited to material available in the Basic Rules, rather than every D&D character option.

How to choose a sheet that matches your rules
- Confirm the ruleset. If your game uses the revised 2024 character rules, start with the sheet identified as the 2024 Character Sheet. For fifth-edition play using earlier rules, review the broader Fifth Edition and fillable options on the official resource page.
- Pick the working format. Decide whether you want a paper copy, a fillable PDF, or an online sheet. Downloads and online tools are both listed among D&D Beyond’s official resources.
- Separate appearance from layout. Online visual options such as a portrait, frame, theme, or backdrop change how the digital sheet looks; they do not create a redesigned PDF layout.
- Check content access before building. D&D Beyond’s support article says free character creation includes Basic Rules options. For options outside those rules, it lists purchase through the Marketplace or access through a campaign with content sharing enabled and a member who owns the content. The support article cautions that its documentation may not fully reflect the current builder experience, so verify the choices shown in the builder.
- Consider portability. If you need to use a digital character away from the service, the support documentation describes exporting a sheet as a PDF.
What “custom” means—and what to verify in community sheets
Custom can refer to three separate things: an online sheet with a personalized appearance, a fillable version of an existing layout, or an unofficial sheet redesigned by a community creator. The official appearance controls cover the first; a fillable PDF covers the second. Neither guarantees the bespoke layout or rules changes some players may want.
Community-made sheets can be useful when the official layout does not suit your table, but the available example does not verify any particular design’s present-day download access, upkeep, permission terms, or compatibility with the 2024 rules. Before using one, check that it is accessible from its creator, permitted for your intended use, and built for the ruleset your group plays. Avoid treating an old post as proof that a file is still available or current.
