If you want a short list of Game Boy Color games that captures the system’s identity, start with Pokémon Gold and Silver, the two The Legend of Zelda: Oracle games, and Link’s Awakening DX. Together they show how the handheld carried familiar Nintendo play into more expansive adventures and a distinct color-era catalog. The picks below are a considered selection, not an objective ranking: each earns its place by showing a different strength of the system.
What makes a Game Boy Color game generation-defining?
“Best” depends on what you want from the system. For this selection, the useful tests are what a game contributes to its genre or series, the mechanic or structure that makes it distinctive, whether it was built for the Game Boy Color era or reintroduced an earlier Game Boy game, and how practical it is to play today.
The result is a representative list rather than a scorecard. It leans on role-playing and adventure games because those titles make the era’s longer, more connected play easy to see, then adds a puzzle classic and a later Pokémon entry for contrast. Other editorial rankings make different choices; they are useful comparisons, not proof of a universal canon. Nintendo Life’s selection and GamesRadar+’s ranking are examples of that editorial variety.
Pokémon Gold and Silver: the essential RPG anchor
Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver are the clearest starting point if you want to understand the Game Boy Color’s role-playing side. The Pokémon Company describes them as among the first mainstream RPGs for the system and highlights three additions: 100 Pokémon, held items, and an internal clock that enabled real-time events. Those features give the games a world that feels more connected to time and collecting than a simple sequence of battles. The Pokémon Company’s overview supports those specifics.

#1 Best Overall
- New and high quality
- Compatible for both US/EU/JAP versions console.
- RPG games can be saved by the battery inside, but Action games have no saving function.
- 61 in 1
- GBC games can't play on the GB game console
The launch date needs a regional qualifier: Nintendo’s history records 6 April 2001 as the simultaneous European launch date for the pair. That is not a global release date. Nintendo UK’s history entry documents the European date.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons: a two-part adventure
The two Oracle games belong together in a recommendation, but they are not interchangeable. Nintendo’s account of Oracle of Seasons emphasizes its defining idea: changing seasons alter the landscape, and those changes shape the puzzles. That mechanic makes the world itself part of the problem-solving. Nintendo says both Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons originally released for Game Boy Color in 2001. Nintendo’s Oracle of Seasons page gives the platform, year, and season-based premise.
Rank #2
- New and high quality.
- Compatible for both US/EU/JAP versions console.
- RPG games can be saved by the battery inside, but Action games have no saving function.
- 108 in 1
- GBC games can't play on the GB game console
The pair is also often discussed as a linked release rather than two unrelated entries; GamesRadar+ describes their distinct themes and a linked follow-on experience. Treat that as editorial context rather than a substitute for a detailed mechanics guide. The practical recommendation is straightforward: choose the one whose premise appeals more, or seek both if you want the paired experience. GamesRadar+’s ranking discusses the pair in that frame.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX: a Game Boy classic in the color-era catalog
Link’s Awakening DX represents a different path into the generation: a Game Boy classic presented in a Game Boy/Game Boy Color collection. Nintendo Australia’s Game Boy/Nintendo Classics catalog lists the DX edition, making it a concrete option for players checking Nintendo’s current classic-game offerings. The catalog listing alone does not establish every difference between the DX edition and the earlier release, so this recommendation rests on its place in the catalog rather than an unsourced feature comparison. Check Nintendo Australia’s live classics catalog for current inclusion.

Tetris DX and Pokémon Crystal: useful extensions to the shortlist
Tetris DX
Add Tetris DX if you want a puzzle-game counterpoint to the longer adventures. Nintendo Life includes it in its editorial selection, which supports it as a worthwhile shortlist candidate but does not establish technical details or a particular historical distinction. See Nintendo Life’s list for that editorial recommendation.
Pokémon Crystal
Pokémon Crystal broadens the Pokémon side of the list beyond Gold and Silver. Nintendo Life also includes it in its ranking, so it can serve as an additional option for readers exploring the later Pokémon-era selection. The ranking is a recommendation, not evidence for specific feature or release-history claims. Nintendo Life’s list provides the editorial cross-check.

How to play these games now
On original hardware, look for the specific Game Boy Color cartridge and check the game/version, region, listing authenticity, and cartridge condition before buying. Used availability and prices vary, so a recommendation is not a guarantee that a particular cartridge is easy to find.
If you do not have original hardware, Nintendo’s Switch-family classic-games pages list selected Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles through Nintendo Switch Online. That does not mean every game in this article is currently included. Check the live catalog and service terms for the specific title and region before relying on a modern re-release route. Nintendo Australia’s Nintendo Switch Online classics page lists selected catalog titles, and its contents may change.
