Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse links fighting and exploration through Rose Belmont’s Vampire Killer: she can use the whip to attack, swing across spaces, and reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible. Official descriptions also confirm other weapons, Relics, and boss-derived Arcana abilities. A July 2026 hands-on preview reports further details about controls, secret walls, and skill-gated routes, but those specifics should be understood as preview reporting—not as a complete account of the finished game.
How the whip connects combat and movement
The Vampire Killer is not presented as a weapon Rose uses only when an enemy is in range. Konami describes it as a traversal tool as well as a way to fight: Rose can swing across areas, uncover hidden rooms, and reach previously inaccessible places. The official description also says whip mastery lets players attack from unconventional positions. That makes movement part of the combat system’s central idea: where Rose is in relation to an enemy or platform can matter as much as which attack she chooses. Konami’s February 12, 2026 announcement sets out that dual role.

In practical terms, a whip that changes Rose’s position can do more than close a gap. It can let her approach an enemy from above or another unexpected angle, then transition into an attack. Konami’s official wording promises the possibility of creative positioning, not a specific list of required tactics or a guarantee that every encounter has a single intended solution. The useful way to read the design is as a connected loop: use the whip to move, use the new position to create an opening, and keep the same tool available for reaching the next part of the environment.

A July 17, 2026 hands-on report by PlayStation Blog contributor Corey Brotherson describes the grapple as something that can lead either into a traversal swing or an immediate attack. It also reports dodge and slide moves, including a backward flip triggered by a quick double tap. Those are preview-level control details; the report is not a full control manual, and the available official summaries do not establish every input, timing window, or move in the final game.

The preview’s account points to a combat rhythm in which a grapple can serve different purposes depending on the moment. If Rose swings, she is using it to cross space; if the action chains into an attack, it becomes an offensive transition. Dodging and sliding, as reported in the preview, add ways to respond to danger without making every exchange a stationary attack trade. The exact value of each move will depend on enemy patterns and final tuning, neither of which can be fully assessed from the published summaries alone.
Konami’s Promotion Planner Moeko Nagaoka described the intended feel on PlayStation Blog as being able to “move around freely like a trapeze artist” and “pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combat.” That is a representative’s description of the design, rather than a measured statement about speed or a promise that every fight works the same way. It does, however, capture the official emphasis on fluid movement and fast offense. The February 12 announcement is also the source for that phrasing.
Weapons beyond the Vampire Killer
The whip is the defining tool, but it is not the only combat option. The official PlayStation product listing describes seven weapon categories and equipment customization. It does not provide a complete list of those categories in the material covered here, so the number should not be mistaken for a confirmed catalog of seven named weapons. The hands-on report supplies examples instead: a balanced longsword and shorter-range cestus gauntlets that support faster combos. Those illustrate different combat profiles, not an exhaustive inventory or a claim that every weapon must be used in a particular way.

For a player, the meaningful distinction is the trade-off suggested by those examples. The longsword is described as balanced, while the cestus favors close reach and quicker combinations. A weapon choice may therefore change how Rose wants to approach a target—whether to prioritize flexibility or to stay close and build a rapid sequence. The official listing’s customization reference indicates that equipment choices are part of the broader system, but the available source descriptions do not spell out the full set of slots, upgrade rules, or how weapon attributes interact with each enemy.
Seven categories is an official product-page figure, while the named longsword and cestus details come from the hands-on account. Keeping those evidence levels separate matters: it would be premature to infer all weapon names, damage values, move lists, or a best choice from two examples. The official PlayStation page also describes the game as a 2D action-exploration title, which is a more precise label than assuming a combat system or progression structure not specified in its listings. The US PlayStation listing is the source for the seven categories and customization.
Arcana, Relics, and the role of abilities
Official product information says defeated bosses are sealed into Rose’s tarot cards as Arcana. Their skills can then be used for spells and unique special actions. This creates a direct connection between boss encounters and Rose’s available abilities: bosses are not only obstacles to overcome, but also the source of a system that expands what she can do afterward. The official descriptions establish the boss-to-Arcana relationship, but do not enumerate the complete boss roster, card effects, or when each ability becomes available. Konami’s official game website and the PlayStation listing describe Arcana.

