If Eyes Without a Face left you wanting more cool, unsettling French cinema, start with Georges Franju’s La Tête contre les murs for a closely related atmosphere. For a different kind of dread, choose Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques; for a more overtly gothic turn, try Jess Franco’s Le Diabolique docteur Z. These are distinct paths from Franju’s film, not an objective ranking.
Why these films pair with Eyes Without a Face
Georges Franju’s Les Yeux sans visage is a French-language horror feature from 1960. The Bibliothèque nationale de France lists its first French theatrical release as 11 March 1960. BnF catalogue record. La Cinémathèque française identifies it as a France-Italy production, directed by Franju, running 88 minutes and adapted from Jean Redon’s novel; its premise follows a surgeon who kidnaps young women to graft their skin onto his disfigured daughter’s face. La Cinémathèque française film record.
Part of its particular unease comes from the contrast between Eugen Schüfftan’s deep blacks and dazzling whites, a visual quality the Cinémathèque highlights alongside the film’s place as a reference point in French horror. La Cinémathèque française. The recommendations below follow three different ways to continue: stay near Franju’s institutional atmosphere, trade bodily horror for psychological suspense, or move toward gothic revenge.
For another dose of Franju atmosphere: La Tête contre les murs (1958)
Choose this first if what stayed with you was the oppressive calm and unsettling realism rather than the surgical horror. Franju’s earlier feature follows François Gérane, a young man committed to a psychiatric asylum by his authoritarian father, as he tries to escape with another inmate.

La Cinémathèque française describes the film’s oppressive atmosphere, expressionist black-and-white cinematography and baroque score, and explicitly says it anticipates Eyes Without a Face. La Cinémathèque française film record. It is not a conventional body-horror story: its source of dread is confinement and institutional power. That makes it the closest choice here in director and mood, but not in plot or gruesome imagery.
For psychological suspense: Les Diaboliques (1954)
Pick Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques when you want paranoia and suspense rather than a close visual match for Franju. The film adapts Boileau and Narcejac’s Celle qui n’était plus: a school director terrorizes his wife and mistress, who conspire to kill him, and strange events follow. For gothic revenge and a mad-scientist mood: Le Diabolique docteur Z (1965)

Franju’s own description offers a useful way to understand why tenderness and terror can coexist in his horror: “C’est la tendresse qui donne le ton à l’épouvante.” The English translation is “It is tenderness that gives horror its tone.” The quotation appears in a Cinémathèque française oral history dated 7 March 2022, which also presents recollections from cast and crew.
