If you want the exploration and action promised by Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, start with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for a gothic castle full of secrets, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for equipment and ability variety, or Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for fast combat and movement that opens routes. They overlap with the new game in different ways; none is a definitive substitute for its combination of a 2D action-exploration map and a whip used for both fighting and traversal.

Konami describes Belmont’s Curse as a 2D action-exploration game set in Paris in 1499. Rose Belmont uses the Vampire Killer whip to fight, swing across areas, reach previously inaccessible places, and uncover hidden rooms. Her other options include seven weapon categories, Relics, spells, and boss-derived Arcana. The recommendations below are grouped by the kind of overlap they offer, not ranked as a sourced or definitive comparison.

What kind of game should you look for?

“Games like Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” can mean several different things. The closest match depends on whether you care most about searching an interconnected map, fighting through 2D platforming stages, using movement powers to reach new places, changing your combat loadout, or exploring a dark fantasy world. The games below are useful starting points for those preferences; the available official information establishes Belmont’s Curse’s features, but not a definitive head-to-head ranking of alternatives.

  • For castle exploration and secrets: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • For combat and ability customization: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night or Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.
  • For movement-led exploration and quick combat: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
  • For a darker, more demanding action-platforming mood: Blasphemous 2.
  • For a quiet, atmospheric journey with platforming at its center: Hollow Knight or the Ori games.

These are suggestions by shared qualities, not claims that each game reproduces Rose’s whip, her equipment system, or the new game’s particular structure.

Castlevania Anniversary Collection - Limited Run #405 - PlayStation 4
  • Classics that defined the Castlevania series.
  • Includes the "History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon" ebook.
  • This includes eight classic Castlevania games preserved on one disc with a full-color manual.
  • The Castlevania Anniversary Collection on physical disc for the PlayStation 4. Also works on PlayStation 5. Region-free.

Start with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for a gothic castle to explore

If your main reason for anticipating Belmont’s Curse is the promise of searching a sprawling castle, Symphony of the Night is the most direct starting point. It is a 2D action-adventure built around exploring Dracula’s castle, fighting its inhabitants, and finding routes and secrets as you go. Its gothic setting and emphasis on discovery make it a natural fit for someone drawn to Rose’s journey through a detailed, hostile place.

The overlap is strongest in atmosphere and exploration, rather than in movement. Belmont’s Curse makes its whip a way to cross gaps and get to hidden areas as well as a weapon. Symphony of the Night is better approached as a castle-exploration game with combat and character progression than as a game about mastering a dedicated swinging tool. Pick it if you want to linger over rooms, uncover routes, and build familiarity with a gothic map.

  • Best for: players who want castle exploration, secrets, and a classic gothic tone.
  • Less similar if: the whip’s combined combat-and-traversal role is the feature you most want to experience.

Choose Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow for action and ability variation

Aria of Sorrow is another strong choice if the appeal of Belmont’s Curse lies in exploring a dangerous place while changing how you fight. Its action takes place in a 2D environment, and its soul-collection system lets the player gain and equip abilities from defeated enemies. That creates a different kind of customization from the new game’s seven weapon categories, Relics, spells, and Arcana, but the broad attraction is similar: exploration and combat are shaped by more than a single attack.

Choose it for a compact way to experience that mix of map exploration and evolving combat options. It does not star Rose Belmont, take place in 1499 Paris, or use the Vampire Killer whip as its central traversal device. Treat it as a useful point of comparison for the action-and-ability side of the new game, not as a direct continuation of its story or mechanics.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse | Night One Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Night One Edition includes: Main Game, Alucard Style Costume, Digital Sound & Art Gallery, Trevor Style Costume, Sypha Style Costume, and Family's Grace (Relic).
  • Medieval Paris, Where the Tolling Bells Herald the End - 1499: Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, Trevor Belmont’s successor ventures into the burning streets and the looming castle to hunt down the beasts. Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?
  • Satisfying Whip Action - The iconic whip of the series is now more important than ever! Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist! Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combats!
  • A Large Selection of Weapons and Abilities - The whip is not the only tool at your disposal. You will need to strategically plan your next move in combat and make full use of all the weapons and abilities to stand a chance!
  • Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!
  • Best for: players who enjoy collecting and equipping new combat abilities while exploring.
  • Less similar if: you want a whip-focused protagonist or traversal built around swinging.