The hands-on report adds that mana can be recovered by defeating enemies and spent on spells or healing. Treat that resource loop as preview reporting rather than an independently confirmed final balancing detail. If it remains as described, it would make enemy encounters relevant to more than immediate survival: defeating foes could help replenish a resource used for both offense and recovery. The sources do not establish exact mana costs, recovery amounts, or whether every spell and healing option draws from the same pool.
Relics are another layer of equipment. Official descriptions say they can produce offensive or defensive effects, so their stated role is broader than simple stat boosts. The hands-on report says Rose can equip up to three Relics and names Crypt Key as one example. The three-item limit and example come from that preview; they should not be treated as a complete ruleset for Relics or evidence that every Relic behaves like Crypt Key. The official descriptions do not provide a full list of effects or explain whether a particular Relic opens a route, improves a fight, or does both.
How exploration is described
Konami’s announcement describes expansive locations containing hidden rooms, secrets, puzzles, and traps. The whip’s reach and swinging function fit into that setting by helping Rose cross areas and access places beyond an ordinary jump or walk. PlayStation Blog’s announcement also mentions secret chambers and hidden items, including health-restoring meat concealed behind breakable walls. Together, these details make exploration more than a route between fights: the environment can hide useful discoveries and ask the player to notice what can be reached, broken, or solved.

The hands-on report gives a more concrete, but still preview-level, picture of the map. It describes a large map with destructible secret walls and visible locations Rose could not reach until she gained a particular skill. This supports the idea of ability-gated backtracking: an unexplored or inaccessible spot may become reachable after Rose gains a new capability. It does not establish that every blocked route works this way, how many abilities gate paths, or the total size and layout of the finished map.
When moving through an area, the revealed systems suggest several different reasons to inspect a side path. A route might lead to a hidden room or item; a breakable wall might conceal a resource; a puzzle or trap might interrupt progress; or a visible ledge might be a place to revisit after acquiring a skill. Those are useful distinctions for thinking about exploration, but the source material does not say that each secret is mandatory or that every obstacle has a single solution. The map’s full structure and the balance between main-route progress and optional discoveries remain unstated.

The official sources call Belmont’s Curse a 2D action-exploration game. The hands-on report says it steers away from roguelite conventions such as permadeath and procedurally generated levels. On the evidence available, it is more useful to describe what is confirmed—a map with secrets, puzzles, hazards, and previewed skill-gated routes—than to force the game into a narrower genre label. The preview’s comments argue against assuming a roguelite loop built around those two named features; they do not amount to a complete description of every progression rule.

In particular, the reports do not establish a full map-reset system, the consequences of defeat, or every way the player’s progress is saved. Not seeing permadeath or procedural generation in the preview is not proof of every unreported system. The safe expectation from the public descriptions is exploration across authored locations, with revisiting and discovery as part of the reported progression, rather than a promise about all possible run or save mechanics.
What is confirmed, and what remains preview-level
Official information establishes the setting and broad systems. The story takes place in Paris in 1499, and Rose Belmont—Trevor Belmont’s daughter—is the protagonist. Konami and PlayStation describe a 2D action-exploration game, the whip’s traversal and combat roles, multiple weapons, Relics, and boss-derived Arcana. Official descriptions also identify secrets, hidden rooms, puzzles, and traps. These are the firm outline of what the game is built around.
Several finer details come from the July 2026 hands-on preview rather than the broad official summaries: destructible secret walls, routes that require a particular skill, specific dodge and grapple transitions, the weapon examples and their reported feel, mana use and recovery, a maximum of three equipped Relics, and particular encounters. Brotherson’s report is a hands-on preview, but those claims should remain attributed to it; they are not presented here as personal testing or as a definitive specification of the launch version.
The official game information lists an October 15, 2026 release date for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch; as of October 13, 2026, that date is still upcoming. Konami lists 60 frames per second generally and 30 frames per second on Nintendo Switch. These are the published specifications and date, not a post-launch verification of performance or availability. Storefront status and platform details can change, so consult the official PlayStation listing and Konami game page for the current listing.
Still not established in the cited official descriptions and preview are the full weapon and ability lists, complete map structure, entire boss roster, final balance, or whether every preview detail will be unchanged at launch. That leaves room for later specifics without making the central design unclear: the Vampire Killer serves both exploration and combat, while other weapons and abilities broaden Rose’s options.
