If you’ve finished a solo shooter and want a free PC game built around other players, choose by match style: Counter-Strike 2 for weapon-focused tactical rounds, VALORANT for rounds with agent abilities, Team Fortress 2 for class-based team play, or Apex Legends for squad battle royale. All four are free to start, but their multiplayer loops—and the skills they reward—are quite different.

Pick a tactical shooter: Counter-Strike 2 or VALORANT
Both games center on coordinated, round-based team play, making them natural choices if you want a deliberate pace rather than a solo campaign’s scripted encounters. The main distinction is whether you want the gunplay to stand mostly on its own or to share the spotlight with character abilities.
Counter-Strike 2: keep the focus on weapons and rounds
Valve describes Counter-Strike 2 as a free-to-play, multiplayer, team-based FPS and a free upgrade to Counter-Strike. Its current Steam listing also includes Rush, a fast 3v3 mode. Steam Support says free players can access all game modes and matchmaking types except Premier Mode, which requires Prime Status. Choose it if you want tactical team rounds with a direct emphasis on weapon play, while keeping that Premier restriction in mind. VALORANT: add agent abilities to tactical gunplay
Riot describes VALORANT as a free 5v5 tactical shooter. Its official page describes attack-and-defend play across 13 rounds, with one life per round, and lists Competitive, Unranked, Deathmatch and Spike Rush. Agents have distinct abilities, so team tactics include more than weapon choice alone. Pick VALORANT if that extra layer of character-specific tools sounds appealing. Choose a different team loop: classes or battle royale
If short, deliberate rounds aren’t what you’re after, these two options offer more distinct alternatives. Team Fortress 2 organizes multiplayer around classes; Apex Legends makes squad survival across larger maps the central format.

Team Fortress 2: class-led multiplayer
Valve’s Steam listing calls Team Fortress 2 a free-to-play, class-based multiplayer FPS and notes updates with game modes, maps and equipment. That class-led structure gives it a different flavor from the round-based tactical choices above. To get it, install Steam and download the game; Valve’s free-to-play FAQ also describes routes to premium account status, including a store purchase. Apex Legends is the battle royale pick: choose it if you want squad-based survival matches across larger maps instead of short tactical rounds. EA says the PC game is free to download and play through the EA app and Steam. EA also publishes PC system requirements and says its recommended specifications are intended for smooth 60 fps gameplay. That target is EA’s stated aim for the recommended specs, not a guarantee for every PC; compare your hardware with the current requirements before downloading. How to choose after a single-player shooter
- Want tactical rounds with a straightforward focus on weapons? Start with Counter-Strike 2.
- Want tactical rounds plus character abilities? Try VALORANT.

All four move the experience from solo play to online multiplayer, so matchmaking and playing with or against other people are part of the change. A headset with a microphone is optional for voice chat, not a requirement established by the game listings.
