OBS Studio was the best overall game recording software in 2024, thanks to its free, open-source model, hardware-encoder support, replay buffer, multi-source capture, separate audio tracks, webcam scenes, and streaming tools. It takes more setup than one-click recorders, though. NVIDIA users wanting instant clips should start with ShadowPlay or NVIDIA App capture; Radeon owners have AMD Adrenalin; Windows beginners have Xbox Game Bar; and Steam users gained Steam Game Recording during 2024.

The right choice depends on whether you want full-session footage, instant replays, automatic highlights, livestream production, or simple sharing. This guide separates those jobs instead of pretending every recorder is interchangeable.

  • Replay-buffer tools continuously retain recent footage and save it only after you press a hotkey.
  • Streaming suites add scenes, transitions, webcams, alerts, capture cards, and multiple audio sources.
  • Automatic-highlight tools attempt to detect kills, wins, rounds, or other events.
  • Platform-integrated recorders are built into Windows, NVIDIA software, AMD software, or Steam.
  • General screen recorders can capture a desktop tutorial but may lack game-specific capture and replay features.

That distinction matters. Comparing OBS directly with a one-button clipping utility is like comparing video-editing software with a camera shortcut: both produce video, but they solve different problems.

How to judge a recorder

  1. Capture quality: check supported resolution, frame rate, HDR behavior, codecs such as H.264, HEVC, or AV1, and available quality controls.
  2. Performance: look at the encoder, GPU and CPU load, and frame-time consistency—not just average FPS.
  3. Replay features: check buffer length, whether it starts automatically, hotkey behavior, and support for fullscreen, borderless, desktop, or protected applications.
  4. Audio: verify game audio, microphone selection, Discord or application audio, and whether tracks can be separated for editing.
  5. Production tools: scenes, webcam overlays, text, alerts, transitions, multiple sources, and capture-card support.
  6. Ease of use: consider installation, default quality, hotkey conflicts, and how clearly the settings are explained.
  7. Compatibility: check GPU brand, operating system, rendering API, emulator support, and anti-cheat behavior.
8. File workflow: inspect formats, file size, save location, editing compatibility, and sharing options.
  9. Cost: distinguish free software from watermarks, time limits, cloud-storage limits, accounts, or export restrictions.
  10. Reliability: test alt-tab behavior, overlays, microphone selection, crash recovery, and whether clips are actually saved after stopping.

Best overall: OBS Studio

OBS Studio is the best overall choice and the best option for streamers. It supports Game Capture, window and display capture, capture cards, multiple desktop-audio and microphone devices, recording hotkeys, Replay Buffer, and hardware encoders including NVENC, AMD VCE, and Quick Sync when available. Advanced output mode also supports multiple audio tracks. See the official OBS Studio overview for the documented feature set.

Why OBS wins

  • It works across NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel systems rather than locking the workflow to one GPU brand.
  • It can record a complete session or save only the last moments with Replay Buffer.
  • It handles webcam layouts, alerts, overlays, capture cards, and livestream scenes.
  • Separate audio tracks make later editing easier.
  • It is free and open source, with no recorder watermark or paid license requirement.

Basic OBS recording setup

  1. Open Settings → Output and choose a recording path.
  2. Select a recording quality preset appropriate for your storage and editing workflow.
  3. Choose a hardware encoder if your system provides one: NVENC for compatible NVIDIA GPUs, AMD hardware encoding for compatible Radeon systems, or Quick Sync on supported Intel hardware.
  4. Open the main OBS window, add a Game Capture source, and select the game.
  5. Add desktop audio and microphone sources. Confirm the meters move when the game and microphone are active.
  6. Use Settings → Video to select output resolution and frame rate.
  7. Assign Start/Stop Recording hotkeys under Settings → Hotkeys.
  8. Make a short test recording before starting a long session.

Using OBS Replay Buffer

  1. Open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer.
  2. Set the buffer duration.
  3. Under Settings → Hotkeys, assign Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer, and Save Replay Buffer hotkeys.
  4. Start the buffer before playing, then press Save Replay Buffer after an unexpected moment.

A replay buffer continuously overwrites older footage. It saves only the retained period when triggered, so it must be running before the event. A long, high-quality buffer uses memory, temporary storage, and disk space, and footage may be lost if the application crashes before saving.