Try Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for a modern gothic action-exploration game

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a good fit if you want a gothic setting, 2D action, and several ways to tailor combat. Its castle exploration and character progression put it in the same broad neighborhood as the exploration-led side of Belmont’s Curse. It is also a useful choice for players who want to experiment with different weapons and abilities rather than settle on one approach.

The important distinction is that a shared genre and mood do not make the games mechanically identical. Belmont’s Curse singles out the Vampire Killer as both Rose’s weapon and a traversal tool for reaching new spaces. That is the clearest specific feature to look for if you are comparing the two: Bloodstained is a match for gothic exploration and loadout variety, not a promise of the same whip-based movement.

  • Best for: players who want gothic exploration alongside a broad range of combat options.
  • Less similar if: you are choosing primarily for a movement tool that doubles as a weapon.

Pick Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for movement-led exploration

If the most unusual part of Belmont’s Curse sounds like using movement to open up the map, consider Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It is a 2D action-platforming adventure whose movement and abilities are central to getting through its world. It offers a good alternative for players who want to fight, navigate hazards, and return to places with a better set of tools.

The resemblance is about the role movement plays in exploration, not about setting or weapon. Belmont’s Curse is a gothic adventure in 1499 Paris, and the Vampire Killer is its defining traversal tool. The Lost Crown has its own identity, setting, and movement abilities. Choose it if your priority is fluid action and navigating a world that rewards learning how to move through it, rather than specifically seeking castles, vampires, or a whip.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Edition Nintendo Switch
  • 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
  • 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
  • 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it
  • Unlock the four original Dead Cells DLCs, giving you late-game content plus an entire new pathway to follow, with an alternative ending and tons of new enemies, weapons & outfits
  • Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord
  • Best for: players who want action-platforming in which movement abilities help with exploration.
  • Less similar if: the gothic Castlevania atmosphere or weapon-based build variety matters more than traversal.

Choose Blasphemous 2 for dark fantasy and deliberate combat

Blasphemous 2 suits players who want a dark, religiously inflected fantasy world and challenging 2D action. It offers exploration through a dangerous setting, with combat that tends to reward attention to enemy patterns and careful positioning. That makes it a stronger mood-and-combat match than a direct match for Belmont’s Curse’s stated traversal design.

Its tone is harsher and more unsettling than a simple gothic-adventure label suggests. Try it if you want your exploration to feel dangerous and your fights to demand patience. If you are more interested in the whip’s use for swinging to secrets and new areas, another recommendation on this list is a closer fit to that particular idea.

  • Best for: players who want a dark atmosphere and more deliberate, demanding action.
  • Less similar if: you prefer a lighter emphasis on combat difficulty or want whip-based traversal.

Consider Hollow Knight for a world built around discovery

Hollow Knight is a strong choice if the word “exploration” matters more to you than the Castlevania setting. It is a 2D action-adventure set in a large, interconnected underground world. Progress means learning the layout, finding passages and landmarks, and deciding which unfamiliar areas to tackle. Its atmosphere is somber and its fights can be demanding, though its world is not a gothic Parisian castle and its protagonist does not use a Belmont whip.

There is a meaningful difference in emphasis: Belmont’s Curse foregrounds weapon categories, Relics, spells, and Arcana as tools for varied combat. Hollow Knight is more compelling as a world to map and understand, with action and abilities in service of that journey. Pick it if the satisfaction of finding a new route is your priority; look elsewhere if you want a large arsenal to be the center of combat.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Edition (PS5)
  • 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
  • 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
  • 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it

  • Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord
  • Best for: players who enjoy interconnected exploration, secrets, and a melancholic atmosphere.
  • Less similar if: you want a broad weapon-selection focus or a vampire-hunting story.