OBS trade-offs

OBS is not automatically the lowest-overhead recorder on every PC. Results depend on encoder, preset, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, game engine, capture method, and whether you are streaming and recording at the same time. Its advantage is control and adaptability, not a universal performance guarantee.

If Game Capture shows a black screen, verify that OBS and the game are using the intended GPU. OBS’s GPU selection guide specifically warns that capture can fail when OBS runs on an integrated GPU while the game runs on a discrete GPU.

Best for NVIDIA GPUs: ShadowPlay and NVIDIA App capture

NVIDIA capture is the easiest choice for GeForce owners who mainly want instant replays. The familiar ShadowPlay name refers to capture features that NVIDIA has moved into newer software, including the NVIDIA App. Because labels and capabilities changed during the transition, check the software version rather than assuming every “ShadowPlay” guide describes the same interface.

Historically, the overlay opened with Alt+Z. NVIDIA documentation describes Instant Replay, manual recording, and capture settings; cited GeForce Experience material describes recording up to 4K at 60 FPS under supported configurations. The 2024 NVIDIA App beta also added AV1 capture up to 120 FPS for supported hardware and exposed an adjustable Instant Replay length. See NVIDIA’s capture documentation and 2024 NVIDIA App update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic workflow

  1. Open the NVIDIA overlay with Alt+Z, where supported.
  2. Enable Instant Replay.
  3. Choose replay duration, quality, resolution, frame rate, microphone, and save location.
  4. Use the configured shortcut to save the recent buffer.
  5. Use manual Record when you want the entire session.

It is faster to configure than OBS and uses NVIDIA hardware encoding where supported. Its weaknesses are hardware dependence and less flexible audio and production control. It is not the best fit for complex webcam scenes, multiple audio tracks, alerts, or a full broadcast layout.

Best for AMD GPUs: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is the natural built-in recorder for Radeon users. Its Record feature supports gameplay capture, configurable hotkeys, microphone selection, save-location control, and Instant Replay.

AMD’s support material documents Instant Replay as continuously recording gameplay and retaining up to the last 20 minutes, with shorter durations adjustable in 15-second increments. That is a documented maximum in the cited material, not a promise that every system or installation exposes identical settings. The support article is based on Adrenalin 23.9.1 and was updated November 11, 2024, so menu names can differ in other releases. See AMD’s Record and Instant Replay support page.

Basic workflow

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Search for Hotkey Settings and open the result.
  3. Configure media hotkeys.
  4. Open Record settings and select profile, resolution, frame rate, audio, and save location.
  5. Enable Instant Replay if you want to save moments after they happen.
  6. Assign a save-replay hotkey.

Adrenalin is simpler than OBS for Radeon users but is less suitable for multi-source streaming, advanced scenes, and production audio. AMD also warns that gameplay files can be very large, so check the free space in the configured save directory before recording.

Best no-install beginner option: Xbox Game Bar

Xbox Game Bar is the best starting point for a Windows beginner who wants to record without installing a separate recorder. Microsoft documents it as a way to record video clips from games and apps. Open it with the Windows Game Bar shortcut on a supported Windows build, use the capture controls to start or stop recording, and use the “record what happened” feature where that option is available. Microsoft’s Game Bar recording guide covers the supported workflow.

Saved clips are commonly placed in the Windows user’s VideosCaptures folder, but verify the location on the specific Windows and Game Bar version. Background recording, duration, desktop capture, and app compatibility can vary by Windows build, Game Bar version, permissions, and application type. Game Bar is convenient, but it does not provide OBS-level scenes, alerts, advanced audio routing, or multi-track editing workflows.

Best Steam-native option: Steam Game Recording

Steam Game Recording is the best choice for Steam players who want background capture, timeline markers, and in-game review without adding a separate production suite.

Valve announced the beta on June 26, 2024. Its documented features included background recording, manual hotkey capture, timeline markers, game-defined markers in supported games, scrubbing footage while playing, and creating clips. Valve announced general availability to all users on November 5, 2024. Use Valve’s beta announcement and general-release announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limitation is scope. Steam Game Recording is tied to the Steam overlay and ecosystem. It is not a replacement for OBS when you need non-Steam applications, webcams, alerts, capture cards, or a complete Twitch or YouTube layout. Game-defined markers also depend on support from the individual game.

  • Ultra-low latency: Stay in the moment with ultra-low latency powered by USB 3.2 Gen 2, ensuring your broadcast and gameplay remain perfectly synchronized, delivering an immersive and responsive streaming experience.

Best paid simplicity option: Bandicam

Bandicam is the best paid option for Windows users who prefer a conventional recorder for long sessions, games, and desktop tutorials. It offers a straightforward file-based workflow and paid plans that the official store describes as providing unlimited video recording and editing. Bandicam compares its clip workflow with built-in options such as Game Bar and NVIDIA capture in its official clip-recording guide.

The free version has restrictions, including limitations that may involve watermarking or recording length. Because the current purchase page references newer license years, do not reuse its current price as a historical 2024 price. Bandicam is less attractive than OBS for livestream production, Linux or macOS users, and creators who need complex scenes or advanced multi-track audio, but it can be easier for someone who wants to install a paid recorder and start making conventional video files.

Best for automatic highlights: Medal and Outplayed

Medal and Outplayed belong in a separate clipping category. They are most relevant when “recording software” means find my best moments, edit them quickly, and share them rather than record an entire session for a polished video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medal’s current comparison page emphasizes instant clips, automatic clipping, a built-in editor, sharing links, and cross-GPU support, while positioning OBS around full-session recording and streaming. Those are vendor claims from Medal’s own current marketing material, not independent benchmark results. See Medal’s comparison page. Outplayed, distributed through Overwolf, is similarly oriented toward supported-game highlights and a clip-library workflow; exact features and plan terms should be checked before purchase or signup.

These tools can be more convenient than OBS for social clips, but they may add a platform layer, account or library workflow, and game-specific behavior. They should not be treated as universal replacements for OBS.

Choose by hardware and goal

  • NVIDIA GPU + instant clips: NVIDIA capture or ShadowPlay.
  • AMD GPU + instant clips: AMD Adrenalin Record and Instant Replay.
  • Steam games + timeline review: Steam Game Recording.
  • YouTube or Twitch production: OBS Studio.
  • Windows beginner: Xbox Game Bar.
  • Automatic highlights and social sharing: Medal or Outplayed.
  • Paid, simple, long recordings: Bandicam.
  • Mixed hardware or multiple capture sources: OBS Studio.

Recording settings that matter

Resolution and frame rate

Record at the resolution you intend to edit and publish. 1080p60 is a practical starting point for many creators; 1440p or 4K requires more encoder capacity, storage, and editing performance. High-refresh capture such as 120, 144, or 240 FPS depends on the GPU, encoder, display mode, software version, and output format. A selectable setting does not prove that the game and encoder maintained it consistently.

Encoder and quality

Hardware encoding is usually the first option to test when you want to reduce CPU work, but it still consumes GPU resources and can affect frame pacing. Compare OBS with NVENC on NVIDIA systems, OBS with AMD encoding on Radeon systems, and Quick Sync on supported Intel systems. There is no universal “zero performance loss” setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio tracks

For editing, separate game, microphone, and communications audio when the recorder supports it. A short test can reveal a wrong default device, an overly quiet microphone, Discord being captured unintentionally, or notification sounds entering desktop audio. Bluetooth headsets can switch microphone profiles and reduce audio quality when their microphone is active.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Storage and file format

Higher resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and less-compressed quality create larger files. Keep substantial free space in the save directory and consider recording to a separate fast SSD to reduce contention with the game drive. In OBS, an MKV workflow is commonly preferred for greater resilience if recording is interrupted, followed by remuxing to MP4 when an editor requires it; verify the exact menu labels in the OBS build being used. AMD likewise warns that gameplay files can become very large.

HDR, VRR, and ultrawide displays

Test HDR footage in the software where it will be edited and watched; HDR video can appear washed out in an SDR workflow. Ultrawide footage may need cropping for TikTok, Shorts, or other vertical formats. Variable-refresh-rate displays can make gameplay appear smoother than the encoded file. Treat HDR, VRR, and high-refresh support as configuration-specific rather than universal promises.

Troubleshooting common recording failures

Black screen or missing game capture

  1. Switch the game to borderless-windowed mode.
  2. Confirm OBS and the game use the intended GPU.
  3. Run both applications with compatible privilege levels.
  4. Try Display Capture as a fallback.
  5. Disable conflicting overlays one at a time.
  6. Try a different capture source or select the correct game window.
  7. Check whether anti-cheat or protected content limits capture.