Play the Ori games for expressive platforming and atmosphere

Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps are worth considering if the traversal and discovery side of Belmont’s Curse appeals more than its gothic combat. Both are 2D action-platforming adventures with an expressive visual style and movement at the heart of getting through their worlds. They offer a gentler tonal contrast to a vampire-hunting adventure, while still rewarding players who like learning how to move through a carefully designed environment.

They are not the closest choices for weapon-driven combat or gothic atmosphere. Think of them as recommendations for the feeling of navigating a place, gaining access to new routes, and mastering platforming challenges. If your priority is varied weapon categories, spells, or dark fantasy, start with Aria of Sorrow, Bloodstained, or Blasphemous 2 instead.

  • Best for: players drawn to movement, platforming, and evocative environments.
  • Less similar if: you want a dark gothic world or combat variety built around weapons and spells.

How to choose based on the feature you want most

If you want… Try… Why it fits
A castle, secrets, and gothic atmosphere Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Its strongest overlap is exploring a gothic castle and uncovering what it contains.
Exploration with collectible combat abilities Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow Its ability collection and 2D action connect exploration to changes in how you fight.
Gothic action and a wide range of combat options Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night It combines a gothic setting and exploration with equipment and ability variety.
Movement tools that help navigate a world Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Its action-platforming and traversal abilities put movement near the center of exploration.
Dark fantasy and demanding fights Blasphemous 2 Its strongest overlap is its bleak atmosphere and deliberate 2D combat.
Interconnected exploration above all Hollow Knight Its world rewards learning the map and searching for routes and discoveries.
Expressive platforming and a different mood Ori and the Blind Forest or Ori and the Will of the Wisps Both emphasize movement and environmental navigation more than gothic combat.

Use the table as a preference guide, not a scorecard. A game may share the target’s exploration structure without sharing its combat tempo, and a dark action-platformer may feel tonally close while offering a different kind of map.

What is confirmed about Belmont’s Curse and when can you play?

Konami announced Belmont’s Curse on February 12, 2026. Its official description calls it a 2D action-exploration game developed with Evil Empire and Motion Twin, with Evil Empire identified as the development studio and Motion Twin as an advisory studio. The official PlayStation Blog specifies the setting as Paris in 1499. Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont, uses the Vampire Killer to fight and to swing across areas, reach places that were previously inaccessible, and uncover hidden rooms. Konami also mentions weapons, spells, secrets, puzzles, and traps.

The PlayStation store listing describes seven weapon categories and Relics, as well as Arcana: spells and special actions associated with bosses sealed into tarot cards. Those details suggest more than one route to shaping combat, but they do not establish how each weapon or ability compares with those in the recommendations above.

As of October 13, 2026, Konami says a demo is available and the full game is scheduled for October 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The PlayStation listing identifies a PS5 edition, offline play, one player, and a free demo. Nintendo lists the Switch edition for October 15 and says it is compatible with Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Switch. These are the announced details at that date; regional storefronts may display different availability information.

Konami says demo-save transfer requires the same platform and account, retaining the save, and updating to the full game. If you plan to continue a demo run, those conditions matter: a save from a different platform or account does not meet the stated transfer requirements.

Konami has also announced physical editions, including a physical Midnight Edition, for preorder. The Midnight Edition’s listed contents include alternate Rose costumes, a digital sound and art gallery, and an in-game Relic. No price or retailer stock status is established here, so check the relevant regional store for current edition details.

Is Belmont’s Curse a roguelike?

No. Konami’s head of communications for the Americas, Tommy Williams, told PC Gamer that the game is an action-exploration title where players can freely explore large, elaborately crafted maps, and said it is “not a roguelike or roguelite game.” That distinction matters when choosing alternatives: a run-based game can share 2D action and a dark setting, but it does not necessarily offer the kind of persistent map exploration implied by Belmont’s Curse’s description. The recommendations here focus on that exploration-led shape rather than simply on fast combat.