Display Capture can solve detection problems, but it may also capture notifications, browser windows, and other desktop content. Capture behavior varies by game and anti-cheat implementation; do not assume any recorder or overlay is universally compatible or permitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microphone or game audio is missing

  • Check the selected input device after changing headsets.
  • Make sure the microphone was enabled before starting a replay buffer.
  • Watch the audio meters during a test recording.
  • Separate microphone and game audio tracks when possible.
  • Disable unwanted Discord, browser, or notification capture.
  • Check whether a Bluetooth headset changed to a lower-quality microphone profile.

Hotkey does nothing

Look for a conflict with the game, another overlay, or a keyboard utility. Confirm that the replay buffer or background recording was started before playing, and test a different key combination. Some applications require matching administrator privileges before overlays or hotkeys work correctly.

Recording stutters or the encoder is unavailable

Lower output resolution or frame rate, choose a supported hardware encoder, reduce the quality preset, close competing GPU-heavy applications, and check available disk space. Hardware-encoder availability depends on the GPU, driver, operating system, and software version.

Files are missing or too large

Check the configured save directory, free storage, filename filters, and whether the application completed a clean stop. Replay buffers can create unexpectedly large clips at high quality. Make a short test clip and confirm that the file opens in your intended editor before recording a full session.

Do you need a capture card?

Not for ordinary PC gameplay captured on the same computer. OBS, NVIDIA capture, AMD Adrenalin, Game Bar, and Steam Game Recording can capture many PC workflows directly. A capture card becomes relevant for console footage, a camera or other HDMI source, or a dual-PC streaming setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

Install OBS Studio if you want one recorder that can grow with your channel. It is the strongest choice for full gameplay videos, livestreams, webcams, overlays, multiple audio sources, and replay-buffer clips. If your only goal is saving surprise moments, use the recorder already matched to your hardware: NVIDIA capture for GeForce or AMD Adrenalin for Radeon. Steam Game Recording is compelling for Steam-first players, while Game Bar is the simplest Windows starting point. Choose Bandicam when you specifically value a paid, conventional Windows workflow, and choose Medal or Outplayed when automatic highlights and social sharing matter more than production control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free game recorder in 2024?

OBS Studio is the best overall free recorder because it combines full-session capture, hardware encoders, Replay Buffer, multiple audio devices, separate tracks, webcam scenes, and streaming tools. Xbox Game Bar is easier if you only need basic Windows recording.

Is OBS better than ShadowPlay?

OBS is better for streaming, webcams, overlays, multiple audio tracks, and mixed capture sources. ShadowPlay or NVIDIA App capture is better for GeForce users who want instant replay with minimal setup.

Which recorder has the least performance impact?

There is no universal winner. Performance depends on the game, encoder, preset, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GPU, CPU, and capture method. Test hardware encoding and monitor frame-time consistency rather than trusting absolute “zero impact” claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can OBS save the last 30 seconds?

Yes. Enable Replay Buffer under Settings → Output, set the buffer duration, start it before playing, and assign a Save Replay Buffer hotkey under Settings → Hotkeys.

Does Xbox Game Bar record desktop applications?

It can record supported games and apps, but desktop capture behavior and available limits vary by Windows and Game Bar version. Verify the specific Windows build rather than assuming it records every desktop state.

Can Steam Game Recording work outside Steam?

It is designed around Steam’s overlay and game ecosystem, so it is not a complete universal recorder for non-Steam applications or creator production workflows.

Which software records microphone and game audio separately?

OBS provides the most flexible multi-source and multi-track workflow when configured in Advanced output mode. Other recorders may offer microphone controls, but their routing and track separation vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is best for 4K or HDR recording?

OBS, NVIDIA capture, and AMD capture can support high-resolution or HDR workflows under supported hardware and software configurations. Check the GPU, encoder, driver, color workflow, and editor; a selectable 4K or HDR option is not a guarantee of perfect output.

What should I use for Twitch and YouTube?

Use OBS Studio. Its scenes, webcam support, alerts, multiple sources, audio controls, hardware encoders, and streaming tools make it the most complete choice.

How much storage does gameplay recording require?

There is no single fixed amount. Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, quality preset, and recording duration all affect file size. Check the save drive before recording and make a short test file.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: OBS Studio is the best overall game recording software in 2024. NVIDIA and AMD users can get faster instant clips from their bundled capture tools, Steam players have a useful native timeline recorder, and beginners can start with Game Bar. Pick according to the workflow—not a one-size-fits-all ranking.
